Bidirectional Stereo Image Compression with Cross-Dimensional Entropy Model

Zhening Liu, Xinjie Zhang, Jiawei Shao, Zehong Lin, Jun Zhang

展开摘要

"With the rapid advancement of stereo vision technologies, stereo image compression has emerged as a crucial field that continues to draw significant attention. Previous approaches have primarily employed a unidirectional paradigm, where the compression of one view is dependent on the other, resulting in imbalanced compression. To address this issue, we introduce a symmetric bidirectional stereo image compression architecture, named BiSIC. Specifically, we propose a 3D convolution based codec backbone to capture local features and incorporate bidirectional attention blocks to exploit global features. Moreover, we design a novel cross-dimensional entropy model that integrates various conditioning factors, including the spatial context, channel context, and stereo dependency, to effectively estimate the distribution of latent representations for entropy coding. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed BiSIC outperforms conventional image/video compression standards, as well as state-of-the-art learning-based methods, in terms of both PSNR and MS-SSIM."

Bidirectional Progressive Transformer for Interaction Intention Anticipation

Zichen Zhang, Hongchen Luo, Wei Zhai, Yu Kang, Yang Cao

展开摘要

"Interaction intention anticipation aims to jointly predict future hand trajectories and interaction hotspots. Existing research often treated trajectory forecasting and interaction hotspots prediction as separate tasks or solely considered the impact of trajectories on interaction hotspots, which led to the accumulation of prediction errors over time. However, a deeper inherent connection exists between hand trajectories and interaction hotspots, which allows for continuous mutual correction between them. Building upon this relationship, a novel Bidirectional prOgressive T ransformer (BOT ), which introduces a Bidirectional Progressive mechanism into the anticipation of interaction intention is established. Initially, BOT maximizes the utilization of spatial information from the last observation frame through the Spatial-Temporal Reconstruction Module, mitigating conflicts arising from changes of view in first-person videos. Subsequently, based on two independent prediction branches, a Bidirectional Progressive Enhancement Module is introduced to mutually improve the prediction of hand trajectories and interaction hotspots over time to minimize error accumulation. Finally, acknowledging the intrinsic randomness in human natural behavior, we employ a Trajectory Stochastic Unit and a C-VAE to introduce appropriate uncertainty to trajectories and interaction hotspots, respectively. Our method achieves state-of-the-art results on three benchmark datasets Epic-Kitchens-100 , EGO4D, and EGTEA Gaze+, demonstrating superior in complex scenarios. 0 *Corresponding Author."

Bi-directional Contextual Attention for 3D Dense Captioning

展开摘要

"3D dense captioning is a task involving the localization of objects and the generation of descriptions for each object in a 3D scene. Recent approaches have attempted to incorporate contextual information by modeling relationships with object pairs or aggregating the nearest neighbor features of an object. However, the contextual information constructed in these scenarios is limited in two aspects: first, objects have multiple positional relationships that exist across the entire global scene, not only near the object itself. Second, it faces with contradicting objectives–where localization and attribute descriptions are generated better with tight localization, while descriptions involving global positional relations are generated better with contextualized features of the global scene. To overcome this challenge, we introduce , a transformer encoder-decoder pipeline that engages in 3D dense captioning for each object with Bi-directional Contextual Attention. Leveraging parallelly decoded instance queries for objects and context queries for non-object contexts, BiCA generates object-aware contexts, where the contexts relevant to each object is summarized, and context-aware objects, where the objects relevant to the summarized object-aware contexts are aggregated. This extension relieves previous methods from the contradicting objectives, enhancing both localization performance and enabling the aggregation of contextual features throughout the global scene; thus improving caption generation performance simultaneously. Extensive experiments on two of the most widely-used 3D dense captioning datasets demonstrate that our proposed method achieves a significant improvement over prior methods."

Bi-TTA: Bidirectional Test-Time Adapter for Remote Physiological Measurement

Haodong LI, Hao Lu, Yingcong Chen

展开摘要

"Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) is gaining prominence for its non-invasive approach to monitoring physiological signals using only cameras. Despite its promise, the adaptability of rPPG models to new, unseen domains is hindered due to the environmental sensitivity of physiological signals. To address this issue, we pioneer the Test-Time Adaptation (TTA) in rPPG, enabling the adaptation of pre-trained models to the target domain during inference, sidestepping the need for annotations or source data due to privacy considerations. Particularly, utilizing only the user’s face video stream as the accessible target domain data, the rPPG model is adjusted by tuning on each single instance it encounters. However, 1) TTA algorithms are designed predominantly for classification tasks, ill-suited in regression tasks such as rPPG due to inadequate supervision. 2) Tuning pre-trained models in a single-instance manner introduces variability and instability, posing challenges to effectively filtering domain-relevant from domain-irrelevant features while simultaneously preserving the learned information. To overcome these challenges, we present Bi-TTA, a novel expert knowledge-based Bidirectional Test-Time Adapter framework. Specifically, leveraging two expert-knowledge priors for providing self-supervision, our Bi-TTA primarily comprises two modules: a prospective adaptation (PA) module using sharpness-aware minimization to eliminate domain-irrelevant noise, enhancing the stability and efficacy during the adaptation process, and a retrospective stabilization (RS) module to dynamically reinforce crucial learned model parameters, averting performance degradation caused by overfitting or catastrophic forgetting. To this end, we established a large-scale benchmark for rPPG tasks under TTA protocol, promoting advancements in both the rPPG and TTA fields. The experimental results demonstrate the significant superiority of our approach over the state-of-the-art (SoTA)."

BeyondScene: Higher-Resolution Human-Centric Scene Generation With Pretrained Diffusion

展开摘要

"Generating higher-resolution human-centric scenes with details and controls remains a challenge for existing text-to-image diffusion models. This challenge stems from limited training image size, text encoder capacity (limited tokens), and the inherent difficulty of generating complex scenes involving multiple humans. While current methods attempted to address training size limit only, they often yielded human-centric scenes with severe artifacts. We propose BeyondScene, a novel framework that overcomes prior limitations, generating exquisite higher-resolution (over 8K) human-centric scenes with exceptional text-image correspondence and naturalness using existing pretrained diffusion models. BeyondScene employs a staged and hierarchical approach to initially generate a detailed base image focusing on crucial elements in instance creation for multiple humans and detailed descriptions beyond token limit of diffusion model, and then to seamlessly convert the base image to a higher-resolution output, exceeding training image size and incorporating details aware of text and instances via our novel instance-aware hierarchical enlargement process that consists of our proposed high-frequency injected forward diffusion and adaptive joint diffusion. BeyondScene surpasses existing methods in terms of correspondence with detailed text descriptions and naturalness, paving the way for advanced applications in higher-resolution human-centric scene creation beyond the capacity of pretrained diffusion models without costly retraining. Beyond the Data Imbalance: Employing the Heterogeneous Datasets for Vehicle Maneuver Prediction

展开摘要

"Predicting the maneuvers of surrounding vehicles is imperative for the safe navigation of autonomous vehicles. However, naturalistic driving datasets tend to be highly imbalanced, with a bias towards the ”going straight” maneuver. Consequently, learning and accurately predicting turning maneuvers pose significant challenges. In this study, we propose a novel two-stage maneuver learning method that can overcome such strong biases by leveraging two heterogeneous datasets in a complementary manner. In the first training phase, we utilize an intersection-centric dataset characterized by balanced distribution of maneuver classes to learn the representations of each maneuver. Subsequently, in the second training phase, we incorporate an ego-centric driving dataset to account for various geometrical road shapes, by transferring the knowledge of geometric diversity to the maneuver prediction model. To facilitate this, we constructed an in-house intersection-centric trajectory dataset with a well-balanced maneuver distribution. By harnessing the power of heterogeneous datasets, our framework significantly improves maneuver prediction performance, particularly for minority maneuver classes such as turning maneuvers. The dataset is available at https: //github.com/KAIST-VDCLab/VDC-Trajectory-Dataset."

Beyond the Contact: Discovering Comprehensive Affordance for 3D Objects from Pre-trained 2D Diffusion Models

展开摘要

"Understanding the inherent human knowledge in interacting with a given environment (e.g., affordance) is essential for improving AI to better assist humans. While existing approaches primarily focus on human-object contacts during interactions, such affordance representation cannot fully address other important aspects of human-object interactions (HOIs), i.e. patterns of relative positions and orientations. In this paper, we introduce a novel affordance representation, named Comprehensive Affordance (ComA). Given a 3D object mesh, ComA models the distribution of relative orientation and proximity of vertices in interacting human meshes, capturing plausible patterns of contact, relative orientations, and spatial relationships. To construct the distribution, we present a novel pipeline that synthesizes diverse and realistic 3D HOI samples given any 3D target object mesh. The pipeline leverages a pre-trained 2D inpainting diffusion model to generate HOI images from object renderings and lifts them into 3D. To avoid the generation of false affordances, we propose a new inpainting framework, Adaptive Mask Inpainting. Since ComA is built on synthetic samples, it can extend to any object in an unbounded manner. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that ComA outperforms competitors that rely on human annotations in modeling contact-based affordance. Importantly, we also showcase the potential of ComA to reconstruct human-object interactions in 3D through an optimization framework, highlighting its advantage in incorporating both contact and non-contact properties."

Beyond Viewpoint: Robust 3D Object Recognition under Arbitrary Views through Joint Multi-Part Representation

Linlong Fan, Ye Huang, Yanqi Ge, Wen Li, Lixin Duan

展开摘要

"Existing view-based methods excel at recognizing 3D objects from predefined viewpoints, but their exploration of recognition under arbitrary views is limited. This is a challenging and realistic setting because each object has different viewpoint positions and quantities, and their poses are not aligned. However, most view-based methods, which aggregate multiple view features to obtain a global feature representation, hard to address 3D object recognition under arbitrary views. Due to the unaligned inputs from arbitrary views, it is challenging to robustly aggregate features, leading to performance degradation. In this paper, we introduce a novel Part-aware Network (PANet), which is a part-based representation, to address these issues. This part-based representation aims to localize and understand different parts of 3D objects, such as airplane wings and tails. It has properties such as viewpoint invariance and rotation robustness, which give it an advantage in addressing the 3D object recognition problem under arbitrary views. Our results on benchmark datasets clearly demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing view-based aggregation baselines for the task of 3D object recognition under arbitrary views, even surpassing most fixed viewpoint methods."

Beyond Prompt Learning: Continual Adapter for Efficient Rehearsal-Free Continual Learning

展开摘要

"The problem of Rehearsal-Free Continual Learning (RFCL) aims to continually learn new knowledge while preventing forgetting of the old knowledge, without storing any old samples and prototypes. The latest methods leverage large-scale pre-trained models as the backbone and use key-query matching to generate trainable prompts to learn new knowledge. However, the domain gap between the pre-training dataset and the downstream datasets can easily lead to inaccuracies in key-query matching prompt selection when directly generating queries using the pre-trained model, which hampers learning new knowledge. Thus, in this paper, we propose a beyond prompt learning approach to the RFCL task, called Continual Adapter (C-ADA). It mainly comprises a parameter-extensible continual adapter layer (CAL) and a scaling and shifting (S&S) module in parallel with the pre-trained model. C-ADA flexibly extends specific weights in CAL to learn new knowledge for each task and freezes old weights to preserve prior knowledge, thereby avoiding matching errors and operational inefficiencies introduced by key-query matching. To reduce the gap, C-ADA employs an S&S module to transfer the feature space from pre-trained datasets to downstream datasets. Moreover, we propose an orthogonal loss to mitigate the interaction between old and new knowledge. Our approach achieves significantly improved performance and training speed, outperforming the current state-of-the-art (SOTA) method. Additionally, we conduct experiments on domain-incremental learning, surpassing the SOTA, and demonstrating the generality of our approach in different settings."

展开摘要

"Incorporating pixel contextual information is critical for accurate segmentation. In this paper, we show that an effective way to incorporate contextual information is through a patch-based classifier. This patch classifier is trained to identify classes present within an image region, which facilitates the elimination of distractors and enhances the classification of small object segments. Specifically, we introduce Multi-scale Patch-based Multi-label Classifier (MPMC), a novel plug-in module designed for existing semi-supervised segmentation (SSS) frameworks. MPMC offers patch-level supervision, enabling the discrimination of pixel regions of different classes within a patch. Furthermore, MPMC learns an adaptive pseudo-label weight, using patch-level classification to alleviate the impact of the teacher’s noisy pseudo-label supervision on the student. This lightweight module can be integrated into any SSS framework, significantly enhancing their performance. We demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed MPMC by integrating it into four SSS methodologies and improving them across two natural image and one medical segmentation dataset, notably improving the segmentation results of the baselines across all the three datasets. Beyond MOT: Semantic Multi-Object Tracking

展开摘要

"Current multi-object tracking (MOT) aims to predict trajectories of targets (, “where”) in videos. Yet, knowing merely “where” is insufficient in many crucial applications. In comparison, semantic understanding such as fine-grained behaviors, interactions, and overall summarized captions (, “what”) from videos, associated with “where”, is highly-desired for comprehensive video analysis. Thus motivated, we introduce Semantic Multi-Object Tracking (SMOT), that aims to estimate object trajectories and meanwhile understand semantic details of associated trajectories including instance captions, instance interactions, and overall video captions, integrating “where” and “what” for tracking. In order to foster the exploration of SMOT, we propose BenSMOT, a large-scale Benchmark for Semantic MOT. Specifically, BenSMOT comprises 3,292 videos with 151K frames, covering various scenarios for semantic tracking of humans. BenSMOT provides annotations for the trajectories of targets, along with associated instance captions in natural language, instance interactions, and overall caption for each video sequence. To our best knowledge, BenSMOT is the first publicly available benchmark for SMOT. Besides, to encourage future research, we present a novel tracker named SMOTer, which is specially designed and end-to-end trained for SMOT, showing promising performance. By releasing BenSMOT, we expect to go beyond conventional MOT by predicting “where” and “what” for SMOT, opening up a new direction in tracking for video understanding. We will release BenSMOT and SMOTer at https://github.com/Nathan-Li123/SMOTer."

Better Regression Makes Better Test-time Adaptive 3D Object Detection

展开摘要

"Domain Adaptation (DA) has been widely explored and made significant progress on cross-domain 3D tasks recently. Despite being effective, existing works fail to deal with rapidly changing domains due to the unpredictable test time scenarios and meanwhile fast response time requirement. Thus, we explore a new task named test-time domain adaptive 3D object detection and propose Reg-TTA3D, a pseudo-label-based test-time adaptative 3D object detection method. By investigating the factor that limits the detection accuracy, we find that regression is essential in this task. To make better regression, we first design a noise-consistency pseudo-label generation process to filter pseudo-labels with instability under noise interference and obtain reliable pseudo-labels. Then, confidence-guided regression refinement is introduced, which uses the box regression results of high-confidence boxes to supervise boxes with relatively low confidence, further making the predicted box size gradually approach the distribution of the target domain. Finally, to better update the regression layer and alleviate the class-imbalance issue, a class-balance EMA updating strategy is proposed. Experimental results on multiple cross-domain scenarios including cross-beam, cross-location, and cross-weather demonstrate that Reg-TTA3D can achieve comparable or even better performance compared to unsupervised domain adaptation works by only updating less than 0.1% parameters within less than 1% time."

展开摘要

"We propose the (Segment Anything in Lidar) method consisting of a text-promptable zero-shot model for segmenting and classifying any object in Lidar, and a pseudo-labeling engine that facilitates model training without manual supervision. While the established paradigm for (LPS) relies on manual supervision for a handful of object classes defined a priori, we utilize 2D vision foundation models to generate 3D supervision “for free”. Our pseudo-labels consist of instance masks and corresponding CLIP tokens, which we lift to Lidar using calibrated multi-modal data. By training our model on these labels, we distill the 2D foundation models into our Lidar model. Even without manual labels, our model achieves 91% in terms of class-agnostic segmentation and 54% in terms of zero-shot LPS of the fully supervised state-of-the-art. Furthermore, we outperform several baselines that do not distill but only lift image features to 3D. More importantly, we demonstrate that supports arbitrary class prompts, can be easily extended to new datasets, and shows significant potential to improve with increasing amounts of self-labeled data. We release all models and the code."

展开摘要

"In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective approach for self-supervised video object segmentation (VOS). Previous self-supervised VOS techniques majorly resort to auxiliary modalities or utilize iterative slot attention to assist in object discovery, which restricts their general applicability. To deal with these challenges, we develop a simplified architecture that capitalizes on the emerging objectness from DINO-pretrained Transformers, bypassing the need for additional modalities or slot attention. Our key insight is that the inherent structural dependencies present in DINO-pretrained Transformers can be leveraged to establish robust spatio-temporal correspondences in videos. Furthermore, simple clustering on this correspondence cue is sufficient to yield competitive segmentation results. Specifically, we first introduce a single spatio-temporal Transformer block to process the frame-wise DINO features and establish spatio-temporal dependencies in the form of self-attention. Subsequently, utilizing these attention maps, we implement hierarchical clustering to generate object segmentation masks. To train the spatio-temporal block in a fully self-supervised manner, we employ semantic and dynamic motion consistency coupled with entropy normalization. Our method demonstrates state-of-the-art performance across three multi-object video segmentation tasks. Specifically, we achieve over 5 points of improvement in terms of FG-ARI on complex real-world DAVIS-17-Unsupervised and YouTube-VIS-19 compared to the previous best result. The code and checkpoint are released at https://github.com/shvdiwnkozbw/SSL-UVOS."

Beta-Tuned Timestep Diffusion Model

展开摘要

"Diffusion models have received a lot of attention in the field of generation due to their ability to produce high-quality samples. However, several recent studies indicate that treating all distributions equally in diffusion model training is sub-optimal. In this paper, we conduct an in-depth theoretical analysis of the forward process of diffusion models. Our findings reveal that the distribution variations are non-uniform throughout the diffusion process and the most drastic variations in distribution occur in the initial stages. Consequently, simple uniform timestep sampling strategy fail to align with these properties, potentially leading to sub-optimal training of diffusion models. To address this, we propose the Beta-Tuned Timestep Diffusion Model (B-TTDM), which devises a timestep sampling strategy based on the beta distribution. By choosing the correct parameters, B-TTDM aligns the timestep sampling distribution with the properties of the forward diffusion process. Extensive experiments on different benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of B-TTDM."

展开摘要

"We interact with the world with our hands and see it through our own (egocentric) perspective. A holistic understanding of such interactions from egocentric views is important for tasks in robotics, AR/VR, action recognition and motion generation. Accurately reconstructing such interactions in is challenging due to heavy occlusion, viewpoint bias, camera distortion, and motion blur from the head movement. To this end, we designed the HANDS23 challenge based on the AssemblyHands and ARCTIC datasets with carefully designed training and testing splits. Based on the results of the top submitted methods and more recent baselines on the leaderboards, we perform a thorough analysis on hand(-object) reconstruction tasks. Our analysis demonstrates the effectiveness of addressing distortion specific to egocentric cameras, adopting high-capacity transformers to learn complex hand-object interactions, and fusing predictions from different views. Our study further reveals challenging scenarios intractable with state-of-the-art methods, such as fast hand motion, object reconstruction from narrow egocentric views, and close contact between two hands and objects. Our efforts will enrich the community’s knowledge foundation and facilitate future hand studies on egocentric hand-object interactions."

Benchmarking the Robustness of Cross-view Geo-localization Models

Qingwang Zhang, Yingying Zhu

展开摘要

"Cross-view geo-localization serves as a viable alternative to providing geographical location information when GPS signals are unstable or unavailable by matching ground images with geo-tagged aerial image databases. While significant progress has been made on some common benchmarks like CVUSA and CVACT, there remains a lack of comprehensive consideration for robustness against real-world environmental challenges such as adverse weather or sensor noise. This deficiency poses a significant challenge for deploying this technology in safety-critical domains like autonomous driving and robot navigation. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no specialized benchmark for evaluating the robustness of cross-view geo-localization. To comprehensively and fairly evaluate the robustness of cross-view geo-localization models in real-world scenarios, we introduce 16 common types of data corruption. By synthesizing these corruptions on public datasets, we establish two fine-grained corruption robustness benchmarks (CVUSA-C and CVACT val-C) and three comprehensive corruption robustness benchmarks (CVUSA-C-ALL, CVACT val-C-ALL, and CVACT test-C-ALL), covering approximately 1.5 million corrupted images. Subsequently, we conduct large-scale experiments on various cross-view geo-localization models to evaluate their robustness in corrupted environments and derive novel insights. Finally, we explore two data augmentation strategies as potential solutions to enhance model robustness. Combined with the training strategies proposed, these approaches effectively enhance the robustness of multiple models."

Benchmarking Spurious Bias in Few-Shot Image Classifiers

Guangtao Zheng, Wenqian Ye, Aidong Zhang

展开摘要

"Few-shot image classifiers are designed to recognize and classify new data with minimal supervision and limited data but often show reliance on spurious correlations between classes and spurious attributes, known as spurious bias. Spurious correlations commonly hold in certain samples and few-shot classifiers can suffer from spurious bias induced from them. There is an absence of an automatic benchmarking system to assess the robustness of few-shot classifiers against spurious bias. In this paper, we propose a systematic and rigorous benchmark framework, termed FewSTAB, to fairly demonstrate and quantify varied degrees of robustness of few-shot classifiers to spurious bias. FewSTAB creates few-shot evaluation tasks with biased attributes so that using them for predictions can demonstrate poor performance. To construct these tasks, we propose attribute-based sample selection strategies based on a pre-trained vision-language model, eliminating the need for manual dataset curation. This allows FewSTAB to automatically benchmark spurious bias using any existing test data. FewSTAB offers evaluation results in a new dimension along with a new design guideline for building robust classifiers. Moreover, it can benchmark spurious bias in varied degrees and enable designs for varied degrees of robustness. Its effectiveness is demonstrated through experiments on ten few-shot learning methods across three datasets. We hope our framework can inspire new designs of robust few-shot classifiers. Our code is available at https://github.com/ gtzheng/FewSTAB."

Benchmarking Object Detectors with COCO: A New Path Forward

Shweta Singh, Aayan Yadav, Jitesh Jain, Humphrey Shi, Justin Johnson, Karan Desai

展开摘要

"The Common Objects in Context (COCO) dataset has been instrumental in benchmarking object detectors over the past decade. Like every dataset, COCO contains subtle errors and imperfections stemming from its annotation procedure. With the advent of high-performing models, we ask whether these errors of COCO are hindering its utility in reliably benchmarking further progress. In search for an answer, we inspect thousands of masks from COCO (2017 version) and uncover different types of errors such as imprecise mask boundaries, non-exhaustively annotated instances, and mislabeled masks. Due to the prevalence of COCO, we choose to correct these errors to maintain continuity with prior research. We develop COCO-ReM (Refined Masks), a cleaner set of annotations with visibly better mask quality than COCO-2017. We evaluate fifty object detectors and find that models that predict visually sharper masks score higher on COCO-ReM, affirming that they were being incorrectly penalized due to errors in COCO-2017. Moreover, our models trained using COCO-ReM converge faster and score higher than their larger variants trained using COCO-2017, highlighting the importance of data quality in improving object detectors. With these findings, we advocate using COCO-ReM for future object detection research. Our dataset is available at https://cocorem.xyz"

展开摘要

"Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) such as GPT-4V and LLaVA have shown remarkable capabilities in visual reasoning on data in common image styles. However, their robustness against diverse style shifts, crucial for practical applications, remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we propose a new benchmark, BenchLMM, to assess the robustness of LMMs toward three different styles: artistic image style, imaging sensor style, and application style. Utilizing BenchLMM, we comprehensively evaluate state-of-the-art LMMs and reveal: 1) LMMs generally suffer performance degradation when working with other styles; 2) An LMM performs better than another model in common style does not guarantee its superior performance in other styles; 3) LMMs’ reasoning capability can be enhanced by prompting LMMs to predict the style first, based on which we propose a versatile and training-free method for improving LMMs; 4) An intelligent LMM is expected to interpret the causes of its errors when facing stylistic variations. We hope that our benchmark and analysis can shed new light on developing more intelligent and versatile LMMs. The benchmark and evaluation have been released on https://github.com/AIFEG/BenchLMM."
