SmartBond: A Deep Probabilistic Machinery for Smart Channel Bonding in IEEE 802.11ac

Raja Karmakar, Samiran Chattopadhyay, Sandip Chakraborty

展开摘要

Dynamic bandwidth operation in IEEE 802.11ac helps wireless access points to tune channel widths based on carrier sensing and bandwidth requirements of associated wireless stations. However, wide channels result in a reduction in the carrier sensing range, which leads to the problem of channel sensing asymmetry. As a consequence, access points face hidden channel interference that may lead to as high as 60% reduction in the throughput under certain scenarios of dense deployments of access points. Existing approaches handle this problem by detecting the hidden channels once they occur and affect the channel access performance. In a different direction, in this paper, we develop a method for avoiding hidden channels by meticulously predicting the channel width that can reduce interference as well as can improve the average communication capacity. The core of our approach is a deep probabilistic machinery based on point process modeling over the evolution of channel width selection process. The proposed approach, SmartBond, has been implemented and deployed over a testbed with 8 commercial wireless access points. The experiments show that the proposed model can significantly improve the channel access performance although it is lightweight and does not incur much overhead during the decision making process.

When FTM Discovered MUSIC: Accurate WiFi-based Ranging in the Presence of Multipath

Kevin Jiokeng, Gentian Jakllari, Alain Tchana, André-Luc Beylot

展开摘要

The recent standardization by IEEE of Fine Timing Measurement (FTM), a time-of-flight based approach for ranging has the potential to be a turning point in bridging the gap between the rich literature on indoor localization and the so-far tepid market adoption. However, experiments with the first WiFi cards supporting FTM show that while it offers meter-level ranging in clear line-of-sight settings (LOS), its accuracy can collapse in non-line-of-sight (NLOS) scenarios. We present FUSIC, the first approach that extends FTM's LOS accuracy to NLOS settings, without requiring any changes to the standard. To accomplish this, FUSIC leverages the results from FTM and MUSIC - both erroneous in NLOS - into solving the double challenge of 1) detecting when FTM returns an inaccurate value and 2) correcting the errors as necessary. Experiments in 4 different physical locations reveal that a) FUSIC extends FTM's LOS ranging accuracy to NLOS settings - hence, achieving its stated goal; b) it significantly improves FTM's capability to offer room-level indoor positioning.

(How Much) Does a Private WAN Improve Cloud Performance?

Todd Arnold, Ege Gürmeriçliler, Georgia Essig, Arpit Gupta, Matt Calder, Vasileios Giotsas, Ethan Katz-Bassett

展开摘要

The construction of private WANs by cloud providers enables them to extend their networks to more locations and establish direct connectivity with end user ISPs. Tenants of the cloud providers benefit from this proximity to users, which is supposed to provide improved performance by bypassing the public Internet. However, the performance impact of cloud providers' private WANs is not widely understood. To isolate the impact of a private WAN, we measure from globally distributed vantage points to two large cloud providers, comparing performance when using their worldwide WAN and when instead using the public Internet. The benefits are not universal. While 48% of our vantage points saw improved performance when using the WAN, 43% had statistically indistinguishable median performance, and 9% had better performance over the public Internet. We find that the benefits of the private WAN tend to improve with client-to-server distance, but the benefits (or drawbacks) for a particular vantage point depend on specifics of its geographic and network connectivity.

展开摘要

Large-scale WiFi system is gaining an increasing momentum rapidly in most corporate places. Enabling edge functions on the system is imperative to support unprecedented edge applications. However, building edge functionalities at each AP may incur frequent service migrations, low resource utilization, and inflexible resource provisioning. It is thus prospective to federate suitable APs to create a resource-pooled edge system such that users in association with federated APs can share the pooled resource. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture, named SoSA, to Socialize Static APs via user association transition activities for edge resource pooling. A reference implementation of SoSA is developed under an operating large-scale WiFi system in a campus area of 3.0925 km2. The novelty and contribution of SoSA lie in its three-layer design. In transition data feeding layer, we collect and process 25,074,733 association records of 55,809 users from 7,404 APs in a real WiFi system. In sociality construction and characterization layer, we construct an AP contact graph based on user transition statistics, under which we empirically study the sociality of APs and explore their evolving patterns. In edge resource pooling layer, by harnessing the AP sociality, we are able to customize resource pooling strategy to improve service provisioning performance. With adopting SoSA, we systematically investigate the performance of AP federation strategy in reducing service migration when users frequently transit among APs. Extensive data-driven experiments corroborate the efficacy of SoSA.

Looking before Crossing: An Optimal Algorithm to Minimize UAV Energy by Speed Scheduling with a Practical Flight Energy Model

展开摘要

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being widely used in wireless communication, e.g., collecting data from ground nodes (GNs), where energy is critical. Existing works combine speed scheduling, i.e., the controlling of speed, with trajectory design for UAVs, making it complicated to solve while loses focus on the fundamental nature of speed scheduling. We focus on speed scheduling by considering straight line flights, with applications in monitoring power transmission lines, roads, water/oil/gas pipes and rivers/coasts. By real-world flight tests, we disclose a speed-related flight energy consumption model, distinct from typical distance-related or duration-related models. Based on such a practical energy model, we develop the looking before crossing (virtual rooms) algorithm, where virtual rooms on the time-distance diagram represent the spatio-temporal constraint of GNs in wireless transmission. This algorithm is proved to be optimal in solving the offline problem, where all information is known before scheduling. For the online problem, i.e., GN information is not unavailable unless flies close, we propose an offline-inspired online heuristic. Simulation shows its performance is near the offline optimal. Our study on the practical flight energy model and speed scheduling sheds light on a new research direction on UAV-aided wireless communication.

展开摘要

End-to-end route control spanning a set of networks can provide opportunities to both end users to optimize interdomain control and network service providers to increase business offering. BGP, the de facto interdomain routing protocol, provides no programmable control. Recent proposals for interdomain control, such as MIRO, ARROW and SDX, provide more mechanisms and interfaces, but they are only either point or incremental solutions. In this paper, we provide the first, systematic formulation of the software-defined internetworking (SDI) model, in which a network exposes a programmable interface to allow clients to define the interdomain routes of the network, just as a traditional SDN switch exposes Openflow or another programmable interface to allow clients to define its next hops, extending SDN from intra-domain control to generic interdomain control. Different from intradomain SDN, which allows complete client control, SDI should also maximize network autonomy, such as by allowing a network to maintain the control of its interdomain export policies, to avoid fundamental violations such as valley routing. We define the optimal end-to-end SDI routing problem and conduct rigorous analysis to show that the problem is NP-hard. We develop a blackbox optimization algorithm, which leverages Bayesian optimization theory and important properties of interdomain routing algebra, to sample end-to-end routes sequentially and find a near-optimal policy-compliant end-to-end route with a small number of sample routes. We implement a prototype of our optimization algorithm and validate its effectiveness via extensive experiments using real interdomain network topology. Results show that in an interdomain network with over 60000 ASes and over 320000 AS-level links, in 80% experiment cases, the blackbox optimization algorithm can find a near-optimal policy-compliant end-to-end route by sampling less than 33 routes.

SDN-based Order-aware Live Migration of Virtual Machines

Dinuni K. Fernando, Ping Yang, Hui Lu

展开摘要

Live migration is a key technique to transfer virtual machines (VMs) from one machine to another. Often multiple VMs need to be migrated in response to events such as server maintenance, load balancing, and impending failures. However, VM migration is a resource intensive operation that pressures the CPU, memory, and network resources of the source and destination hosts as well as intermediate network links. The live migration mechanism ends up contending for finite resources with the VMs that it needs to migrate, which prolongs the total migration time and worsens the performance of applications running inside the VMs. In this paper, we propose SOLive, a new approach to reduce resource contention between the migration process and the VMs being migrated. First, by considering the nature of VM workloads, SOLive manages the order in which multiple VMs are migrated to significantly reduce the total mi-gration time. Secondly, to reduce the network contention between the migration process and the VMs, SOLive uses a combination of software-defined networking-based resource reservation and scatter gather-based VM migration to quickly deprovision the source host. A prototype implementation of our approach in KVM/QEMU platform shows that SOLive quickly evicts VMs from the source host with low impact on VMs' performance.
