Distractor-Free Novel View Synthesis via Exploiting Memorization Effect in Optimization

Yukun Wang, Kunhong Li, Minglin Chen, Longguang Wang, Shunbo Zhou, Kaiwen Xue, Yulan Guo

展开摘要

"Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have greatly advanced novel view synthesis, which is capable of photo-realistic rendering. However, these methods require the foundational assumption of the static scene (, consistent lighting condition and persistent object positions), which is often violated in real-world scenarios. In this study, we introduce MemE, an unsupervised plug-and-play module, to achieve high-quality novel view synthesis in noisy input scenarios. MemE leverages the inherent property in parameter optimization, known as the memorization effect to achieve distractor filtering and can be easily combined with NeRF or 3DGS. Furthermore, MemE is applicable in environments both with and without distractors, significantly enhancing the adaptability of NeRF and 3DGS across diverse input scenarios. Extensive experiments show that our methods (, MemE-NeRF and MemE-3DGS) achieve state-of-the-art performance on both real and synthetic noisy scenes. We will release our code for further research at https://github.com/Yukun66/MemE."

Distilling Knowledge from Large-Scale Image Models for Object Detection

展开摘要

"Large-scale image models have made great progress in recent years, pushing the boundaries of many vision tasks, , object detection. Considering that deploying large models is impractical in many scenes due to expensive computation overhead, this paper presents a new knowledge distillation method, which Distills knowledge from Large-scale Image Models for object detection (dubbed DLIM-Det). To this end, we make the following two efforts: (1) To bridge the gap between the teacher and student, we present a frozen teacher approach. Specifically, to create the teacher model via fine-tuning large models on a specific task, we freeze the pretrained backbone and only optimize the task head. This preserves the generalization capability of large models and gives rise to distinctive characteristics in the teacher. In particular, when equipped with DEtection TRansformers (DETRs), the frozen teacher exhibits sparse query locations, thereby facilitating the distillation process. (2) Considering that large-scale detectors are mainly based on DETRs, we propose a Query Distillation (QD) method specifically tailored for DETRs. The QD performs knowledge distillation by leveraging the spatial positions and pair-wise relations of teacher’s queries as knowledge to guide the learning of object queries of the student model. Extensive experiments are conducted on various large-scale image models with parameter sizes ranging from 200M to 1B. Our DLIM-Det improves the student with Swin-Tiny by 3.1 mAP when the DINO detector with Swin-Large is used as the teacher. Besides, even when the teacher has 30 times more parameters than the student, DLIM-Det still attains a +2.9 distillation gain."

Distilling Diffusion Models into Conditional GANs

展开摘要

"We propose a method to distill a complex multistep diffusion model into a single-step conditional GAN student model, dramatically accelerating inference, while preserving image quality. Our approach interprets diffusion distillation as a paired image-to-image translation task, using noise-to-image pairs of the diffusion model’s ODE trajectory. For efficient regression loss computation, we propose E-LatentLPIPS, a perceptual loss operating directly in diffusion model’s latent space, utilizing an ensemble of augmentations. Furthermore, we adapt a diffusion model to construct a multi-scale discriminator with a text alignment loss to build an effective conditional GAN-based formulation. E-LatentLPIPS converges more efficiently than many existing distillation methods, even accounting for dataset construction costs. We demonstrate that our one-step generator outperforms cutting-edge one-step diffusion distillation models – SDXL-Turbo and SDXL-Lightning – on the COCO benchmark."

展开摘要

"Data-efficient learning has garnered significant attention, especially given the current trend of large multi-modal models. Recently, dataset distillation has become an effective approach by synthesizing data samples that are essential for network training. However, it remains to be explored which samples are essential for the dataset distillation process itself. In this work, we study the data efficiency and selection for the dataset distillation task. By re-formulating the dynamics of distillation, we provide insight into the inherent redundancy in the real dataset, both theoretically and empirically. We propose to use the empirical loss value as a static data pruning criterion. To further compensate for the variation of the data value in training, we find the most contributing samples based on their causal effects on the distillation. The proposed selection strategy can efficiently exploit the training dataset, outperform the previous SOTA distillation algorithms, and consistently enhance the distillation algorithms, even on much larger-scale and more heterogeneous datasets, , full ImageNet-1K and Kinetics-400. We believe this paradigm will open up new avenues in the dynamics of distillation and pave the way for efficient dataset distillation. 展开摘要

"Medical imaging often contains critical fine-grained features, such as tumors or hemorrhages, which are crucial for diagnosis yet potentially too subtle for detection with conventional methods. In this paper, we introduce DIA, dissolving is amplifying. DIA is a fine-grained anomaly detection framework for medical images. First, we introduce dissolving transformations. We employ diffusion with a generative diffusion model as a dedicated feature-aware denoiser. Applying diffusion to medical images in a certain manner can remove or diminish fine-grained discriminative features. Second, we introduce an amplifying framework based on contrastive learning to learn a semantically meaningful representation of medical images in a self-supervised manner, with a focus on fine-grained features. The amplifying framework contrasts additional pairs of images with and without dissolving transformations applied and thereby emphasizes the dissolved fine-grained features. DIA significantly improves the medical anomaly detection performance with around 18.40% AUC boost against the baseline method and achieves an overall SOTA against other benchmark methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/shijianjian/DIA.git."

展开摘要

"Large multimodal models (LMMs) excel in adhering to human instructions. However, self-contradictory instructions may arise due to the increasing trend of multimodal interaction and context length, which is challenging for language beginners and vulnerable populations. We introduce the Self-Contradictory Instructions benchmark to evaluate the capability of LMMs in recognizing conflicting commands. It comprises 20,000 conflicts, evenly distributed between language and vision paradigms. It is constructed by a novel automatic dataset creation framework, which expedites the process and enables us to encompass a wide range of instruction forms. Our comprehensive evaluation reveals current LMMs consistently struggle to identify multimodal instruction discordance due to a lack of self-awareness. Hence, we propose the Cognitive Awakening Prompting to inject cognition from external, largely enhancing dissonance detection. Here are our website, dataset, and code."

Disentangling Masked Autoencoders for Unsupervised Domain Generalization

展开摘要

"Domain Generalization (DG), designed to enhance out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization, is all about learning invariance against domain shifts utilizing sufficient supervision signals. Yet, the scarcity of such labeled data has led to the rise of unsupervised domain generalization (UDG) — a more important yet challenging task in that models are trained across diverse domains in an unsupervised manner and eventually tested on unseen domains. UDG is fast gaining attention but is still far from well-studied. To close the research gap, we propose a novel learning framework designed for UDG, termed the Disentangled Masked AutoEncoder (DisMAE), aiming to discover the disentangled representations that faithfully reveal the intrinsic features and superficial variations without access to the class label. At its core is the distillation of domain-invariant semantic features, which can not be distinguished by domain classifier, while filtering out the domain-specific variations (for example, color schemes and texture patterns) that are unstable and redundant. Notably, DisMAE co-trains the asymmetric dual-branch architecture with semantic and lightweight variation encoders, offering dynamic data manipulation and representation level augmentation capabilities. Extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets (DomainNet, PACS, VLCS, Colored MNIST) with both DG and UDG tasks demonstrate that DisMAE can achieve competitive OOD performance compared with the state-of-the-art DG and UDG baselines, which shed light on potential research line in improving the generalization ability with large-scale unlabeled data. Our codes are available at https: //github.com/rookiehb/DisMAE."

展开摘要

"The utilization of the triplane-based radiance fields has gained attention in recent years due to its ability to effectively disentangle 3D scenes with a high-quality representation and low computation cost. A key requirement of this method is the precise input of camera poses. However, due to the local update property of the triplane, a similar joint estimation as previous joint pose-NeRF optimization works easily results in local minima. To this end, we propose the Disentangled Triplane Generation module to introduce global feature context and smoothness into triplane learning, which mitigates errors caused by local updating. Then, we propose the Disentangled Plane Aggregation to mitigate the entanglement caused by the common triplane feature aggregation during camera pose updating. In addition, we introduce a two-stage warm-start training strategy to reduce the implicit constraints caused by the triplane generator. Quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance in novel view synthesis with noisy or unknown camera poses, as well as efficient convergence of optimization. Disentangled Clothed Avatar Generation from Text Descriptions

展开摘要

"In this paper, we introduce a novel text-to-avatar generation method that separately generates the human body and the clothes and allows high-quality animation on the generated avatar. While recent advancements in text-to-avatar generation have yielded diverse human avatars from text prompts, these methods typically combine all elements—clothes, hair, and body—into a single 3D representation. Such an entangled approach poses challenges for downstream tasks like editing or animation. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel disentangled 3D avatar representation named Sequentially Offset-SMPL (SO-SMPL), building upon the SMPL model. SO-SMPL represents the human body and clothes with two separate meshes but associates them with offsets to ensure the physical alignment between the body and the clothes. Then, we design a Score Distillation Sampling (SDS)-based distillation framework to generate the proposed SO-SMPL representation from text prompts. Our approach not only achieves higher texture and geometry quality and better semantic alignment with text prompts, but also significantly improves the visual quality of character animation, virtual try-on, and avatar editing. Discovering Unwritten Visual Classifiers with Large Language Models

展开摘要

"Multimodal pre-trained models, such as CLIP, are popular for zero-shot classification due to their open-vocabulary flexibility and high performance. However, vision-language models, which compute similarity scores between images and class labels, are largely black-box, with limited interpretability, risk for bias, and inability to discover new visual concepts not written down. Moreover, in practical settings, the vocabulary for class names and attributes of specialized concepts will not be known, preventing these methods from performing well on images uncommon in large-scale vision-language datasets. To address these limitations, we present a novel method that discovers interpretable yet discriminative sets of attributes for visual recognition. We introduce an evolutionary search algorithm that uses the in-context learning abilities of large language models to iteratively mutate a concept bottleneck of attributes for classification. Our method produces state-of-the-art, interpretable fine-grained classifiers. We outperform the baselines by 18.4% on five fine-grained iNaturalist datasets and by 22.2% on two KikiBouba datasets, despite the baselines having access to privileged information."

Discovering Novel Actions from Open World Egocentric Videos with Object-Grounded Visual Commonsense Reasoning

展开摘要

"Learning to infer labels in an open world, i.e., in an environment where the target “labels” are unknown, is an important characteristic for achieving autonomy. Foundation models, pre-trained on enormous amounts of data, have shown remarkable generalization skills through prompting, particularly in zero-shot inference. However, their performance is restricted to the correctness of the target label’s search space, i.e., candidate labels provided in the prompt. This target search space can be unknown or exceptionally large in an open world, severely restricting their performance. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose a two-step, neuro-symbolic framework called ALGO - Action Learning with Grounded Object recognition that uses symbolic knowledge stored in large-scale knowledge bases to infer activities in egocentric videos with limited supervision. First, we propose a neuro-symbolic prompting approach that uses object-centric vision-language models as a noisy oracle to ground objects in the video through evidence-based reasoning. Second, driven by prior commonsense knowledge, we discover plausible activities through an energy-based symbolic pattern theory framework and learn to ground knowledge-based action (verb) concepts in the video. Extensive experiments on four publicly available datasets (EPIC-Kitchens, GTEA Gaze, GTEA Gaze Plus, and Charades-Ego) demonstrate its performance on open-world activity inference. ALGO can be extended to zero-shot inference and demonstrate its competitive performance."

Discover-then-Name: Task-Agnostic Concept Bottlenecks via Automated Concept Discovery

展开摘要

"Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) have recently been proposed to address the ‘black-box’ problem of deep neural networks, by first mapping images to a human-understandable concept space and then linearly combining concepts for classification. Such models typically require first coming up with a set of concepts relevant to the task and then aligning the representations of a feature extractor to map to these concepts. However, even with powerful foundational feature extractors like CLIP, there are no guarantees that the specified concepts are detectable., calling into question the faithfulness of using them as explanations. In this work, we leverage recent advances in mechanistic interpretability and propose a novel CBM approach — called Discover-then-Name-CBM () — that inverts the typical paradigm: instead of pre-selecting concepts based on the downstream classification task, we use sparse autoencoders to first discover concepts learnt by the model, and then name them and train linear probes for classification. Our concept extraction strategy is efficient, since it is agnostic to the downstream task, and uses concepts already known to the model. We perform a comprehensive evaluation across multiple datasets and CLIP architectures and show that our method yields semantically meaningful concepts, assigns appropriate names to them that make them easy to interpret, and yields performant and interpretable CBMs. Code available at https://github.com/neuroexplicit-saar/discover-then-name."

DiscoMatch: Fast Discrete Optimisation for Geometrically Consistent 3D Shape Matching

Paul Roetzer, Ahmed Abbas, Dongliang Cao, Florian Bernard, Paul Swoboda

展开摘要

"In this work we propose to combine the advantages of learning-based and combinatorial formalisms for 3D shape matching. While learning-based methods lead to state-of-the-art matching performance, they do not ensure geometric consistency, so that obtained matchings are locally non-smooth. On the contrary, axiomatic, optimisation-based methods allow to take geometric consistency into account by explicitly constraining the space of valid matchings. However, existing axiomatic formalisms do not scale to practically relevant problem sizes, and require user input for the initialisation of non-convex optimisation problems. We work towards closing this gap by proposing a novel combinatorial solver that combines a unique set of favourable properties: our approach (i) is initialisation free, (ii) is massively parallelisable and powered by a quasi-Newton method, (iii) provides optimality gaps, and (iv) delivers improved matching quality with decreased runtime and globally optimal results for many instances. all_papers.txt decode_tex_noligatures.sh decode_tex_noligatures.sh~ decode_tex.sh decode_tex.sh~ ECCV_abstracts.csv ECCV_abstracts_good.csv ECCV.csv ECCV.csv~ ECCV_new.csv generate_list.sh generate_list.sh~ generate_overview.sh gen.sh gen.sh~ HOWTO HOWTO~ pdflist pdflist.copied RCS snippet.html These authors contributed equally to this work."

Direct Distillation between Different Domains

展开摘要

"Knowledge Distillation (KD) aims to learn a compact student network using knowledge from a large pre-trained teacher network, where both networks are trained on data from the same distribution. However, in practical applications, the student network may be required to perform in a new scenario (i.e., the target domain), which usually exhibits significant differences from the known scenario of the teacher network (i.e., the source domain). The traditional domain adaptation techniques can be integrated with KD in a two-stage process to bridge the domain gap, but the ultimate reliability of two-stage approaches tends to be limited due to the high computational consumption and the additional errors accumulated from both stages. To solve this problem, we propose a new one-stage method dubbed “Direct Distillation between Different Domains” (4Ds). We first design a learnable adapter based on the Fourier transform to separate the domain-invariant knowledge from the domain-specific knowledge. Then, we build a fusion-activation mechanism to transfer the valuable domain-invariant knowledge to the student network, while simultaneously encouraging the adapter within the teacher network to learn the domain-specific knowledge of the target data. As a result, the teacher network can effectively transfer categorical knowledge that aligns with the target domain of the student network. Intensive experiments on various benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed 4Ds method successfully produces reliable student networks and outperforms state-of-the-art approaches. 展开摘要

"Handwritten Text Generation (HTG) conditioned on text and style is a challenging task due to the variability of inter-user characteristics and the unlimited combinations of characters that form new words unseen during training. Diffusion Models have recently shown promising results in HTG but still remain under-explored. We present DiffusionPen (DiffPen), a 5-shot style handwritten text generation approach based on Latent Diffusion Models. By utilizing a hybrid style extractor that combines metric learning and classification, our approach manages to capture both textual and stylistic characteristics of seen and unseen words and styles, generating realistic handwritten samples. Moreover, we explore several variation strategies of the data with multi-style mixtures and noisy embeddings, enhancing the robustness and diversity of the generated data. Extensive experiments using IAM offline handwriting database show that our method outperforms existing methods qualitatively and quantitatively, and its additional generated data can improve the performance of Handwriting Text Recognition (HTR) systems. DiffusionDepth: Diffusion Denoising Approach for Monocular Depth Estimation

Yiqun Duan, Xianda Guo, Zheng Zhu

展开摘要

"Monocular depth estimation is a challenging task that predicts the pixel-wise depth from a single 2D image. Current methods typically model this problem as a regression or classification task. We propose DiffusionDepth, a new approach that reformulates monocular depth estimation as a denoising diffusion process. It learns an iterative denoising process to ‘denoise’ random depth distribution into a depth map with the guidance of monocular visual conditions. The process is performed in the latent space encoded by a dedicated depth encoder and decoder. Instead of diffusing ground truth (GT) depth, the model learns to reverse the process of diffusing the refined depth of itself into random depth distribution. This self-diffusion formulation overcomes the difficulty of applying generative models to sparse GT depth scenarios. The proposed approach benefits this task by refining depth estimation step by step, which is superior for generating accurate and highly detailed depth maps. Experimental results from both offline and online evaluations using the KITTI and NYU-Depth-V2 datasets indicate that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance in both indoor and outdoor settings while maintaining a reasonable inference time. Diffusion-Refined VQA Annotations for Semi-Supervised Gaze Following

Qiaomu Miao*, Alexandros Graikos, Jingwei Zhang, Sounak Mondal, Minh Hoai, Dimitris Samaras

展开摘要

"Training gaze following models requires a large number of images with gaze target coordinates annotated by human annotators, which is a laborious and inherently ambiguous process. We propose the first semi-supervised method for gaze following by introducing two novel priors to the task. We obtain the first prior using a large pretrained Visual Question Answering (VQA) model, where we compute Grad-CAM heatmaps by ‘prompting’ the VQA model with a gaze following question. These heatmaps can be noisy and not suited for use in training. The need to refine these noisy annotations leads us to incorporate a second prior. We utilize a diffusion model trained on limited human annotations and modify the reverse sampling process to refine the Grad-CAM heatmaps. By tuning the diffusion process we achieve a trade-off between the human annotation prior and the VQA heatmap prior, which retains the useful VQA prior information while exhibiting similar properties to the training data distribution. Our method outperforms simple pseudo-annotation generation baselines on the GazeFollow image dataset. More importantly, our pseudo-annotation strategy, applied to a widely used supervised gaze following model (VAT), reduces the annotation need by 50%. Our method also performs the best on the VideoAttentionTarget dataset. Code is available at https://github.com/cvlab-stonybrook/GCDR-Gaze. git"

Diffusion-Guided Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

展开摘要

"Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) with classification labels typically uses Class Activation Maps to localize the object based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). With limited receptive fields, CNN-based CAMs often fail to localize the whole object. The emergence of a Vision Transformer (ViT) alleviates the problem with superior performance, but the lack of locality in ViT introduces a new challenge. Inspired by the ability of Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPM) to capture high-level semantic information, we bring diffusion models to WSSS to resolve the problem. Firstly, to fuse and semantically align the information between DDPM and ViT, we design the Locality Fusion Cross Attention (LFCA) module. Using the aggregated features from the denoising process of the pretrained DDPM, LFCA generates CAMs (Diffusion-CAMs) that provide locality information to CAMs from ViT (ViT-CAMs). Secondly, by adding noise to the original image and denoising it with DDPM, we obtain a denoised image that can be leveraged as an augmented sample. To effectively guide ViT in excavating the relation between the patches, we devise the Patch Affinity Consistency (PAC) between the outputs of the original image and the denoised image. Extensive ablation studies support the superiority of the proposed method. Our method achieves new state-of-the-art performance on two widely used datasets in WSSS; PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS-COCO 2014. Diffusion-Generated Pseudo-Observations for High-Quality Sparse-View Reconstruction

展开摘要

"Novel view synthesis via Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) or 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) typically necessitates dense observations with hundreds of input images to circumvent artifacts. We introduce Deceptive-NeRF/3DGS1 to enhance sparse-view reconstruction with only a limited set of input images, by leveraging a diffusion model pre-trained from multiview datasets. Different from using diffusion priors to regularize representation optimization, our method directly uses diffusion-generated images to train NeRF/3DGS as if they were real input views. Specifically, we propose a deceptive diffusion model turning noisy images rendered from few-view reconstructions into high-quality photorealistic pseudo-observations. To resolve consistency among pseudo-observations and real input views, we develop an uncertainty measure to guide the diffusion model’s generation. Our system progressively incorporates diffusion-generated pseudo-observations into the training image sets, ultimately densifying the sparse input observations by 5 to 10 times. Extensive experiments across diverse and challenging datasets validate that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods and is capable of synthesizing novel views with super-resolution in the few-view setting. Project page: https://xinhangliu.com/deceptive-nerf-3dgs. 1 In harmonic progression, a Deceptive Cadence may disrupt expectations of chord progression but enriches the emotional expression of the music. Our Deceptive-X, where “X” can be NeRF, 3DGS, or a pertinent 3D reconstruction framework—counters overfitting to sparse input views by densely synthesizing consistent pseudo-observations, enriching the original sparse inputs by fivefold to tenfold."

Diffusion-Based Image-to-Image Translation by Noise Correction via Prompt Interpolation

展开摘要

"We propose a simple but effective training-free approach tailored to diffusion-based image-to-image translation. Our approach revises the original noise prediction network of a pretrained diffusion model by introducing a noise correction term. We formulate the noise correction term as the difference between two noise predictions; one is computed from the denoising network with a progressive interpolation of the source and target prompt embeddings, while the other is the noise prediction with the source prompt embedding. The final noise prediction network is given by a linear combination of the standard denoising term and the noise correction term, where the former is designed to reconstruct must-be-preserved regions while the latter aims to effectively edit regions of interest relevant to the target prompt. Our approach can be easily incorporated into existing image-to-image translation methods based on diffusion models. Extensive experiments verify that the proposed technique achieves outstanding performance with low latency and consistently improves existing frameworks when combined with them."
