Lost in Translation: Latent Concept Misalignment in Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Juntu Zhao, Junyu Deng, Yixin Ye, Chongxuan Li, Zhijie Deng, Dequan Wang

展开摘要

"Advancements in text-to-image diffusion models have broadened extensive downstream practical applications, but such models often encounter misalignment issues between text and image. Taking the generation of a combination of two disentangled concepts as an example, say given the prompt a tea cup of iced coke, existing models usually generate a glass cup of iced coke because the iced coke usually co-occurs with the glass cup instead of the tea one during model training. The root of such misalignment is attributed to the confusion in the latent semantic space of text-to-image diffusion models, and hence we refer to the a tea cup of iced coke phenomenon as Latent Concept Misalignment (LC-Mis). We leverage large language models (LLMs) to thoroughly investigate the scope of LC-Mis, and develop an automated pipeline for aligning the latent semantics of diffusion models to text prompts. Empirical assessments confirm the effectiveness of our approach, substantially reducing LC-Mis errors and enhancing the robustness and versatility of text-to-image diffusion models. Our code and dataset have been available online for reference."

展开摘要

"Multi-object tracking (MOT) endeavors to precisely estimate the positions and identities of multiple objects over time. The prevailing approach, tracking-by-detection (TbD), first detects objects and then links detections, resulting in a simple yet effective method. However, contemporary detectors may occasionally miss some objects in certain frames, causing trackers to cease tracking prematurely. To tackle this issue, we propose , meaning ‘to search’, a versatile framework compatible with any online TbD system, enhancing its ability to persistently track those objects missed by the detector, primarily due to occlusions. Remarkably, this is accomplished without modifying past tracking results or accessing future frames, i.e., in a fully online manner. generates proposals based on neighboring tracks, motion, and learned tokens. Utilizing a decision Transformer that integrates multimodal visual and spatiotemporal information, it addresses the object-proposal association as a multi-choice question-answering task. is trained independently of the underlying tracker, solely on synthetic data, without requiring fine-tuning. Through , we showcase consistent performance enhancements across five different trackers and establish a new state-of-the-art baseline across three different benchmarks. Lossy Image Compression with Foundation Diffusion Models

展开摘要

"Incorporating diffusion models in the image compression domain has the potential to produce realistic and detailed reconstructions, especially at extremely low bitrates. Previous methods focus on using diffusion models as expressive decoders robust to quantization errors in the conditioning signals. However, achieving competitive results in this manner requires costly training of the diffusion model and long inference times due to the iterative generative process. In this work we formulate the removal of quantization error as a denoising task, using diffusion to recover lost information in the transmitted image latent. Our approach allows us to perform less than 10% of the full diffusion generative process and requires no architectural changes to the diffusion model, enabling the use of foundation models as a strong prior without additional fine tuning of the backbone. Our proposed codec outperforms previous methods in quantitative realism metrics, and we verify that our reconstructions are qualitatively preferred by end users, even when other methods use twice the bitrate."

展开摘要

"Vision Transformers (ViT) have emerged as the de-facto choice for numerous industry grade vision solutions. But their inference cost can be prohibitive for many settings, as they compute self-attention in each layer which suffers from quadratic computational complexity in the number of tokens. On the other hand, spatial information in images and spatio-temporal information in videos is usually sparse. In this work, we introduce LookupViT, that aims to exploit this information sparsity to reduce the cost of ViT inference. LookupViT provides a novel general purpose vision transformer block that operates by compressing information from higher resolution tokens to a fixed number of tokens. These few compressed tokens undergo meticulous processing, while the higher-resolution tokens are passed through computationally cheaper layers. Information sharing between these two token sets is enabled through a bidirectional cross-attention mechanism. The approach offers multiple advantages - (a) easy to implement on standard ML accelerators (GPUs/TPUs) via standard high-level operators, (b) applicable to standard ViT and its variants, thus generalizes to various tasks, (c) can handle different tokenization and attention approaches. LookupViT also offers flexibility for the compressed tokens, enabling performance-computation trade-offs in a single trained model. LookupViT’s effectiveness on multiple domains - (a) for image-classification (ImageNet-1K and ImageNet-21K), (b) video classification (Kinetics400 and Something-Something V2), (c) image captioning (COCO-Captions) with a frozen encoder. LookupViT provides 2× reduction in FLOPs while upholding or improving accuracy across these domains. In addition, LookupViT also demonstrates out-of-the-box robustness on corrupted image classification (ImageNet-C), improving by more than 4% over ViT."

展开摘要

"For computer systems to effectively interact with humans using spoken language, they need to understand how the words being generated affect the users’ moment-by-moment attention. Our study focuses on the incremental prediction of attention as a person is seeing an image and hearing a referring expression defining the object in the scene that should be fixated by gaze. To predict the gaze scanpaths in this incremental object referral task, we developed the Attention in Referral Transformer model or ART, which predicts the human fixations spurred by each word in a referring expression. ART uses a multimodal transformer encoder to jointly learn gaze behavior and its underlying grounding tasks, and an autoregressive transformer decoder to predict, for each word, a variable number of fixations based on fixation history. To train ART, we created RefCOCO-Gaze, a large-scale dataset of 19,738 human gaze scanpaths, corresponding to 2,094 unique image-expression pairs, from 220 participants performing our referral task. In our quantitative and qualitative analyses, ART not only outperforms existing methods in scanpath prediction, but also appears to capture several human attention patterns, such as waiting, scanning, and verification. Code and dataset are available at: https://github.com/ cvlab-stonybrook/ART."

展开摘要

"When an object detector is deployed in a novel setting it often experiences a drop in performance. This paper studies how an embodied agent can automatically fine-tune a pre-existing object detector while exploring and acquiring images in a new environment without relying on human intervention, i.e., a fully self-supervised approach. In our setting, an agent initially learns to explore the environment using a pre-trained off-the-shelf detector to locate objects and associate pseudo-labels. By assuming that pseudo-labels for the same object must be consistent across different views, we learn the exploration policy “Look Around” to mine hard samples, and we devise a novel mechanism called “Disagreement Reconciliation” for producing refined pseudo-labels from the consensus among observations. We implement a unified benchmark of the current state-of-the-art and compare our approach with pre-existing exploration policies and perception mechanisms. Our method is shown to outperform existing approaches, improving the object detector by 6.2% in a simulated scenario, a 3.59% advancement over other state-of-the-art methods, and by 9.97% in the real robotic test without relying on ground-truth. Code for the proposed approach and baselines are available at https:// iit-pavis.github.io/Look_Around_And_Learn/."

Long-term Temporal Context Gathering for Neural Video Compression

展开摘要

"Most existing neural video codecs (NVCs) only extract short-term temporal context by optical flow-based motion compensation. However, such short-term temporal context suffers from error propagation and lacks awareness of long-term relevant information. This limits their performance, particularly in a long prediction chain. In this paper, we address the issue by facilitating the synergy of both long-term and short-term temporal contexts during feature propagation. Specifically, we introduce our DCVC-LCG framework, which use a Long-term temporal Context Gathering (LCG) module to search the diverse and relevant context from the long-term reference feature. The searched long-term context is leveraged to refine the feature propagation by integrating into the short-term reference feature, which can enhance the reconstruction quality and mitigate the propagation errors. During the search process, how to distinguish the helpful context and filter the irrelevant information is challenging and vital. To this end, we cluster the reference feature and perform the searching process in an intra-cluster fashion to improve the context mining. This synergistic integration of long-term and short-term temporal contexts can significantly enhance the temporal correlation modeling. Additionally, to improve the probability estimation in variable-bitrate coding, we introduce the quantization parameter as an extra prior to the entropy model. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, which offers an average 11.3% bitrate saving over the ECM on 1080p video datasets, using the single intra-frame setting."

Long-range Turbulence Mitigation: A Large-scale Dataset and A Coarse-to-fine Framework

展开摘要

"Long-range imaging inevitably suffers from atmospheric turbulence with severe geometric distortions due to random refraction of light. The further the distance, the more severe the disturbance. Despite existing research has achieved great progress in tackling short-range turbulence, there is less attention paid to long-range turbulence with significant distortions. To address this dilemma and advance the field, we construct a large-scale real long-range atmospheric turbulence dataset (RLR-AT), including 1500 turbulence sequences spanning distances from 1 Km to 13 Km. The advantages of RLR-AT compared to existing ones: turbulence with longer-distances and higher-diversity, scenes with greater-variety and larger-scale. Moreover, most existing work adopts either registration-based or decomposition-based methods to address distortions through one-step mitigation. However, they fail to effectively handle long-range turbulence due to its significant pixel displacements. In this work, we propose a coarse-to-fine framework to handle severe distortions, which cooperates dynamic turbulence and static background priors (CDSP). On the one hand, we discover the pixel motion statistical prior of turbulence, and propose a frequency-aware reference frame for better large-scale distortion registration, greatly reducing the burden of refinement. On the other hand, we take advantage of the static prior of background, and propose a subspace-based low-rank tensor refinement model to eliminate the misalignments inevitably left by registration while well preserving details. The dynamic and static priors complement to each other, facilitating us to progressively mitigate long-range turbulence with severe distortions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms SOTA methods on different datasets."

展开摘要

"Procedural activity videos often exhibit a long-tailed action distribution due to varying action frequencies and durations. However, state-of-the-art temporal action segmentation methods overlook the long tail and fail to recognize tail actions. Existing long-tail methods make class-independent assumptions and struggle to identify tail classes when applied to temporal segmentation frameworks. This work proposes a novel group-wise temporal logit adjustment (G-TLA) framework that combines a group-wise softmax formulation while leveraging activity information and action ordering for logit adjustment. The proposed framework significantly improves in segmenting tail actions without any performance loss on head actions. Source code is available1 . 1 https://github.com/pangzhan27/GTLA"

Long-CLIP: Unlocking the Long-Text Capability of CLIP

Beichen Zhang, Pan Zhang, Xiaoyi Dong, Yuhang Zang, Jiaqi Wang

展开摘要

"Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP) has been the cornerstone for zero-shot classification, text-image retrieval, and text-image generation by aligning image and text modalities. Despite its widespread adoption, a significant limitation of CLIP lies in the inadequate length of text input. The length of the text token is restricted to 77, and an empirical study shows the actual effective length is even less than 20. This prevents CLIP from handling detailed descriptions, limiting its applications for image retrieval and text-to-image generation with extensive prerequisites. To this end, we propose Long-CLIP as a plug-and-play alternative to CLIP that supports long-text input, retains or even surpasses its zero-shot generalizability, and aligns the CLIP latent space, making it readily replace CLIP without any further adaptation in downstream frameworks. Nevertheless, achieving this goal is far from straightforward, as simplistic fine-tuning can result in a significant degradation of CLIP’s performance. Moreover, substituting the text encoder with a language model supporting longer contexts necessitates pretraining with vast amounts of data, incurring significant expenses. Accordingly, Long-CLIP introduces an efficient fine-tuning solution on CLIP with two novel strategies designed to maintain the original capabilities, including (1) a knowledge-preserved stretching of positional embedding and (2) a primary component matching of CLIP features. With leveraging just one million extra long text-image pairs, Long-CLIP has shown the superiority to CLIP for about 20% in long caption text-image retrieval and 6% in traditional text-image retrieval tasks, , COCO and Flickr30k. Furthermore, Long-CLIP offers enhanced capabilities for generating images from detailed text descriptions by replacing CLIP in a plug-and-play manner. LogoSticker: Inserting Logos into Diffusion Models for Customized Generation

展开摘要

"Recent advances in text-to-image model customization have underscored the importance of integrating new concepts with a few examples. Yet, these progresses are largely confined to widely recognized subjects, which can be learned with relative ease through models’ adequate shared prior knowledge. In contrast, logos, characterized by unique patterns and textual elements, are hard to establish shared knowledge within diffusion models, thus presenting a unique challenge. To bridge this gap, we introduce the task of logo insertion. Our goal is to insert logo identities into diffusion models and enable their seamless synthesis in varied contexts. We present a novel two-phase pipeline LogoSticker to tackle this task. First, we propose the actor-critic relation pre-training algorithm, which addresses the nontrivial gaps in models’ understanding of the potential spatial positioning of logos and interactions with other objects. Second, we propose a decoupled identity learning algorithm, which enables precise localization and identity extraction of logos. LogoSticker can generate logos accurately and harmoniously in diverse contexts. We comprehensively validate the effectiveness of LogoSticker over customization methods and large models such as DALLE 3. Project page."

Localization and Expansion: A Decoupled Framework for Point Cloud Few-shot Semantic Segmentation

Zhaoyang Li, Yuan Wang, Wangkai Li, Rui Sun, Tianzhu Zhang

展开摘要

"Point cloud few-shot semantic segmentation (PC-FSS) aims to segment targets of novel categories in a given query point cloud with only a few annotated support samples. The current top-performing prototypical learning methods employ prototypes originating from support samples to direct the classification of query points. However, the inherent fragility of point-level matching and the prevalent intra-class diversity pose great challenges to this cross-instance matching paradigm, leading to erroneous background activations or incomplete target excavation. In this work, we propose a simple yet effective framework in the spirit of Decoupled Localization and Expansion (DLE). The proposed DLE, including a structural localization module (SLM) and a self-expansion module (SEM), enjoys several merits. First, structural information is injected into the matching process through the agent-level correlation in SLM, and the confident target region can thus be precisely located. Second, more reliable intra-object similarity is harnessed in SEM to derive the complete target, and the conservative expansion strategy is introduced to reasonably constrain the expansion. Extensive experiments on two challenging benchmarks under different settings demonstrate that DLE outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches by large margins."

Local and Global Flatness for Federated Domain Generalization

Hao Yan, Yuhong Guo

展开摘要

"Federated learning aims to train a unified model using isolated data distributed across multiple clients. However, traditional federated learning settings assume identical data distributions for both training and testing sets, neglecting the demand for the model’s cross-domain generalization ability when such assumption does not hold. Federated domain generalization seeks to develop a model that is capable of generalizing to unseen testing domains based on data isolated on multiple clients and sampled from multiple training domains. Challenges within this problem stem from both the lack of access to data from unseen testing domains and the absence of data from multiple training domains in each client. To address this, we propose a simple federated domain generalization method that seeks both local and global flatness. The proposed local flatness regularization prevents the model from converging to sharp minima, while the global flatness regularization encourages movement toward the global optimum. Both flatness regularizations rely on adversarial parameter perturbation, with two perturbation methods proposed at the level of weights and singular values. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed methods achieve state-of-the-art performance on standard federated domain generalization benchmarks. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/cnyanhao/FedLGF."

Local Occupancy-Enhanced Object Grasping with Multiple Triplanar Projection

Kangqi Ma*, Hao Dong, Yadong Mu

展开摘要

"This paper addresses the challenge of robotic grasping of general objects. Similar to prior research, the task reads a single-view 3D observation (i.e., point clouds) captured by a depth camera as input. Crucially, the success of object grasping highly demands a comprehensive understanding of the shape of objects within the scene. However, single-view observations often suffer from occlusions (including both self and inter-object occlusions), which lead to gaps in the point clouds, especially in complex cluttered scenes. This renders incomplete perception of the object shape and frequently causes failures or inaccurate pose estimation during object grasping. In this paper, we tackle this issue with an effective albeit simple solution, namely completing grasping-related scene regions through local occupancy prediction. Following prior practice, the proposed model first runs by proposing a number of most likely grasp points in the scene. Around each grasp point, a module is designed to infer any voxel in its neighborhood to be either void or occupied by some object. Importantly, the occupancy map is inferred by fusing both local and global cues. We implement a multi-group tri-plane scheme for efficiently aggregating long-distance contextual information. The model further estimates 6-DoF grasp poses utilizing the local occupancy-enhanced object shape information and returns the top-ranked grasp proposal. Comprehensive experiments on both the large-scale GraspNet-1Billion benchmark and real robotic arm demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively complete the unobserved parts in cluttered and occluded scenes. Benefiting from the occupancy-enhanced feature, our model clearly outstrips other competing methods under various performance metrics such as grasping average precision."

"We introduce , a highly accurate and efficient model designed for the task of tracking any point (TAP) across video sequences. Previous approaches in this task often rely on local 2D correlation maps to establish correspondences from a point in the query image to a local region in the target image, which often struggle with homogeneous regions or repetitive features, leading to matching ambiguities. overcomes this challenge with a novel approach that utilizes all-pair correspondences across regions, , local 4D correlation, to establish precise correspondences, with bidirectional correspondence and matching smoothness significantly enhancing robustness against ambiguities. We also incorporate a lightweight correlation encoder to enhance computational efficiency, and a compact Transformer architecture to integrate long-term temporal information. achieves unmatched accuracy on all TAP-Vid benchmarks and operates at a speed almost 6× faster than the current state-of-the-art."

展开摘要

"Text-to-motion generation requires not only grounding local actions in language but also seamlessly blending these individual actions to synthesize diverse and realistic global motions. However, existing motion generation methods primarily focus on the direct synthesis of global motions while neglecting the importance of generating and controlling local actions. In this paper, we propose the local action-guided motion diffusion model, which facilitates global motion generation by utilizing local actions as fine-grained control signals. Specifically, we provide an automated method for reference local action sampling and leverage graph attention networks to assess the guiding weight of each local action in the overall motion synthesis. During the diffusion process for synthesizing global motion, we calculate the local-action gradient to provide conditional guidance. This local-to-global paradigm reduces the complexity associated with direct global motion generation and promotes motion diversity via sampling diverse actions as conditions. Extensive experiments on two human motion datasets, , HumanML3D and KIT, demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Furthermore, our method provides flexibility in seamlessly combining various local actions and continuous guiding weight adjustment, accommodating diverse user preferences, which may hold potential significance for the community. The proposed approach constructs an implicit representation of 3D human heads, anchored on a parametric face model. To enhance representational capabilities and encode spatial information, we represent semantic consistent head region by a local tri-plane, modulated by a 3D Gaussian. Additionally, we parameterize these tri-planes in a 2D UV space via a 3DMM, enabling effective utilization of the diffusion model for 3D head avatar generation. LoA-Trans: Enhancing Visual Grounding by Location-Aware Transformers

Ziling Huang, Shin'ichi Satoh

展开摘要

"Given an image and text description, visual grounding will find target region in the image explained by the text. It has two task settings: referring expression comprehension (REC) to estimate bounding-box and referring expression segmentation (RES) to predict segmentation mask. Currently the most promising visual grounding approaches are to learn REC and RES jointly by giving rich ground truth of both bounding-box and segmentation mask of the target object. However, we argue that a very simple but strong constraint has been overlooked by the existing approaches: given an image and a text description, REC and RES refer to the same object. We propose Location Aware Transformer (LoA-Trans) making this constraint explicit by a center prompt, where the system first predicts the center of the target object by Location-Aware Network, and feeds it as a common prompt to both REC and RES. In this way, the system constrains that REC and RES refer to the same object. To mitigate possible inaccuracies in center estimation, we introduce a query selection mechanism. Instead of random initialization queries for bounding-box and segmentation mask decoding, the query selection mechanism generates possible object locations other than the estimated center and use them as location-aware queries as a remedy for possible inaccurate center estimation. We also introduce a TaskSyn Network in the decoder to better coordination between REC and RES. Our method achieved state-of-the-art performance on three commonly used datasets: Refcoco, Refcoco+, and Refcocog. Extensive ablation studies demonstrated the validity of each of the proposed components."

展开摘要

"Despite the recent progress in text-to-video generation, existing studies usually overlook the issue that only spatial contents but not temporal motions in synthesized videos are under the control of text. Towards such a challenge, this work presents a practical system, named , which allows users to animate an image of their interest with text descriptions. We first establish a strong baseline that helps a well-learned text-to-image generator (i.e., Stable Diffusion) take an image as a further input. We then equip the improved generator with a motion module for temporal modeling and propose a carefully designed training pipeline to better link texts and motions. In particular, considering the facts that (1) text can only describe motions roughly (e.g., regardless of the moving speed) and (2) text may include both content and motion descriptions, we introduce a motion intensity estimation module as well as a text re-weighting module to reduce the ambiguity of text-to-motion mapping. Empirical evidence suggests that our approach is capable of well decoding motion-related textual instructions into videos, such as actions, camera movements, or even conjuring new contents from thin air (e.g., pouring water into an empty glass). Interestingly, thanks to the proposed intensity learning mechanism, our system offers users an additional control signal (i.e., the motion intensity) besides text for video customization. LiteSAM is Actually what you Need for segment Everything

展开摘要

"The Segment Anything model (SAM) has brought significant changes to the segmentation field with its superior performance, but its extensive computational resource requirements remain a limiting factor. Many works, such as MobileSAM, Edge-SAM, and MobileSAM-v2, have explored lightweight solutions. However, their use of traditional Grid Search sampling strategies or two-stage concatenation methods, which do not allow for end-to-end training, severely limit the performance of segment everything (SegEvery). This paper introduces Lite-SAM, an efficient end-to-end solution for the SegEvery task designed to reduce computational costs and redundancy. Lite-SAM is composed of four main components: a streamlined CNN-Transformer hybrid encoder (LiteViT), an automated prompt proposal network (AutoPPN), a traditional prompt encoder, and a mask decoder. All these components are integrated within the SAM framework. Our LiteViT, a high-performance lightweight backbone network, has only 1.16M parameters, which is a 23% reduction compared to the lightest existing backbone network Shufflenet. We also introduce AutoPPN, an innovative end-to-end method for prompt boxes and points generation. This is an improvement over traditional grid search sampling methods, and its unique design allows for easy integration into any SAM series algorithm, extending its usability. we have thoroughly benchmarked Lite-SAM across a plethora of both public and private datasets. The evaluation encompassed a broad spectrum of universal metrics, including the number of parameters, SegEvery execution time, and accuracy. The findings reveal that Lite-SAM, operating with a lean 4.2M parameters, significantly outpaces its counterparts, demonstrating performance improvements of 43x, 31x, 20x, 21x, and 1.6x over SAM, MobileSAM, Edge-SAM, EfficientViT-SAM, and MobileSAM-v2 respectively, all the while maintaining competitive accuracy. This underscores Lite-SAM’s prowess in achieving an optimal equilibrium between performance and precision, thereby setting a new state-of-the-art(SOTA) benchmark in the domain."
