Towards More Practical Group Activity Detection: A New Benchmark and Model

Dongkeun Kim, Youngkil Song, Minsu Cho, Suha Kwak

展开摘要

"Group activity detection (GAD) is the task of identifying members of each group and classifying the activity of the group at the same time in a video. While GAD has been studied recently, there is still much room for improvement in both dataset and methodology due to their limited capability to address practical GAD scenarios. To resolve these issues, we first present a new dataset, dubbed Café. Unlike existing datasets, Café is constructed primarily for GAD and presents more practical scenarios and metrics, as well as being large-scale and providing rich annotations. Along with the dataset, we propose a new GAD model that deals with an unknown number of groups and latent group members efficiently and effectively. We evaluated our model on three datasets including Café, where it outperformed previous work in terms of both accuracy and inference speed."

Towards Latent Masked Image Modeling for Self-Supervised Visual Representation Learning

Yibing Wei, Abhinav Gupta, Pedro Morgado

展开摘要

"Masked Image Modeling (MIM) has emerged as a promising method for deriving visual representations from unlabeled image data by predicting missing pixels from masked portions of images. It excels in region-aware learning and provides strong initializations for various tasks, but struggles to capture high-level semantics without further supervised fine-tuning, likely due to the low-level nature of its pixel reconstruction objective. A promising yet unrealized framework is learning representations through masked reconstruction in latent space, combining the locality of MIM with the high-level targets. However, this approach poses significant training challenges as the reconstruction targets are learned in conjunction with the model, potentially leading to trivial or suboptimal solutions. Our study is among the first to thoroughly analyze and address the challenges of such framework, which we refer to as Latent MIM. Through a series of carefully designed experiments and extensive analysis, we identify the source of these challenges, including representation collapsing for joint online/target optimization, learning objectives, the high region correlation in latent space and decoding conditioning. By sequentially addressing these issues, we demonstrate that latent MIM can indeed learn high-level representations while retaining the benefits of MIM models. Code is available at https://github.com/yibingwei-1/ LatentMIM."

Towards Image Ambient Lighting Normalization

展开摘要

"Lighting normalization is a crucial but underexplored restoration task with broad applications. However, existing works often simplify this task within the context of shadow removal, limiting the light sources to one and oversimplifying the scene, thus excluding complex self-shadows and restricting surface classes to smooth ones. Although promising, such simplifications hinder generalizability to more realistic settings encountered in daily use. In this paper, we propose a new challenging task termed Ambient Lighting Normalization (ALN), which enables the study of interactions between shadows, unifying image restoration and shadow removal in a broader context. To address the lack of appropriate datasets for ALN, we introduce the large-scale high-resolution dataset Ambient6K, comprising samples obtained from multiple light sources and including self-shadows resulting from complex geometries, which is the first of its kind. For benchmarking, we select various mainstream methods and rigorously evaluate them on Ambient6K. Additionally, we propose IFBlend, a novel strong baseline that maximizes I mage-F requency joint entropy to selectively restore local areas under different lighting conditions, without relying on shadow localization priors. Experiments show that IFBlend achieves SOTA scores on Ambient6K and exhibits competitive performance on conventional shadow removal benchmarks compared to shadow-specific models with mask priors. The dataset, benchmark, and code are available at https://github.com/fvasluianu97/IFBlend."

Towards High-Quality 3D Motion Transfer with Realistic Apparel Animation

展开摘要

"Animating stylized characters to match a reference motion sequence is a highly demanded task in film and gaming industries. Existing methods mostly focus on rigid deformations of characters’ body, neglecting local deformations on the apparel driven by physical dynamics. They deform apparel the same way as the body, leading to results with limited details and unrealistic artifacts, e.g. body-apparel penetration. In contrast, we present a novel method aiming for high-quality motion transfer with realistic apparel animation. As existing datasets lack annotations necessary for generating realistic apparel animations, we build a new dataset named MMDMC, which combines stylized characters from the MikuMikuDance community with real-world Motion Capture data. We then propose a data-driven pipeline that learns to disentangle body and apparel deformations via two neural deformation modules. For body parts, we propose a geodesic attention block to effectively incorporate semantic priors into skeletal body deformation to tackle complex body shapes for stylized characters. Since apparel motion can significantly deviate from respective body joints, we propose to model apparel deformation in a non-linear vertex displacement field conditioned on its historic states. Extensive experiments show that our method produces results with superior quality for various types of apparel. Our dataset is released in https://github.com/rongakowang/MMDMC."

Towards Certifiably Robust Face Recognition

展开摘要

"Adversarial perturbation is a severe threat to deep learning-based systems such as classification and recognition because it makes the system output wrong answers. Designing robust systems against adversarial perturbation in a certifiable manner is important, especially for security-related systems such as face recognition. However, most studies for certifiable robustness are about classifiers, which have quite different characteristics from recognition systems for verification; the former is used in the closed-set scenario, whereas the latter is used in the open-set scenario. In this study, we show that, similar to the image classifications, 1-Lipschitz condition is sufficient for certifiable robustness of the face recognition system. Furthermore, for the given pair of facial images, we derive the upper bound of adversarial perturbation where 1-Lipschitz face recognition system remains robust. At last, we find that this theoretical result should be carefully applied in practice; Applying a training method to typical face recognition systems results in a very small upper bound for adversarial perturbation. We address this by proposing an alternative training method to attain a certifiably robust face recognition system with large upper bounds. All these theoretical results are supported by experiments on proof-of-concept implementation. We released our source code to facilitate further study, which is available at github."

Towards Architecture-Agnostic Untrained Networks Priors for Image Reconstruction with Frequency Regularization

展开摘要

"Untrained networks inspired by deep image priors have shown promising capabilities in recovering high-quality images from noisy or partial measurements without requiring training sets. Their success is widely attributed to implicit regularization due to the spectral bias of suitable network architectures. However, the application of such network-based priors often entails superfluous architectural decisions, risks of overfitting, and lengthy optimization processes, all of which hinder their practicality. To address these challenges, we propose efficient architecture-agnostic techniques to directly modulate the spectral bias of network priors: 1) bandwidth-constrained input, 2) bandwidth-controllable upsamplers, and 3) Lipschitz-regularized convolutional layers. We show that, with just a few lines of code, we can reduce overfitting in underperforming architectures and close performance gaps with high-performing counterparts, minimizing the need for extensive architecture tuning. This makes it possible to employ a more compact model to achieve performance similar or superior to larger models while reducing runtime. Demonstrated on inpainting-like MRI reconstruction task, our results signify for the first time that architectural biases, overfitting, and runtime issues of untrained network priors can be simultaneously addressed without architectural modifications. Our code is publicly available 1 . 1 https://github.com/YilinLiu97/Untrained-Recon.git"

Towards Adaptive Pseudo-label Learning for Semi-Supervised Temporal Action Localization

Feixiang Zhou, Bryan Williams, Hossein Rahmani

展开摘要

"Alleviating noisy pseudo labels remains a key challenge in Semi-Supervised Temporal Action Localization (SS-TAL). Existing methods often filter pseudo labels based on strict conditions, but they typically assess classification and localization quality separately, leading to suboptimal pseudo-label ranking and selection. In particular, there might be inaccurate pseudo labels within selected positives, alongside reliable counterparts erroneously assigned to negatives. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel Adaptive Pseudo-label Learning (APL) framework to facilitate better pseudo-label selection. Specifically, to improve the ranking quality, Adaptive Label Quality Assessment (ALQA) is proposed to jointly learn classification confidence and localization reliability, followed by dynamically selecting pseudo labels based on the joint score. Additionally, we propose an Instance-level Consistency Discriminator (ICD) for eliminating ambiguous positives and mining potential positives simultaneously based on inter-instance intrinsic consistency, thereby leading to a more precise selection. We further introduce a general unsupervised Action-aware Contrastive Pre-training (ACP) to enhance the discrimination both within actions and between actions and backgrounds, which benefits SS-TAL. Extensive experiments on THUMOS14 and ActivityNet v1.3 demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance under various semi-supervised settings."

Toward Tiny and High-quality Facial Makeup with Data Amplify Learning

展开摘要

"Contemporary makeup approaches primarily hinge on unpaired learning paradigms, yet they grapple with the challenges of inaccurate supervision (e.g., face misalignment) and sophisticated facial prompts (including face parsing, and landmark detection). These challenges prohibit low-cost deployment of facial makeup models, especially on mobile devices. To solve above problems, we propose a brand-new learning paradigm, termed ”Data Amplify Learning (DAL),” alongside a compact makeup model named ”TinyBeauty.” The core idea of DAL lies in employing a Diffusion-based Data Amplifier (DDA) to ”amplify” limited images for the model training, thereby enabling accurate pixel-to-pixel supervision with merely a handful of annotations. Two pivotal innovations in DDA facilitate the above training approach: (1) A Residual Diffusion Model (RDM) is designed to generate high-fidelity detail and circumvent the detail vanishing problem in the vanilla diffusion models; (2) A Fine-Grained Makeup Module (FGMM) is proposed to achieve precise makeup control and combination while retaining face identity. Coupled with DAL, TinyBeauty necessitates merely 80K parameters to achieve a state-of-the-art performance without intricate face prompts. Meanwhile, TinyBeauty achieves a remarkable inference speed of up to 460 fps on the iPhone 13. Extensive experiments show that DAL can produce highly competitive makeup models using only 5 image pairs. Please visit https://github.com/TinyBeauty for code and demos."

展开摘要

"An increasingly massive number of remote-sensing images spurs the development of extensible object detectors that can detect objects beyond training categories without costly collecting new labeled data. In this paper, we aim to develop open-vocabulary object detection (OVD) technique in aerial images that scales up object vocabulary size beyond training data. The performance of OVD greatly relies on the quality of class-agnostic region proposals and pseudo-labels for novel object categories. To simultaneously generate high-quality proposals and pseudo-labels, we propose CastDet, a CLIP-activated student-teacher open-vocabulary object Detection framework. Our end-to-end framework following the student-teacher self-learning mechanism employs the RemoteCLIP model as an extra omniscient teacher with rich knowledge. By doing so, our approach boosts not only novel object proposals but also classification. Furthermore, we devise a dynamic label queue strategy to maintain high-quality pseudo labels during batch training. We conduct extensive experiments on multiple existing aerial object detection datasets, which are set up for the OVD task. Experimental results demonstrate our CastDet achieving superior open-vocabulary detection performance, e.g., reaching 46.5% mAP on VisDroneZSD novel categories, which outperforms the state-of-the-art open-vocabulary detectors by 21.0% mAP. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to apply and develop the open-vocabulary object detection technique for aerial images. The code is available at https://github.com/lizzy8587/CastDet."

Toward INT4 Fixed-Point Training via Exploring Quantization Error for Gradients

展开摘要

"Network quantization generally converts full-precision weights and/or activations into low-bit fixed-point values in order to accelerate an inference process. Recent approaches to network quantization further discretize the gradients into low-bit fixed-point values, enabling an efficient training. They typically set a quantization interval using a min-max range of the gradients or adjust the interval such that the quantization error for entire gradients is minimized. In this paper, we analyze the quantization error of gradients for the low-bit fixed-point training, and show that lowering the error for large-magnitude gradients boosts the quantization performance significantly. Based on this, we derive an upper bound of quantization error for the large gradients in terms of the quantization interval, and obtain an optimal condition for the interval minimizing the quantization error for large gradients. We also introduce an interval update algorithm that adjusts the quantization interval adaptively to maintain a small quantization error for large gradients. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our quantization method for various combinations of network architectures and bit-widths on various tasks, including image classification, object detection, and super-resolution."

Topology-Preserving Downsampling of Binary Images

Chia-Chia Chen*, Chi-Han Peng

展开摘要

"We present a novel discrete optimization-based approach to generate downsampled versions of binary images that are guaranteed to have the same topology as the original, measured by the zeroth and first Betti numbers of the black regions, while having good similarity to the original image as measured by IoU and Dice scores. To our best knowledge, all existing binary image downsampling methods don’t have such topology-preserving guarantees. We also implemented a baseline morphological operation (dilation)-based approach that always generates topologically correct results. However, we found the similarity scores to be much worse. We demonstrate several applications of our approach. First, generating smaller versions of medical image segmentation masks for easier human inspection. Second, improving the efficiency of binary image operations, including persistent homology computation and shortest path computation, by substituting the original images with smaller ones. In particular, the latter is a novel application that is made feasible only by the full topology-preservation guarantee of our method."

Topo4D: Topology-Preserving Gaussian Splatting for High-Fidelity 4D Head Capture

展开摘要

"Recent significant advances in high-quality face reconstruction have been made, but challenges remain in 4D face asset reconstruction. 4D head capture aims to generate dynamic topological meshes and corresponding texture maps from videos, which is widely utilized in movies and games for its ability to simulate facial muscle movements and recover dynamic textures in pore-squeezing. The industry often adopts a method involving multi-view stereo and non-rigid alignment. However, this approach is prone to errors and heavily relies on time-consuming manual processing by artists. To simplify this process, we propose Topo4D, a novel framework for automatic geometry and texture generation that optimizes densely aligned 4D heads and 8K texture maps directly from calibrated multi-view time-series images. Specifically, we first represent the time-series faces as a set of dynamic 3D Gaussians with fixed topology in which the Gaussian centers are bound to the mesh vertices. Afterward, we optimize geometry and texture frame-by-frame alternatively for dynamic head capture while maintaining temporal topology stability. Finally, we can extract dynamic facial meshes in regular wiring arrangement and high-fidelity textures with pore-level details from the learned Gaussians. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves superior results than the current SOTA face reconstruction methods in the quality of both meshes and textures. Tokenize Anything via Prompting

展开摘要

"We present a unified, promptable model capable of simultaneously segmenting, recognizing, and captioning anything. Unlike SAM, we aim to build a versatile region representation in the wild via visual prompting. To achieve this, we train a generalizable model with massive segmentation masks, , SA-1B masks, and semantic priors from a pre-trained CLIP model with 5 billion parameters. Specifically, we construct a promptable image decoder by adding a semantic token to each mask token. The semantic token is responsible for learning the semantic priors in a predefined concept space. Through joint optimization of segmentation on mask tokens and concept prediction on semantic tokens, our model exhibits strong regional recognition and localization capabilities. For example, an additional 38M-parameter causal text decoder trained from scratch sets a new record with a CIDEr score of 164.7 on the Visual Genome region captioning task. We believe this model can be a versatile region-level image tokenizer, capable of encoding general-purpose region context for a broad range of visual perception tasks. Token Compensator: Altering Inference Cost of Vision Transformer without Re-Tuning

Shibo Jie, Yehui Tang, Jianyuan Guo, Zhi-Hong Deng, Kai Han, Yunhe Wang

展开摘要

"Token compression expedites the training and inference of Vision Transformers (ViTs) by reducing the number of the redundant tokens, , pruning inattentive tokens or merging similar tokens. However, when applied to downstream tasks, these approaches suffer from significant performance drop when the compression degrees are mismatched between training and inference stages, which limits the application of token compression on off-the-shelf trained models. In this paper, we propose a model arithmetic framework to decouple the compression degrees between the two stages. In advance, we additionally perform a fast parameter-efficient self-distillation stage on the pre-trained models to obtain a small plugin, called Token Compensator (ToCom), which describes the gap between models across different compression degrees. During inference, ToCom can be directly inserted into any downstream off-the-shelf models with any mismatched training and inference compression degrees to acquire universal performance improvements without further training. Experiments on over 20 downstream tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. On CIFAR100, fine-grained visual classification, and VTAB-1k benchmark, ToCom can yield up to a maximum improvement of 2.3%, 1.5%, and 2.0% in the average performance of DeiT-B, respectively. 1 Corresponding Author."

To Supervise or Not to Supervise: Understanding and Addressing the Key Challenges of Point Cloud Transfer Learning

Souhail Hadgi, Lei Li, Maks Ovsjanikov

展开摘要

"Transfer learning has long been a key factor in the advancement of many fields including 2D image analysis. Unfortunately, its applicability in 3D data processing has been relatively limited. While several approaches for point cloud transfer learning have been proposed in recent literature, with contrastive learning gaining particular prominence, most existing methods in this domain have only been studied and evaluated in limited scenarios. Most importantly, there is currently a lack of principled understanding of both when and why point cloud transfer learning methods are applicable. Remarkably, even the applicability of standard supervised pre-training is poorly understood. In this work, we conduct the first in-depth quantitative and qualitative investigation of supervised and contrastive pre-training strategies and their utility in downstream 3D tasks. We demonstrate that layer-wise analysis of learned features provides significant insight into the downstream utility of trained networks. Informed by this analysis, we propose a simple geometric regularization strategy, which improves the transferability of supervised pre-training. Our work thus sheds light onto both the specific challenges of point cloud transfer learning, as well as strategies to overcome them."

展开摘要

"The recent advances in diffusion models (DMs) have revolutionized the generation of realistic and complex images. However, these models also introduce potential safety hazards, such as producing harmful content and infringing data copyrights. Despite the development of safety-driven unlearning techniques to counteract these challenges, doubts about their efficacy persist. To tackle this issue, we introduce an evaluation framework that leverages adversarial prompts to discern the trustworthiness of these safety-driven DMs after they have undergone the process of unlearning harmful concepts. Specifically, we investigated the adversarial robustness of DMs, assessed by adversarial prompts, when eliminating unwanted concepts, styles, and objects. We develop an effective and efficient adversarial prompt generation approach for DMs, termed . This method capitalizes on the intrinsic classification abilities of DMs to simplify the creation of adversarial prompts, thereby eliminating the need for auxiliary classification or diffusion models. Through extensive benchmarking, we evaluate the robustness of widely-used safety-driven unlearned DMs (i.e., DMs after unlearning undesirable concepts, styles, or objects) across a variety of tasks. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency merits of over the state-of-the-art adversarial prompt generation method and reveal the lack of robustness of current safety-driven unlearning techniques when applied to DMs. Codes are available at https://github.com/OPTML-Group/Diffusion-MU-Attack. Tiny Models are the Computational Saver for Large Models

Qingyuan Wang, Barry Cardiff, Antoine Frappé, Benoit Larras, Deepu John

展开摘要

"This paper introduces TinySaver, an early-exit-like dynamic model compression approach which employs tiny models to substitute large models adaptively. Distinct from traditional compression techniques, dynamic methods like TinySaver can leverage the difficulty differences to allow certain inputs to complete their inference processes early, thereby conserving computational resources. Most existing early exit designs are implemented by attaching additional network branches to the model’s backbone. Our study, however, reveals that completely independent tiny models can replace a substantial portion of the larger models’ job with minimal impact on performance. Employing them as the first exit can remarkably enhance computational efficiency. By searching and employing the most appropriate tiny model as the computational saver for a given large model, the proposed approaches work as a novel and generic method to model compression. This finding will help the research community in exploring new compression methods to address the escalating computational demands posed by rapidly evolving AI models. Our evaluation of this approach in ImageNet-1k classification demonstrates its potential to reduce the number of compute operations by up to 90%, with only negligible losses in performance, across various modern vision models."

Timestep-Aware Correction for Quantized Diffusion Models

Yuzhe YAO, Feng Tian, Jun Chen, Haonan Lin, Guang Dai, Yong Liu, Jingdong Wang

展开摘要

"Diffusion models have marked a significant breakthrough in the synthesis of semantically coherent images. However, their extensive noise estimation networks and the iterative generation process limit their wider application, particularly on resource-constrained platforms like mobile devices. Existing post-training quantization (PTQ) methods have managed to compress diffusion models to low precision. Nevertheless, due to the iterative nature of diffusion models, quantization errors tend to accumulate throughout the generation process. This accumulation of error becomes particularly problematic in low-precision scenarios, leading to significant distortions in the generated images. We attribute this accumulation issue to two main causes: error propagation and exposure bias. To address these problems, we propose a timestep-aware correction method for quantized diffusion model, which dynamically corrects the quantization error. By leveraging the proposed method in low-precision diffusion models, substantial enhancement of output quality could be achieved with only negligible computation overhead. Extensive experiments underscore our method’s effectiveness and generalizability. By employing the proposed correction strategy, we achieve state-of-the-art (SOTA) results on low-precision models."

TimeLens-XL: Real-time Event-based Video Frame Interpolation with Large Motion

Shi Guo, Yutian Chen, Tianfan Xue, Jinwei Gu, Yongrui Ma

展开摘要

"Video Frame Interpolation (VFI) aims to predict intermediate frames between consecutive low frame rate inputs. To handle the real-world complex motion between frames, event cameras, which capture high-frequency brightness changes at micro-second temporal resolution, are used to aid interpolation, denoted as Event-VFI. One critical step of Event-VFI is optical flow estimation. Prior methods that adopt either a two-segment formulation or a parametric trajectory model cannot correctly recover large and complex motions between frames, which suffer from accumulated error in flow estimation. To solve this problem, we propose TimeLens-XL, a physically grounded lightweight network that decomposes large motion between two frames into a sequence of small motions for better accuracy. It estimates the entire motion trajectory recursively and samples the bi-directional flow for VFI. Benefiting from the accurate and robust flow prediction, intermediate frames can be efficiently synthesized with simple warping and blending. As a result, the network is extremely lightweight, with only 1/5∼1/10 computational cost and model size of prior works, while also achieving state-of-the-art performance on several challenging benchmarks. To our knowledge, TimeLens-XL is the first real-time (27FPS) Event-VFI algorithm at a resolution of 1280 × 720 using a single RTX 3090 GPU. Furthermore, we have collected a new RGB+Event dataset (HQ-EVFI) consisting of more than 100 challenging scenes with large complex motions and accurately synchronized high-quality RGB-EVS streams. HQ-EVFI addresses several limitations presented in prior datasets and can serve as a new benchmark. TimeCraft: Navigate Weakly-Supervised Temporal Grounded Video Question Answering via Bi-directional Reasoning

Huabin Liu, Xiao Ma, Cheng Zhong, Yang Zhang, Weiyao Lin

展开摘要

"Video reasoning typically operates within the Video Question-Answering (VQA) paradigm, which demands that the models understand and reason about video content from temporal and causal perspectives. Traditional supervised VQA methods gain this capability through meticulously annotated QA datasets, while advanced visual-language models exhibit remarkable performance due to large-scale visual-text pretraining data. Nevertheless, due to potential language bias and spurious visual-text correlations in cross-modal learning, concerns about the reliability of their answers persist in real-world applications. In this paper, we focus on the grounded VQA task, which necessitates models to provide answers along with explicit visual evidence, i.e., certain video segments. As temporal annotation is not available during training, we propose a novel bi-directional reasoning framework to perform grounded VQA in a weakly-supervised setting. Specifically, our framework consists of two parallel but dual reasoning paths. They conduct temporal grounding and answering based on the video content, approaching it from two dual directions that are symmetrical in terms of temporal order or causal relationships. By constructing a cycle-consistency relationship between these two branches, the model is prompted to provide self-guidance supervision for both temporal grounding and answering. Experiments conducted on the Next-GQA and Env-QA datasets demonstrate that our framework achieves superior performance in grounded VQA and can provide reasonable temporal locations that validate the answers."
