PartCraft: Crafting Creative Objects by Parts

Kam Woh Ng, Xiatian Zhu, Yi-Zhe Song, Tao Xiang

展开摘要

"This paper propels creative control in generative visual AI by allowing users to “select”. Departing from traditional text or sketch-based methods, we for the first time allow users to choose visual concepts by parts for their creative endeavors. The outcome is fine-grained generation that precisely captures selected visual concepts, ensuring a holistically faithful and plausible result. To achieve this, we first parse objects into parts through unsupervised feature clustering. Then, we encode parts into text tokens and introduce an entropy-based normalized attention loss that operates on them. This loss design enables our model to learn generic prior topology knowledge about object’s part composition, and further generalize to novel part compositions to ensure the generation looks holistically faithful. Lastly, we employ a bottleneck encoder to project the part tokens. This not only enhances fidelity but also accelerates learning, by leveraging shared knowledge and facilitating information exchange among instances. Visual results in the paper and supplementary material showcase the compelling power of in crafting highly customized, innovative creations, exemplified by the “charming” and creative birds in Fig. ??. 展开摘要

"Unsupervised 3D instance segmentation aims to segment objects from a 3D point cloud without any annotations. Existing methods face the challenge of either too loose or too tight clustering, leading to under-segmentation or over-segmentation. To address this issue, we propose Part2Object, hierarchical clustering with object guidance. Part2Object employs multi-layer clustering from points to object parts and objects, allowing objects to manifest at any layer. Additionally, it extracts and utilizes 3D objectness priors from temporally consecutive 2D RGB frames to guide the clustering process. Moreover, we propose Hi-Mask3D to support hierarchical 3D object part and instance segmentation. By training Hi-Mask3D on the objects and object parts extracted from Part2Object, we achieve consistent and superior performance compared to state-of-the-art models in various settings, including unsupervised instance segmentation, data-efficient fine-tuning, and cross-dataset generalization. Code is release at https://github. com/ChengShiest/Part2Object."

展开摘要

"Recent works have demonstrated that using reinforcement learning (RL) with multiple quality rewards can improve the quality of generated images in text-to-image (T2I) generation. However, manually adjusting reward weights poses challenges and may cause over-optimization in certain metrics. To solve this, we propose , which addresses the issue through multi-objective optimization and introduces an effective multi-reward optimization strategy to approximate Pareto optimal. Utilizing batch-wise Pareto optimal selection, automatically identifies the optimal trade-off among different rewards. We use the novel multi-reward optimization algorithm to jointly optimize the T2I model and a prompt expansion network, resulting in significant improvement of image quality and also allow to control the trade-off of different rewards using a reward related prompt during inference. Furthermore, we introduce original prompt-centered guidance at inference time, ensuring fidelity to user input after prompt expansion. Extensive experiments and a user study validate the superiority of over several baselines across various quality criteria, including aesthetics, human preference, text-image alignment, and image sentiment."

Parrot Captions Teach CLIP to Spot Text

展开摘要

"Despite CLIP [?] being the foundation model in numerous vision-language applications, CLIP suffers from a severe text spotting bias. Such bias causes CLIP models to ‘Parrot’ the visual text embedded within images while disregarding the authentic visual semantics. We uncover that in the most popular image-text dataset LAION-2B [?], the captions also densely parrot (spell) the text embedded in images. Our analysis shows that around 50% of images are embedded with visual text content and around 30% of captions words are concurrently embedded in the visual content. Based on such observation, we thoroughly inspect the different released versions of CLIP models and verify that the visual text is a dominant factor in measuring the LAION-style image-text similarity for these models. To examine whether these parrot captions shape the text spotting bias, we train a series of CLIP models with LAION subsets curated by different parrot-caption-oriented criteria. We show that training with parrot captions easily shapes such bias but harms the expected visual-language representation learning in CLIP models across various vision-language downstream tasks. This suggests that it is urgent to revisit either the design of CLIP-like models or the existing image-text dataset curation pipeline built on CLIP score filtering. Parameterized Quasi-Physical Simulators for Dexterous Manipulations Transfer

Xueyi Liu, Kangbo Lyu, jieqiong zhang, Tao Du, Li Yi

展开摘要

"We explore the dexterous manipulation transfer problem by designing simulators. The task wishes to transfer human manipulations to dexterous robot hand simulations and is inherently difficult due to its intricate, highly-constrained, and discontinuous dynamics and the need to control a dexterous hand with a DoF to accurately replicate human manipulations. Previous approaches that optimize in high-fidelity black-box simulators or a modified one with relaxed constraints only demonstrate limited capabilities or are restricted by insufficient simulation fidelity. We introduce parameterized quasi-physical simulators and a physics curriculum to overcome these limitations. The key ideas are 1) balancing between fidelity and optimizability of the simulation via a curriculum of parameterized simulators, and 2) solving the problem in each of the simulators from the curriculum, with properties ranging from high task optimizability to high fidelity. We successfully enable a dexterous hand to track complex and diverse manipulations in high-fidelity simulated environments, boosting the success rate by 11%+ from the best-performed baseline. 展开摘要

"The advancements in neural rendering have increased the need for techniques that enable intuitive editing of 3D objects represented as neural implicit surfaces. This paper introduces a novel neural algorithm for parameterizing neural implicit surfaces to simple parametric domains like spheres and polycubes. Our method allows users to specify the number of cubes in the parametric domain, learning a configuration that closely resembles the target 3D object’s geometry. It computes bi-directional deformation between the object and the domain using a forward mapping from the object’s zero level set and an inverse deformation for backward mapping. We ensure nearly bijective mapping with a cycle loss and optimize deformation smoothness. The parameterization quality, assessed by angle and area distortions, is guaranteed using a Laplacian regularizer and an optimized learned parametric domain. Our framework integrates with existing neural rendering pipelines, using multi-view images of a single object or multiple objects of similar geometries to reconstruct 3D geometry and compute texture maps automatically, eliminating the need for any prior information. We demonstrate the method’s effectiveness on images of human heads and man-made objects. The source code is available at https://xubaixinxbx.github.io/neuparam."

Parameter-Efficient and Memory-Efficient Tuning for Vision Transformer: A Disentangled Approach

展开摘要

"Recent works on parameter-efficient transfer learning (PETL) show the potential to adapt a pre-trained Vision Transformer to downstream recognition tasks with only a few learnable parameters. However, since they usually insert new structures into the pre-trained model, entire intermediate features of that model are changed and thus need to be stored to be involved in back-propagation, resulting in memory-heavy training. We solve this problem from a novel disentangled perspective, i.e., dividing PETL into two aspects: task-specific learning and pre-trained knowledge utilization. Specifically, we synthesize the task-specific query with a learnable and lightweight module, which is independent of the pre-trained model. The synthesized query equipped with task-specific knowledge serves to extract the useful features for downstream tasks from the intermediate representations of the pre-trained model in a query-only manner. Built upon these features, a customized classification head is proposed to make the prediction for the input sample. Given that our method employs an extremely lightweight architecture and avoids the use of heavy intermediate features for running gradient descent, it demonstrates limited memory usage in training. Extensive experiments manifest that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance under memory constraints, showcasing its applicability in real-world situations. 展开摘要

"We study a challenging task: text-to-motion synthesis, aiming to generate motions that align with textual descriptions and exhibit coordinated movements. Currently, the part-based methods introduce part partition into the motion synthesis process to achieve finer-grained generation. However, these methods encounter challenges such as the lack of coordination between different part motions and difficulties for networks to understand part concepts. Moreover, introducing finer-grained part concepts poses computational complexity challenges. In this paper, we propose Part-Coordinating Text-to-Motion Synthesis (ParCo), endowed with enhanced capabilities for understanding part motions and communication among different part motion generators, ensuring a coordinated and fined-grained motion synthesis. Specifically, we discretize whole-body motion into multiple part motions to establish the prior concept of different parts. Afterward, we employ multiple lightweight generators designed to synthesize different part motions and coordinate them through our part coordination module. Our approach demonstrates superior performance on common benchmarks with economic computations, including HumanML3D and KIT-ML, providing substantial evidence of its effectiveness. 展开摘要

"Tracking multiple objects in a continuous video stream is crucial for many computer vision tasks. It involves detecting and associating objects with their respective identities across successive frames. Despite significant progress made in multiple object tracking (MOT), recent studies have revealed the vulnerability of existing MOT methods to adversarial attacks. Nevertheless, all of these attacks belong to digital attacks that inject pixel-level noise into input images, and are therefore ineffective in physical scenarios. To fill this gap, we propose PapMOT, which can generate physical adversarial patches against MOT for both digital and physical scenarios. Besides attacking the detection mechanism, PapMOT also optimizes a printable patch that can be detected as new targets to mislead the identity association process. Moreover, we introduce a patch enhancement strategy to further degrade the temporal consistency of tracking results across video frames, resulting in more aggressive attacks. We further develop new evaluation metrics to assess the robustness of MOT against such attacks. Extensive evaluations on multiple datasets demonstrate that our PapMOT can successfully attack various architectures of MOT trackers in digital scenarios. We also validate the effectiveness of PapMOT for physical attacks by deploying printed adversarial patches in the real world."

展开摘要

"Panoramic videos contain richer spatial information and have attracted tremendous amounts of attention due to their exceptional experience in some fields such as autonomous driving and virtual reality. However, existing datasets for video segmentation only focus on conventional planar images. To address the challenge, in this paper, we present a panoramic video dataset, i.e., PanoVOS. The dataset provides 150 videos with high video resolutions and diverse motions. To quantify the domain gap between 2D planar videos and panoramic videos, we evaluate 15 off-the-shelf video object segmentation (VOS) models on PanoVOS. Through error analysis, we found that all of them fail to tackle pixel-level content discontinues of panoramic videos. Thus, we present a Panoramic Space Consistency Transformer (PSCFormer), which can effectively utilize the semantic boundary information of the previous frame for pixel-level matching with the current frame. Extensive experiments demonstrate that compared with the previous SOTA models, our PSCFormer network exhibits a great advantage in terms of segmentation results under the panoramic setting. Our dataset poses new challenges in panoramic VOS and we hope that our PanoVOS can advance the development of panoramic segmentation/tracking. The dataset, codes, and pre-train models will be published at https://github.com/shilinyan99/PanoVOS."

PanoFree: Tuning-Free Holistic Multi-view Image Generation with Cross-view Self-Guidance

展开摘要

"Immersive scene generation, notably panorama creation, benefits significantly from the adaptation of large pre-trained text-to-image (T2I) models for multi-view image generation. Due to the high cost of acquiring multi-view images, tuning-free generation is preferred. However, existing methods are either limited to simple correspondences or require extensive fine-tuning to capture complex ones. We present PanoFree, a novel method for tuning-free multi-view image generation that supports an extensive array of correspondences. PanoFree sequentially generates multi-view images using iterative warping and inpainting, addressing the key issues of inconsistency and artifacts from error accumulation without the need for fine-tuning. It improves error accumulation by enhancing cross-view awareness and refines the warping and inpainting processes via cross-view guidance, risky area estimation and erasing, and symmetric bidirectional guided generation for loop closure, alongside guidance-based semantic and density control for scene structure preservation. In experiments on Planar, 360°, and Full Spherical Panoramas, PanoFree demonstrates significant error reduction, improves global consistency, and boosts image quality without extra fine-tuning. Compared to existing methods, PanoFree is up to 5x more efficient in time and 3x more efficient in GPU memory usage, and maintains superior diversity of results (2x better in our user study). PanoFree offers a viable alternative to costly fine-tuning or the use of additional pre-trained models."

展开摘要

"Under-display camera (UDC) image restoration aims to restore images distorted by the OLED display panel covering the frontal camera on a smartphone. Previous deep learning-based UDC restoration methods focused on restoring the image within the RGB domain with the collection of real or synthetic RGB datasets. However, UDC images in these datasets exhibit domain differences from real commercial smartphone UDC images while inherently constraining the problem and solution within the RGB domain. To address this issue, we collect well-aligned sensor-level real UDC images using panels from two commercial smartphones equipped with UDC. We also propose a new UDC restoration method to exploit the disparities between degradations caused by different panels, considering that UDC degradations are specific to the type of OLED panel. For this purpose, we train an encoder with an unsupervised learning scheme using triplet loss that aims to extract the inherent degradations caused by different panels from degraded UDC images as implicit representations. The learned panel-specific degradation representations are then provided as priors to our restoration network based on an efficient Transformer network. Extensive experiments show that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance on our real raw image dataset and generalizes well to previous datasets. Our dataset and code is available at https://github.com/OBAKSA/ DREUDC."

展开摘要

"Current large-scale diffusion models represent a giant leap forward in conditional image synthesis, capable of interpreting diverse cues like text, human poses, and edges. However, their reliance on substantial computational resources and extensive data collection remains a bottleneck. On the other hand, the integration of existing diffusion models, each specialized for different controls and operating in unique latent spaces, poses a challenge due to incompatible image resolutions and latent space embedding structures, hindering their joint use. Addressing these constraints, we present “PanGu-Draw”, a novel latent diffusion model designed for resource-efficient text-to-image synthesis that adeptly accommodates multiple control signals. We first propose a resource-efficient Time-Decoupling Training Strategy, which splits the monolithic text-to-image model into structure and texture generators. Each generator is trained using a regimen that maximizes data utilization and computational efficiency, cutting data preparation by 48% and reducing training resources by 51%. Secondly, we introduce “Coop-Diffusion”, an algorithm that enables the cooperative use of various pre-trained diffusion models with different latent spaces and predefined resolutions within a unified denoising process. This allows for multi-control image synthesis at arbitrary resolutions without the necessity for additional data or retraining. Empirical validations of Pangu-Draw show its exceptional prowess in text-to-image and multi-control image generation, suggesting a promising direction for future model training efficiencies and generation versatility. The largest 5B T2I PanGu-Draw model is released on the Ascend platform. Project page: https://pangu-draw.github.io"

Pairwise Distance Distillation for Unsupervised Real-World Image Super-Resolution

Yuehan Zhang, Seungjun Lee, Angela Yao

展开摘要

"Standard single-image super-resolution creates paired training data from high-resolution images through fixed downsampling kernels. However, real-world super-resolution (RWSR) faces unknown degradations in the low-resolution inputs, all the while lacking paired training data. Existing methods approach this problem by learning blind general models through complex synthetic augmentations on training inputs; they sacrifice the performance on specific degradation for broader generalization to many possible ones. We address the unsupervised RWSR for a targeted real-world degradation. We study from a distillation perspective and introduce a novel pairwise distance distillation framework. Through our framework, a model specialized in synthetic degradation adapts to target real-world degradations by distilling intra- and inter-model distances across the specialized model and an auxiliary generalized model. Experiments on diverse datasets demonstrate that our method significantly enhances fidelity and perceptual quality, surpassing state-of-the-art approaches in RWSR. PairingNet: A Learning-based Pair-searching and -matching Network for Image Fragments

展开摘要

"In this paper, we propose a learning-based image fragment pair-searching and -matching approach to solve the challenging restoration problem. Existing works use rule-based methods to match similar contour shapes or textures, which are always difficult to tune hyperparameters for extensive data and computationally time-consuming. Therefore, we propose a neural network that can effectively utilize neighbor textures with contour shape information to fundamentally improve performance. First, we employ a graph-based network to extract the local contour and texture features of fragments. Then, for the pair-searching task, we adopt a linear transformer-based module to integrate these local features and use contrastive loss to encode the global features of each fragment. For the pair-matching task, we design a weighted fusion module to dynamically fuse extracted local contour and texture features, and formulate a similarity matrix for each pair of fragments to calculate the matching score and infer the adjacent segment of contours. To faithfully evaluate our proposed network, we collect a real dataset and generate a simulated image fragment dataset through an algorithm we designed that tears complete images into irregular fragments. The experimental results show that our proposed network achieves excellent pair-searching accuracy, reduces matching errors, and significantly reduces computational time. 展开摘要

"As deep neural networks evolve from convolutional neural networks (ConvNets) to advanced vision transformers (ViTs), there is an increased need to eliminate redundant data for faster processing without compromising accuracy. Previous methods are often architecture-specific or necessitate re-training, restricting their applicability with frequent model updates. To solve this, we first introduce a novel property of lightweight ConvNets: their ability to identify key discriminative patch regions in images, irrespective of model’s final accuracy or size. We demonstrate that fully-connected layers are the primary bottleneck for ConvNets performance, and their suppression with simple weight recalibration markedly enhances discriminative patch localization performance. Using this insight, we introduce PaPr, a method for substantially pruning redundant patches with minimal accuracy loss using lightweight ConvNets across a variety of deep learning architectures, including ViTs, ConvNets, and hybrid transformers, without any re-training. Moreover, the simple early-stage one-step patch pruning with PaPr enhances existing patch reduction methods. Through extensive testing on diverse architectures, PaPr achieves significantly higher accuracy over state-of-the-art patch reduction methods with similar FLOP count reduction. More specifically, PaPr reduces about 70% of redundant patches in videos with less than 0.8% drop in accuracy, and up to 3.7× FLOPs reduction, which is a 15% more reduction with 2.5% higher accuracy. Code is available at https://github.com/tanvir-utexas/PaPr."

PYRA: Parallel Yielding Re-Activation for Training-Inference Efficient Task Adaptation

展开摘要

"Recently, the scale of transformers has grown rapidly, which introduces considerable challenges in terms of training overhead and inference efficiency in the scope of task adaptation. Existing works, namely Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) and model compression, have separately investigated the challenges. However, PEFT cannot guarantee the inference efficiency of the original backbone, especially for large-scale models. Model compression requires significant training costs for structure searching and re-training. Consequently, a simple combination of them cannot guarantee accomplishing both training efficiency and inference efficiency with minimal costs. In this paper, we propose a novel Parallel Yielding Re-Activation (PYRA) method for such a challenge of training-inference efficient task adaptation. PYRA first utilizes parallel yielding adaptive weights to comprehensively perceive the data distribution in downstream tasks. A re-activation strategy for token modulation is then applied for tokens to be merged, leading to calibrated token features. Extensive experiments demonstrate that PYRA outperforms all competing methods under both low compression rate and high compression rate, demonstrating its effectiveness and superiority in maintaining both training efficiency and inference efficiency for large-scale foundation models. Our code is available at https://github.com/ THU-MIG/PYRA."

PRET: Planning with Directed Fidelity Trajectory for Vision and Language Navigation

Renjie Lu, Jingke Meng, Wei-Shi Zheng

展开摘要

"Vision and language navigation is a task that requires an agent to navigate according to a natural language instruction. Recent methods predict sub-goals on constructed topology map at each step to enable long-term action planning. However, they suffer from high computational cost when attempting to support such high-level predictions with GCN-like models. In this work, we propose an alternative method that facilitates navigation planning by considering the alignment between instructions and directed fidelity trajectories, which refers to a path from the initial node to the candidate locations on a directed graph without detours. This planning strategy leads to an efficient model while achieving strong performance. Specifically, we introduce a directed graph to illustrate the explored area of the environment, emphasizing directionality. Then, we firstly define the trajectory representation as a sequence of directed edge features, which are extracted from the panorama based on the corresponding orientation. Ultimately, we assess and compare the alignment between instruction and different trajectories during navigation to determine the next navigation target. Our method outperforms previous SOTA method BEVBert on RxR dataset and is comparable on R2R dataset while largely reducing the computational cost. PQ-SAM: Post-training Quantization for Segment Anything Model

展开摘要

"Segment anything model (SAM) is a promising prompt-guided vision foundation model to segment objects of interest. However, the extensive computational requirements of SAM have limited its applicability in resource-constraint edge devices. Post-training quantization (PTQ) is an effective potential for fast-deploying SAM. Nevertheless, SAM’s billion-scale pretraining creates a highly asymmetric activation distribution with detrimental outliers in excessive channels, resulting in significant performance degradation of the low-bit PTQ. In this paper, we propose PQ-SAM, the first PTQ method customized for SAM. To achieve a quantization-friendly tensor-wise distribution, PQ-SAM incorporates a novel grouped activation distribution transformation (GADT) based on a two-stage outlier hierarchical clustering (OHC) scheme to scale and shift each channel. Firstly, OHC identifies and truncates extreme outliers to reduce the scale variance of different channels. Secondly, OHC iteratively allocates learnable shifting and scaling sizes to each group of channels with similar distributions, reducing the number of learnable parameters and easing the optimization difficulty. These shifting and scaling sizes are used to adjust activation channels, and jointly optimized with quantization step sizes for optimal results. Extensive experiments demonstrate that PQ-SAM outperforms existing PTQ methods on nine zero-shot datasets, and pushes the 4-bit PTQ of SAM to a usable level."
