Semi-Online Precoding with Information Parsing for Cooperative MIMO Wireless Networks

Juncheng Wang, Ben Liang, Min Dong, Gary Boudreau, Hatem Abou-zeid

展开摘要

We consider cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding design with multiple access points (APs) assisted by a central controller (CC) in a fading environment. Even though each AP may have its own local channel state information (CSI), due to the communication delay in the backhaul, neither the APs nor the CC has timely global CSI. Under this semi-online setting, our goal is to minimize the accumulated precoding deviation between the actual local precoders executed by the APs and an ideal cooperative precoder based on the global CSI, subject to per-AP transmit power limits. We propose an efficient algorithm, termed Semi-Online Precoding with Information Parsing (SOPIP), which accounts for the network heterogeneity in information timeliness and computational capacity. SOPIP does not require the CC to send the full global CSI to each AP. Instead, it takes advantage of the precoder structure to substantially lower the communication overhead, while allowing each AP to effectively combine its own timely local CSI with the delayed global CSI to enable adaptive precoder updates. We analyze the performance of SOPIP in the presence of both multi-slot communication delay and gradient estimation error, showing that it has a bounded performance gap from an offline optimal solution. Simulation results under typical Long-Term Evolution network settings further demonstrate the substantial performance gain of SOPIP over other centralized and distributed schemes.

Dyssect: Dynamic Scaling of Stateful Network Functions

展开摘要

Network Function Virtualization promises better utilization of computational resources by dynamically scaling resources on demand. However, most network functions (NFs) are stateful and require state updates on a per-packet basis. During a scaling operation, cores need to synchronize access to a shared state to avoid race conditions and to guarantee that NFs process packets in arrival order. Unfortunately, the classic approach to control concurrent access to a shared state with locks does not scale to today’s throughput and latency requirements. Moreover, network traffic is highly skewed, leading to load imbalances in systems that use only sharding to partition the NF states. To address these challenges, we present Dyssect, a system that enables dynamic scaling of stateful NFs by disaggregating the states of network functions. By carefully coordinating actions between cores and a central controller, Dyssect migrates shards and flows between cores for load balancing or traffic prioritization without resorting to locks or reordering packets. Our experimental evaluation shows that Dyssect reduces tail latency up to 32% and increases throughput up to 19.36% when compared to state-of-the-art competing solutions.

ANTIGONE: Accurate Navigation Path Caching in Dynamic Road Networks leveraging Route APIs

展开摘要

Navigation paths and corresponding travel times play a key role in location-based services (LBS) of which large-scale navigation path caching constitutes a fundamental component. In view of the highly dynamic real-time traffic changes in road networks, the main challenge amounts to updating paths in the cache in a fashion that incurs minimal costs due to querying external map service providers and cache maintenance. In this paper, we propose a hybrid graph approach in which an LBS provider maintains a dynamic graph with edge weights representing travel times, and queries the external map server so as to ascertain high fidelity of the cached paths subject to stringent limitations on query costs. We further deploy our method in one of the biggest on-demand food delivery platforms and evaluate the performance against state-of-the-art methods. Our experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of our approach in terms of both substantial savings in the number of required queries and superior fidelity of the cached paths.

When Deep Learning Meets Steganography: Protecting Inference Privacy in the Dark

展开摘要

While cloud-based deep learning benefits for high-accuracy inference, it leads to potential privacy risks when exposing sensitive data to untrusted servers. In this paper, we work on exploring the feasibility of steganography in preserving inference privacy. Specifically, we devise GHOST and GHOST+, two private inference solutions employing steganography to make sensitive images invisible in the inference phase. Motivated by the fact that deep neural networks (DNNs) are inherently vulnerable to adversarial attacks, our main idea is turning this vulnerability into the weapon for data privacy, enabling the DNN to misclassify a stego image into the class of the sensitive image hidden in it. The main difference is that GHOST retrains the DNN into a poisoned network to learn the hidden features of sensitive images, but GHOST+ leverages a generative adversarial network (GAN) to produce adversarial perturbations without altering the DNN. For enhanced privacy and a better computation-communication trade-off, both solutions adopt the edge-cloud collaborative framework. Compared with the previous solutions, this is the first work that successfully integrates steganography and the nature of DNNs to achieve private inference while ensuring high accuracy. Extensive experiments validate that steganography has excellent ability in accuracy-aware privacy protection of deep learning.
