Occluded Gait Recognition with Mixture of Experts: An Action Detection Perspective

Panjian Huang, Yunjie Peng, Saihui Hou, Chunshui Cao, Xu Liu, Zhiqiang He, Yongzhen Huang

展开摘要

"Extensive occlusions in real-world scenarios pose challenges to gait recognition due to missing and noisy information, as well as body misalignment in position and scale. We argue that rich dynamic contextual information within a gait sequence inherently possesses occlusion-solving traits: 1) Adjacent frames with gait continuity allow holistic body regions to infer occluded body regions; 2) Gait cycles allow information integration between holistic actions and occluded actions. Therefore, we introduce an action detection perspective where a gait sequence is regarded as a composition of actions. To detect accurate actions under complex occlusion scenarios, we propose an Action Detection Based Mixture of Experts (GaitMoE), consisting of Mixture of Temporal Experts (MTE) and Mixture of Action Experts (MAE). MTE adaptively constructs action anchors by temporal experts and MAE adaptively constructs action proposals from action anchors by action experts. Especially, action detection as a proxy task with gait recognition is an end-to-end joint training only with ID labels. In addition, due to the lack of a unified occluded benchmark, we construct a pioneering Occluded Gait database (OccGait), containing rich occlusion scenarios and annotations of occlusion types. Extensive experiments on OccGait, OccCASIA-B, Gait3D and GREW demonstrate the superior performance of GaitMoE. OccGait is available at https://github.com/BNU-IVC/OccGait."

展开摘要

"Understanding how the 3D scene evolves is vital for making decisions in autonomous driving. Most existing methods achieve this by predicting the movements of object boxes, which cannot capture more fine-grained scene information. In this paper, we explore a new framework of learning a world model, OccWorld, in the 3D occupancy space to simultaneously predict the movement of the ego car and the evolution of the surrounding scenes. We propose to learn a world model based on 3D occupancy rather than 3D bounding boxes and segmentation maps for three reasons: 1) expressiveness. 3D occupancy can describe the more fine-grained 3D structure of the scene; 2) efficiency. 3D occupancy is more economical to obtain (e.g., from sparse LiDAR points). 3) versatility. 3D occupancy can adapt to both vision and LiDAR. To facilitate the modeling of the world evolution, we learn a reconstruction-based scene tokenizer on the 3D occupancy to obtain discrete scene tokens to describe the surrounding scenes. We then adopt a GPT-like spatial-temporal generative transformer to generate subsequent scene and ego tokens to decode the future occupancy and ego trajectory. Extensive experiments on nuScenes demonstrate the ability of OccWorld to effectively model the driving scene evolutions. OccWorld also produces competitive planning results without using instance and map supervision. Code: https://github.com/wzzheng/OccWorld."

展开摘要

"Existing 3D semantic occupancy prediction methods typically treat the task as a one-shot 3D voxel-wise segmentation problem, focusing on a single-step mapping between the inputs and occupancy maps, which limits their ability to refine and complete local regions gradually. In this paper, we introduce OccGen, a simple yet powerful generative perception model for 3D semantic occupancy prediction. OccGen adopts a “noise-to-occupancy” generative paradigm, progressively inferring and refining the occupancy map by predicting and eliminating noise originating from a random Gaussian distribution. OccGen consists of two main components: a conditional encoder that is capable of processing multi-modal inputs, and a progressive refinement decoder that applies diffusion denoising using the multi-modal features as conditions. A key insight of this generative pipeline is that the diffusion denoising process is naturally able to model the coarse-to-fine refinement of the dense 3D occupancy map, therefore producing more detailed predictions. Extensive experiments on several occupancy benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to the state-of-the-art methods. For instance, OccGen relatively enhances the mIoU by 9.5%, 6.3%, and 13.3% on nuScenes-Occupancy dataset under the muli-modal, LiDAR-only, and camera-only settings, respectively. Moreover, as a generative perception model, OccGen exhibits desirable properties that discriminative models cannot achieve, such as providing uncertainty estimates alongside its multiple-step predictions."

展开摘要

"[width=0.7]figures/frontp age.pdf Figure 1: Object removal and insertion. Our method models the effects of an object on the scene including occlusions, reflections, and shadows, enabling photorealistic object removal and insertion. It significantly outperforms state-of-the-art baselines. Diffusion models have revolutionized image editing but often generate images that violate physical laws, particularly the effects of objects on the scene, e.g., occlusions, shadows, and reflections. By analyzing the limitations of self-supervised approaches, we propose a practical solution centered on a counterfactual dataset. Our method involves capturing a scene before and after removing a single object, while minimizing other changes. By fine-tuning a diffusion model on this dataset, we are able to not only remove objects but also their effects on the scene. However, we find that applying this approach for photorealistic object insertion requires an impractically large dataset. To tackle this challenge, we propose bootstrap supervision; leveraging our object removal model trained on a small counterfactual dataset, we synthetically expand this dataset considerably. Our approach significantly outperforms prior methods in photorealistic object removal and insertion, particularly in modeling the effects of objects on the scene."

展开摘要

"Modality alignment has been of paramount importance in recent developments of multimodal learning, which has inspired many innovations in multimodal networks and pre-training tasks. Single-stream networks can effectively leverage self-attention mechanisms to facilitate modality interactions but suffer from high computational complexity and limited applicability to downstream retrieval tasks. In contrast, dual-stream networks address these issues but ignore the significance of modality alignment. In this paper, we develop a multimodal learning method that integrates the advantages of modality alignment from single-stream networks into the dual-stream network by introducing object-oriented anchors to bridge alignment between image and text modalities. Object-oriented anchors are generated effectively and circumvent the need for object detection boxes as previous region-based approaches, while also preserving explicit semantics for modality interactions. Additionally, we design fine-grained token-level asymmetry alignment between modalities and multiview mining to promote modality alignment. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to apply object-oriented tokens in multimodal pre-training, yielding significant benefits. Extensive experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method, demonstrating that the proposed method outperforms most previous arts in various downstream tasks, particularly when considering comparable data and model scales."

Object-Conditioned Energy-Based Attention Map Alignment in Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

展开摘要

"Text-to-image diffusion models have shown great success in generating high-quality text-guided images. Yet, these models may still fail to semantically align generated images with the provided text prompts, leading to problems like incorrect attribute binding and/or catastrophic object neglect. Given the pervasive object-oriented structure underlying text prompts, we introduce a novel object-conditioned Energy-Based Attention Map Alignment (EBAMA) method to address the aforementioned problems. We show that an object-centric attribute binding loss naturally emerges by approximately maximizing the log-likelihood of a z-parameterized energy-based model with the help of the negative sampling technique. We further propose an object-centric intensity regularizer to prevent excessive shifts of objects attention towards their attributes. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments, including human evaluation, on several challenging benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of our method over previous strong counterparts. With better aligned attention maps, our approach shows great promise in further enhancing the text-controlled image editing ability of diffusion models. The code is available at https://github.com/YasminZhang/ EBAMA."

展开摘要

"Diffusion-based video editing have reached impressive quality and can transform either the global style, local structure, and attributes of given video inputs, following textual edit prompts. However, such solutions typically incur heavy memory and computational costs to generate temporally-coherent frames, either in the form of diffusion inversion and/or cross-frame attention. In this paper, we conduct an analysis of such inefficiencies, and suggest simple yet effective modifications that allow significant speed-ups whilst maintaining quality. Moreover, we introduce Object-Centric Diffusion, to fix generation artifacts and further reduce latency by allocating more computations towards foreground edited regions, arguably more important for perceptual quality. We achieve this by two novel proposals: i) Object-Centric Sampling, decoupling the diffusion steps spent on salient or background regions and spending most on the former, and ii) Object-Centric Token Merging, which reduces cost of cross-frame attention by fusing redundant tokens in unimportant background regions. Both techniques are readily applicable to a given video editing model without retraining, and can drastically reduce its memory and computational cost. We evaluate our proposals on inversion-based and control-signal-based editing pipelines, and show a latency reduction up to 10× for a comparable synthesis quality. Object-Aware Query Perturbation for Cross-Modal Image-Text Retrieval

展开摘要

"The pre-trained vision and language (V&L) models have substantially improved the performance of cross-modal image-text retrieval. In general, however, V&L models have limited retrieval performance for small objects because of the rough alignment between words and the small objects in the image. In contrast, it is known that human cognition is object-centric, and we pay more attention to important objects, even if they are small. To bridge this gap between the human cognition and the V&L model’s capability, we propose a cross-modal image-text retrieval framework based on “object-aware query perturbation.” The proposed method generates a key feature subspace of the detected objects and perturbs the corresponding queries using this subspace to improve the object awareness in the image. In our proposed method, object-aware cross-modal image-text retrieval is possible while keeping the rich expressive power and retrieval performance of existing V&L models without additional fine-tuning. Comprehensive experiments on four public datasets show that our method outperforms conventional algorithms."

展开摘要

"While near-infrared (NIR) imaging is essential for assisted driving and safety monitoring systems, its monochromatic nature hinders its broader application, which prompts the development of NIR-to-visible translation tasks. However, the performance of existing translation methods is limited by the neglected disparities between NIR and visible imaging and the lack of paired training data. To address these challenges, we propose a novel object-aware framework for NIR-to-visible translation. Our approach decomposes the visible image recovery into object-independent luminance sources and object-specific reflective components, processing them separately to bridge the gap between NIR and visible imaging under various lighting conditions. Leveraging prior segmentation knowledge enhances our model’s ability to identify and understand the separated object reflection. We also collect the Fully Aligned NIR-Visible Image Dataset, a large-scale dataset comprising fully matched pairs of NIR and visible images captured with a multi-sensor coaxial camera. Empirical evaluations demonstrate our method’s superiority over existing methods, producing visually compelling results on mainstream datasets. 展开摘要

"In the current state of 3D object detection research, the severe scarcity of annotated 3D data, substantial disparities across different data modalities, and the absence of a unified architecture, have impeded the progress towards the goal of universality. In this paper, we propose OV-Uni3DETR, a unified open-vocabulary 3D detector via cycle-modality propagation. Compared with existing 3D detectors, OV-Uni3DETR offers distinct advantages: 1) Open-vocabulary 3D detection: During training, it leverages various accessible data, especially extensive 2D detection images, to boost training diversity. During inference, it can detect both seen and unseen classes. 2) Modality unifying: It seamlessly accommodates input data from any given modality, effectively addressing scenarios involving disparate modalities or missing sensor information, thereby supporting test-time modality switching. 3) Scene unifying: It provides a unified multi-modal model architecture for diverse scenes collected by distinct sensors. Specifically, we propose the cycle-modality propagation, aimed at propagating knowledge bridging 2D and 3D modalities, to support the aforementioned functionalities. 2D semantic knowledge from large-vocabulary learning guides novel class discovery in the 3D domain, and 3D geometric knowledge provides localization supervision for 2D detection images. OV-Uni3DETR achieves the state-of-the-art performance on various scenarios, surpassing existing methods by more than 6% on average. Its performance using only RGB images is on par with or even surpasses that of previous point cloud based methods. Code is available at https://github. com/zhenyuw16/Uni3DETR."

展开摘要

"The recent success of CLIP has demonstrated promising results in zero-shot semantic segmentation by transferring muiltimodal knowledge to pixel-level classification. However, leveraging pre-trained CLIP knowledge to closely align text embeddings with pixel embeddings still has limitations in existing approaches. To address this issue, we propose OTSeg, a novel multimodal attention mechanism aimed at enhancing the potential of multiple text prompts for matching associated pixel embeddings. We first propose Multi-Prompts Sinkhorn (MPS) based on the Optimal Transport (OT) algorithm, which leads multiple text prompts to selectively focus on various semantic features within image pixels. Moreover, inspired by the success of Sinkformers in unimodal settings, we introduce the extension of MPS, called Multi-Prompts Sinkhorn Attention (MPSA), which effectively replaces cross-attention mechanisms within Transformer framework in multimodal settings. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that OTSeg achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance with significant gains on Zero-Shot Semantic Segmentation (ZS3) tasks across three benchmark datasets. We release our source code at https://github.com/cubeyoung/OTSeg."

展开摘要

"Accurate depth information is crucial for enhancing the performance of multi-view 3D object detection. Despite the success of some existing multi-view 3D detectors utilizing pixel-wise depth supervision, they overlook two significant phenomena: 1) the depth supervision obtained from LiDAR points is usually distributed on the surface of the object, which is not so friendly to existing DETR-based 3D detectors due to the lack of the depth of 3D object center; 2) for distant objects, fine-grained depth estimation of the whole object is more challenging. Therefore, we argue that the object-wise depth (or 3D center of the object) is essential for accurate detection. In this paper, we propose a new multi-view 3D object detector named , whose main idea is to effectively inject object-wise depth information into the network through our proposed object-wise position embedding. Specifically, we first employ an object-wise depth encoder, which takes the pixel-wise depth map as a prior, to accurately estimate the object-wise depth. Then, we utilize the proposed object-wise position embedding to encode the object-wise depth information into the transformer decoder, thereby producing 3D object-aware features for final detection. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. Furthermore, achieves a new state-of-the-art performance with 64.4% NDS and 56.7% mAP on the nuScenes test benchmark. 展开摘要

"Category-level articulated object pose estimation focuses on the pose estimation of unknown articulated objects within known categories. Despite its significance, this task remains challenging due to the varying shapes and poses of objects, expensive dataset annotation costs, and complex real-world environments. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised approach that leverages a single-frame point cloud to solve this task. Our model consistently generates reconstruction with a canonical pose and joint state for the entire input object, and it estimates object-level poses that reduce overall pose variance and part-level poses that align each part of the input with its corresponding part of the reconstruction. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms previous self-supervised methods and is comparable to the state-of-the-art supervised methods. To assess the performance of our model in real-world scenarios, we also introduce a new real-world articulated object benchmark dataset1 . 1 Code and dataset are released at https://github.com/YC-Che/OP-Align."

"A novel algorithm for video lane detection is proposed in this paper. First, we extract a feature map for a current frame and detect a latent mask for obstacles occluding lanes. Then, we enhance the feature map by developing an occlusion-aware memory-based refinement (OMR) module. It takes the obstacle mask and feature map from the current frame, previous output, and memory information as input, and processes them recursively in a video. Moreover, we apply a novel data augmentation scheme for training the OMR module effectively. 展开摘要

"Personalization is an important topic in text-to-image generation, especially the challenging multi-concept personalization. Current multi-concept methods are struggling with identity preservation, occlusion, and the harmony between foreground and background. In this work, we propose OMG, an occlusion-friendly personalized generation framework designed to seamlessly integrate multiple concepts within a single image. We propose a novel two-stage sampling solution. The first stage takes charge of layout generation and visual comprehension information collection for handling occlusions. The second one utilizes the acquired visual comprehension information and the designed noise blending to integrate multiple concepts while considering occlusions. We also observe that the initiation denoising timestep for noise blending is the key to identity preservation and layout. Moreover, our method can be combined with various single-concept models, such as LoRA and InstantID without additional tuning. Especially, LoRA models on civitai.com can be exploited directly. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OMG exhibits superior performance in multi-concept personalization."

展开摘要

"Multi-object multi-part scene segmentation is a challenging task whose complexity scales exponentially with part granularity and number of scene objects. To address the task, we propose a plug-and-play approach termed OLAF. First, we augment the input (RGB) with channels containing object-based structural cues (fg/bg mask, boundary edge mask). We propose a weight adaptation technique which enables regular (RGB) pre-trained models to process the augmented (5-channel) input in a stable manner during optimization. In addition, we introduce an encoder module termed LDF to provide low-level dense feature guidance. This assists segmentation, particularly for smaller parts. OLAF enables significant mIoU gains of 3.3 (Pascal-Parts-58), 3.5 (Pascal-Parts-108) over the SOTA model. On the most challenging variant (Pascal-Parts-201), the gain is 4.0. Experimentally, we show that OLAF’s broad applicability enables gains across multiple architectures (CNN, U-Net, Transformer) and datasets. The code is available at olafseg.github.io"

OAT: Object-Level Attention Transformer for Gaze Scanpath Prediction

展开摘要

"Visual search is important in our daily life. The efficient allocation of visual attention is critical to effectively complete visual search tasks. Prior research has predominantly modelled the spatial allocation of visual attention in images at the pixel level, e.g. using a saliency map. However, emerging evidence shows that visual attention is guided by objects rather than pixel intensities. This paper introduces the Object-level Attention Transformer (OAT), which predicts human scanpaths as they search for a target object within a cluttered scene of distractors. OAT uses an encoder-decoder architecture. The encoder captures information about the position and appearance of the objects within an image and about the target. The decoder predicts the gaze scanpath as a sequence of object fixations, by integrating output features from both the encoder and decoder. We also propose a new positional encoding that better reflects spatial relationships between objects. We evaluated OAT on the Amazon book cover dataset and a new dataset for visual search that we collected. OAT’s predicted gaze scanpaths align more closely with human gaze patterns, compared to predictions by algorithms based on spatial attention on both established metrics and a novel behavioural-based metric. Our results demonstrate the generalization ability of OAT, as it accurately predicts human scanpaths for unseen layouts and target objects. The code is available at: https://github.com/HKUST-NISL/ oat_eccv24. 1 The first two authors contributed equally in the paper."

展开摘要

"Deep learning-based methods have shown remarkable performance in single JPEG artifacts removal task. However, existing methods tend to degrade on double JPEG images, which are prevalent in real-world scenarios. To address this issue, we propose Offset-Aware Partition Transformer for double JPEG artifacts removal, termed as OAPT. We conduct an analysis of double JPEG compression that results in up to four patterns within each 8×8 block and design our model to cluster the similar patterns to remedy the difficulty of restoration. Our OAPT consists of two components: compression offset predictor and image reconstructor. Specifically, the predictor estimates pixel offsets between the first and second compression, which are then utilized to divide different patterns. The reconstructor is mainly based on several Hybrid Partition Attention Blocks (HPAB), combining vanilla window-based self-attention and sparse attention for clustered pattern features. Extensive experiments demonstrate that OAPT outperforms the state-of-the-art method by more than 0.16dB in double JPEG image restoration task. Moreover, without increasing any computation cost, the pattern clustering module in HPAB can serve as a plugin to enhance other transformer-based image restoration methods. The code will be available at https://github.com/QMoQ/OAPT.git."

展开摘要

"Online construction of open-ended language scenes is crucial for robotic applications, where open-vocabulary interactive scene understanding is required. Recently, neural implicit representation has provided a promising direction for online interactive mapping. However, implementing open-vocabulary scene understanding capability into online neural implicit mapping still faces three challenges: lack of local scene updating ability, blurry spatial hierarchical semantic segmentation and difficulty in maintaining multi-view consistency. To this end, we proposed O2V-mapping, which utilizes voxel-based language and geometric features to create an open-vocabulary field, thus allowing for local updates during online training process. Additionally, we leverage a foundational model for image segmentation to extract language features on object-level entities, achieving clear segmentation boundaries and hierarchical semantic features. For the purpose of preserving consistency in 3D object properties across different viewpoints, we propose a spatial adaptive voxel adjustment mechanism and a multi-view weight selection method. Extensive experiments on open-vocabulary object localization and semantic segmentation demonstrate that O2V-mapping achieves online construction of language scenes while enhancing accuracy, outperforming the previous SOTA method."
