Long-Term Correlation Tracking

Chao Ma, Xiaokang Yang, Chongyang Zhang, Ming-Hsuan Yang

展开摘要

In this paper, we address the problem of long-term visual tracking where the target objects undergo significant appearance variation due to deformation, abrupt motion, heavy occlusion and out-of-the-view. In this setting, we decompose the task of tracking into translation and scale estimation of objects. We show that the correlation between temporal context considerably improves the accuracy and reliability for translation estimation, and it is effective to learn the discriminative correlation filters from the most confident frames to estimate the scale change. In addition, we train an online random fern classifier to re-detect objects in case of tracking failure. Extensive experimental results on large-scale benchmark datasets show that the proposed algorithm performs favorably against the state-of-the-art methods in terms of efficiency, accuracy, and robustness.

Local High-Order Regularization on Data Manifolds

Kwang In Kim, James Tompkin, Hanspeter Pfister, Christian Theobalt

展开摘要

The common graph Laplacian regularizer is well-established in semi-supervised learning and spectral dimensionality reduction. However, as a first-order regularizer, it can lead to degenerate functions in high-dimensional manifolds. The iterated graph Laplacian enables high-order regularization, but it has a high computational complexity and so cannot be applied to large problems. We introduce a new regularizer which is globally high order and so does not suffer from the degeneracy of the graph Laplacian regularizer, but is also sparse for efficient computation in semi-supervised learning applications. We reduce computational complexity by building a local first-order approximation of the manifold as a surrogate geometry, and construct our high-order regularizer based on local derivative evaluations therein. Experiments on human body shape and pose analysis demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Line-Sweep: Cross-Ratio For Wide-Baseline Matching and 3D Reconstruction

Srikumar Ramalingam, Michel Antunes, Dan Snow, Gim Hee Lee, Sudeep Pillai

展开摘要

We propose a simple and useful idea based on cross-ratio constraint for wide-baseline matching and 3D reconstruction. Most existing methods exploit feature points and planes from images. Lines have always been considered notorious for both matching and reconstruction due to the lack of good line descriptors. We propose a method to generate and match new points using virtual lines constructed using pairs of keypoints, which are obtained using standard feature point detectors. We use cross-ratio constraints to obtain an initial set of new point matches, which are subsequently used to obtain line correspondences. We develop a method that works for both calibrated and uncalibrated camera configurations. We show compelling line-matching and large-scale 3D reconstruction.

展开摘要

Fisheye image rectification and estimation of intrinsic parameters for real scenes have been addressed in the literature by using line information on the distorted images. In this paper, we propose an easily implemented fisheye image rectification algorithm with line constrains in the undistorted perspective image plane. A novel Multi-Label Energy Optimization (MLEO) method is adopted to merge short circular arcs sharing the same or the approximately same circular parameters and select long circular arcs for camera rectification. Further we propose an efficient method to estimate intrinsic parameters of the fisheye camera by automatically selecting three properly arranged long circular arcs from previously obtained circular arcs in the calibration procedure. Experimental results on a number of real images and simulated data show that the proposed method can achieve good results and outperforms the existing approaches and the commercial software in most cases.

Line Drawing Interpretation in a Multi-View Context

Jean-Dominique Favreau, Florent Lafarge, Adrien Bousseau

展开摘要

Many design tasks involve the creation of new objects in the context of an existing scene. Existing work in computer vision only provides partial support for such tasks. On the one hand, multi-view stereo algorithms allow the reconstruction of real-world scenes, while on the other hand algorithms for line-drawing interpretation do not take context into account. Our work combines the strength of these two domains to interpret line drawings of imaginary objects drawn over photographs of an existing scene. The main challenge we face is to identify the existing 3D structure that correlates with the line drawing while also allowing the creation of new structure that is not present in the real world. We propose a labeling algorithm to tackle this problem, where some of the labels capture dominant orientations of the real scene while a free label allows the discovery of new orientations in the imaginary scene. We illustrate our algorithm by interpreting line drawings for urban planing, home remodeling, furniture design and cultural heritage.

Light Field Layer Matting

展开摘要

In this paper, we use matting to separate foreground layers from light fields captured with a plenoptic camera. We represent the input 4D light field as a 4D background light field, plus a 2D spatially varying foreground color layer with alpha. Our method can be used to both pull a fore- ground matte and estimate an occluded background light field. Our method assumes that the foreground layer is thin and fronto-parallel, and is composed of a limited set of col- ors that are distinct from the background layer colors. Our method works well for thin, translucent, and blurred foreground occluders. Our representation can be used to render the light field from novel views, handling disocclusions while avoiding common artifacts.

Light Field From Micro-Baseline Image Pair

展开摘要

We present a novel phase-based approach for recon- structing 4D light field from a micro-baseline stereo (LfS) pair. Our approach takes advantage of the unique prop- erty of complex steerable pyramid filters in micro-baseline stereo. We first introduce a disparity assisted phase based synthesis (DAPS) strategy that can integrate disparity infor- mation into the phase term of a reference image to warp it to its close neighbor views. Based on the DAPS, an "analy- sis by synthesis" approach is proposed to warp from one of the input binocular images to the other, and iteratively op- timize the disparity map to minimize the phase differences between the warped one and the ground truth input. Fi- nally, the densely and regularly spaced, high quality light field images can be reconstructed using the proposed DAPS according to the refined disparity map. Our approach also solves the problems of disparity inconsistency and ringing artifact in available phase-based view synthesis methods. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach sub- stantially improves both the quality of disparity map and light field, compared with the state-of-the-art stereo match- ing and image based rendering approaches.

Leveraging Stereo Matching With Learning-Based Confidence Measures

Min-Gyu Park, Kuk-Jin Yoon

展开摘要

We propose a new approach to associate supervised learning-based confidence prediction with the stereo matching problem. First of all, we analyze the characteristics of various confidence measures in the regression forest framework to select effective confidence measures using training data. We then train regression forests again to predict the correctness (confidence) of a match by using selected confidence measures. In addition, we present a confidence-based matching cost modulation scheme based on the predicted correctness for improving the robustness and accuracy of various stereo matching algorithms. We apply the proposed scheme to the semi-global matching algorithm to make it robust under unexpected difficulties that can occur in outdoor environments. We verify the proposed confidence measure selection and cost modulation methods through extensive experimentation with various aspects using KITTI and challenging outdoor datasets.

Learning to Segment Under Various Forms of Weak Supervision

Jia Xu, Alexander G. Schwing, Raquel Urtasun

展开摘要

Despite the promising performance of conventional fully supervised algorithms, semantic segmentation has remained an important, yet challenging task. Due to the limited availability of complete annotations, it is of great interest to design solutions for semantic segmentation that take into account weakly labeled data, which is readily available at a much larger scale. Contrasting the common theme to develop a different algorithm for each type of weak annotation, in this work, we propose a unified approach that incorporates various forms of weak supervision -- image level tags, bounding boxes, and partial labels -- to produce a pixel-wise labeling. We conduct a rigorous evaluation on the challenging Siftflow dataset for various weakly labeled settings, and show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art by $12\%$ on per-class accuracy, while maintaining comparable per-pixel accuracy.

Learning to Segment Moving Objects in Videos

Katerina Fragkiadaki, Pablo Arbelaez, Panna Felsen, Jitendra Malik

展开摘要

We segment moving objects in videos by ranking spatio-temporal segment proposals according to ``moving objectness''; how likely they are to contain a moving object. In each video frame, we compute segment proposals using multiple figure-ground segmentations on per frame motion boundaries. We rank them with a Moving Objectness Detector trained on image and motion fields to detect moving objects and discard over/under segmentations or background parts of the scene. We extend the top ranked segments into spatio-temporal tubes using random walkers on motion affinities of dense point trajectories. Our final tube ranking consistently outperforms previous segmentation methods in the two largest video segmentation benchmarks currently available, for any number of proposals. Further, our per frame moving object proposals increase the detection rate up to 7\% over previous state-of-the-art static proposal methods.

Learning to Rank in Person Re-Identification With Metric Ensembles

展开摘要

We propose an effective structured learning based approach to the problem of person re-identification which outperforms the current state-of-the-art on most benchmark data sets evaluated. Our framework is built on the basis of multiple low-level hand-crafted and high-level visual features. We then formulate two optimization algorithms, which directly optimize evaluation measures commonly used in person re-identification, also known as the Cumulative Matching Characteristic (CMC) curve. Our new approach is practical to many real-world surveillance applications as the re-identification performance can be concentrated in the range of most practical importance. The combination of these factors leads to a person re-identification system which outperforms most existing algorithms. More importantly, we advance state-of-the-art results on person re-identification by improving the rank-1 recognition rates from 40% to 50% on the iLIDS benchmark, 16% to 18% on the PRID2011 benchmark, 43% to 46% on the VIPeR benchmark, 34% to 53% on the CUHK01 benchmark and 21% to 62% on the CUHK03 benchmark.

Learning to Propose Objects

展开摘要

We present an approach for highly accurate bottom-up object segmentation. Given an image, the approach rapidly generates a set of regions that delineate candidate objects in the image. The key idea is to train an ensemble of figure-ground segmentation models. The ensemble is trained jointly, enabling individual models to specialize and complement each other. We reduce ensemble training to a sequence of uncapacitated facility location problems and show that highly accurate segmentation ensembles can be trained by combinatorial optimization. The training procedure jointly optimizes the size of the ensemble, its composition, and the parameters of incorporated models, all for the same objective. The ensembles operate on elementary image features, enabling rapid image analysis. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the presented approach outperforms prior object proposal algorithms by a significant margin, while having the lowest running time. The trained ensembles generalize across datasets, indicating that the presented approach is capable of learning a generally applicable model of bottom-up segmentation.

Learning to Generate Chairs With Convolutional Neural Networks

展开摘要

We train a generative convolutional neural network which is able to generate images of objects given object type, viewpoint, and color. We train the network in a supervised manner on a dataset of rendered 3D chair models. Our experiments show that the network does not merely learn all images by heart, but rather finds a meaningful representation of a 3D chair model allowing it to assess the similarity of different chairs, interpolate between given viewpoints to generate the missing ones, or invent new chair styles by interpolating between chairs from the training set. We show that the network can be used to find correspondences between different chairs from the dataset, outperforming existing approaches on this task.

Learning to Detect Motion Boundaries

展开摘要

We propose a learning-based approach for motion boundary detection. Precise localization of motion boundaries is essential for the success of optical flow estimation, as motion boundaries correspond to discontinuities of the optical flow field. The proposed approach allows to predict motion boundaries, using a structured random forest trained on the ground-truth of the MPI-Sintel dataset. The random forest leverages several cues at the patch level, namely appearance (RGB color) and motion cues (optical flow estimated by state-of-the-art algorithms). Experimental results show that the proposed approach is both robust and computationally efficient. It significantly outperforms state-of-the-art motion-difference approaches on the MPI-Sintel and Middlebury datasets. We compare the results obtained with several state-of-the-art optical flow approaches and study the impact of the different cues used in the random forest.Furthermore, we introduce a new dataset, the YouTube Motion Boundaries dataset (YMB), that comprises 60 sequences taken from real-world videos with manually annotated motion boundaries. On this dataset, our approach, although trained on MPI-Sintel, also outperforms by a large margin state-of-the-art optical flow algorithms.

Learning to Compare Image Patches via Convolutional Neural Networks

展开摘要

In this paper we show how to learn directly from image data (i.e., without resorting to manually-designed features) a general similarity function for comparing image patches, which is a task of fundamental importance for many computer vision problems. To encode such a function, we opt for a CNN-based model that is trained to account for a wide variety of changes in image appearance. To that end, we explore and study multiple neural network architectures, which are specifically adapted to this task. We show that such an approach can significantly outperform the state-of-the-art on several problems and benchmark datasets.

Learning an Efficient Model of Hand Shape Variation From Depth Images

展开摘要

We describe how to learn a compact and efficient model of the surface deformation of human hands. The model is built from a set of noisy depth images of a diverse set of subjects performing different poses with their hands. We represent the observed surface using Loop subdivision of a control mesh that is deformed by our learned parametric shape and pose model. The model simultaneously accounts for variation in subject-specific shape and subject-agnostic pose. Specifically, hand shape is parameterized as a linear combination of a mean mesh in a neutral pose with a small number of offset vectors. This mesh is then articulated using standard linear blend skinning (LBS) to generate the control mesh of a subdivision surface. We define an energy that encourages each depth pixel to be explained by our model, and the use of a smooth subdivision surface allows us to optimize for all parameters jointly from a rough initialization. The efficacy of our method is demonstrated using both synthetic and real data, where it is shown that hand shape variation can be represented using only a small number of basis directions. We compare with other approaches including PCA and show a substantial improvement in the representation power of our model, while maintaining the efficiency of a linear shape basis.

Learning a Sequential Search for Landmarks

Saurabh Singh, Derek Hoiem, David Forsyth

展开摘要

We propose a general method to find landmarks in images of objects using both appearance and spatial context. This method is applied without changes to two problems: parsing human body layouts, and finding landmarks in images of birds. Our method learns a sequential search for localizing landmarks, iteratively detecting new landmarks given the appearance and contextual information from the already detected ones. The choice of landmark to be added is opportunistic and depends on the image; for example, in one image a head-shoulder group might be expanded to a head-shoulder-hip group but in a different image to a head-shoulder-elbow group. The choice of initial landmark is similarly image dependent. Groups are scored using a learned function, which is used to expand them greedily. Our scoring function is learned from data labelled with landmarks but without any labeling of a detection order. Our method represents a novel spatial model for the kinematics of groups of landmarks, and displays strong performance on two different model problems.

Learning a Non-Linear Knowledge Transfer Model for Cross-View Action Recognition

Hossein Rahmani, Ajmal Mian

展开摘要

This paper concerns action recognition from unseen and unknown views. We propose unsupervised learning of a non-linear model that transfers knowledge from multiple views to a canonical view. The proposed Non-linear Knowledge Transfer Model (NKTM) is a deep network, with weight decay and sparsity constraints, which finds a shared high-level virtual path from videos captured from different unknown viewpoints to the same canonical view. The strength of our technique is that we learn a single NKTM for all actions and all camera viewing directions. Thus, NKTM does not require action labels during learning and knowledge of the camera viewpoints during training or testing. NKTM is learned once only from dense trajectories of synthetic points fitted to mocap data and then applied to real video data. Trajectories are coded with a general codebook learned from the same mocap data. NKTM is scalable to new action classes and training data as it does not require re-learning. Experiments on the IXMAS and N-UCLA datasets show that NKTM outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods for cross-view action recognition.

Learning a Convolutional Neural Network for Non-Uniform Motion Blur Removal

Jian Sun, Wenfei Cao, Zongben Xu, Jean Ponce

展开摘要

In this paper, we address the problem of estimating and removing non-uniform motion blur from a single blurry image. We propose a deep learning approach to predicting the probabilistic distribution of motion blur at the patch level using a convolutional neural network (CNN). We further extend the candidate set of motion kernels predicted by the CNN using carefully designed image rotations. A Markov random field model is then used to infer a dense non-uniform motion blur field enforcing motion smoothness. Finally, motion blur is removed by a non-uniform deblurring model using patch-level image prior. Experimental evaluations show that our approach can effectively estimate and remove complex non-uniform motion blur that is not handled well by previous approaches.

Learning With Dataset Bias in Latent Subcategory Models

展开摘要

Latent subcategory models (LSMs) offer significant improvements over training flat classifiers such as linear SVMs. Training LSMs is a challenging task due to the potentially large number of local optima in the objective function and the increased model complexity which requires large training set sizes. Often larger datasets are available as a collection of heterogeneous datasets. However, previous work has highlighted the possible danger of simply training a model from the combined datasets, due to the presence of bias. In this paper, we present a model which jointly learns an LSM for each dataset as well as a compound LSM. The method provides a means to borrow statistical strength from the datasets while reducing their inherent bias. In experiments we demonstrate that the compound LSM, when tested on Pascal, LabelMe, Caltech101 and SUN in a leave-one-dataset-out fashion, achieves an average improvement of over 6.5% over a previous SVM-based undoing bias approach and an average improvement of over 8.6% over a standard LSM trained on the concatenation of the datasets. Hence our method provides the best of both worlds.
