Any Target Can be Offense: Adversarial Example Generation via Generalized Latent Infection

Youheng Sun, Shengming Yuan, Xuanhan Wang, Lianli Gao, Jingkuan Song

展开摘要

"Targeted adversarial attack, which aims to mislead a model to recognize any image as a target object by imperceptible perturbations, has become a mainstream tool for vulnerability assessment of deep neural networks (DNNs). Since existing targeted attackers only learn to attack known target classes, they cannot generalize well to unknown classes. To tackle this issue, we propose Generalized Adversarial attacKER (GAKer), which is able to construct adversarial examples to any target class. The core idea behind GAKer is to craft a latently infected representation during adversarial example generation. To this end, the extracted latent representations of the target object are first injected into intermediate features of an input image in an adversarial generator. Then, the generator is optimized to ensure visual consistency with the input image while being close to the target object in the feature space. Since the GAKer is class-agnostic yet model-agnostic, it can be regarded as a general tool that not only reveals the vulnerability of more DNNs but also identifies deficiencies of DNNs in a wider range of classes. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed method in generating adversarial examples for both known and unknown classes. Notably, compared with other generative methods, our method achieves an approximately 14.13% higher attack success rate for unknown classes and an approximately 4.23% higher success rate for known classes. Our code is available in https://github.com/VL-Group/GAKer."

展开摘要

"The field of photorealistic 3D avatar reconstruction and generation has garnered significant attention in recent years; however, animating such avatars remains challenging. Recent advances in diffusion models have notably enhanced the capabilities of generative models in 2D animation. In this work, we directly utilize these models within the 3D domain to achieve controllable and high-fidelity 4D facial animation. By integrating the strengths of diffusion processes and geometric deep learning, we employ Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) as denoising diffusion models in a novel approach, formulating the diffusion process directly on the mesh space and enabling the generation of 3D facial expressions. This facilitates the generation of facial deformations through a mesh-diffusion-based model. Additionally, to ensure temporal coherence in our animations, we propose a consistent noise sampling method. Under a series of both quantitative and qualitative experiments, we showcase that the proposed method outperforms prior work in 4D facial expression synthesis by generating high-fidelity extreme expressions. Furthermore, we applied our method to textured 4D facial expression generation, implementing a straightforward extension that involves training on a large-scale textured 4D facial expression database."

Animate Your Motion: Turning Still Images into Dynamic Videos

展开摘要

"In recent years, diffusion models have made remarkable strides in text-to-video generation, sparking a quest for enhanced control over video outputs to more accurately reflect user intentions. Traditional efforts predominantly focus on employing either semantic cues, like images or depth maps, or motion-based conditions, like moving sketches or object bounding boxes. Semantic inputs offer a rich scene context but lack detailed motion specificity; conversely, motion inputs provide precise trajectory information but miss the broader semantic narrative. For the first time, we integrate both semantic and motion cues within a diffusion model for video generation, as demonstrated in Fig. ??. To this end, we introduce the Scene and Motion Conditional Diffusion (SMCD), a novel methodology for managing multimodal inputs. It incorporates a recognized motion conditioning module [?] and investigates various approaches to integrate scene conditions, promoting synergy between different modalities. For model training, we separate the conditions for the two modalities, introducing a two-stage training pipeline. Experimental results demonstrate that our design significantly enhances video quality, motion precision, and semantic coherence."

展开摘要

"Advances in 3D generation have facilitated sequential 3D model generation (a.k.a 4D generation), yet its application for animatable objects with large motion remains scarce. Our work proposes AnimatableDreamer, a text-to-4D generation framework capable of generating diverse categories of non-rigid objects on skeletons extracted from a monocular video. At its core, AnimatableDreamer is equipped with our novel optimization design dubbed Canonical Score Distillation (CSD), which lifts 2D diffusion for temporal consistent 4D generation. CSD, designed from a score gradient perspective, generates a canonical model with warp-robustness across different articulations. Notably, it also enhances the authenticity of bones and skinning by integrating inductive priors from a diffusion model. Furthermore, with multi-view distillation, CSD infers invisible regions, thereby improving the fidelity of monocular non-rigid reconstruction. Extensive experiments demonstrate the capability of our method in generating high-flexibility text-guided 3D models from the monocular video, while also showing improved reconstruction performance over existing non-rigid reconstruction methods. 展开摘要

"Due to the scarcity of labeled data, self-supervised learning (SSL) has gained much attention in 3D medical image segmentation, by extracting semantic representations from unlabeled data. Among SSL strategies, Masked image modeling (MIM) has shown effectiveness by reconstructing randomly masked images to learn detailed representations. However, conventional MIM methods require extensive training data to achieve good performance, which still poses a challenge for medical imaging. Since random masking uniformly samples all regions within medical images, it may overlook crucial anatomical regions and thus degrade the pretraining efficiency. We propose AnatoMask, a novel MIM method that leverages reconstruction loss to dynamically identify and mask out anatomically significant regions to improve pretraining efficacy. AnatoMask takes a self-distillation approach, where the model learns both how to find more significant regions to mask and how to reconstruct these masked regions. To avoid suboptimal learning, Anatomask adjusts the pretraining difficulty progressively using a masking dynamics function. We have evaluated our method on 4 public datasets with multiple imaging modalities (CT, MRI, and PET). AnatoMask demonstrates superior performance and scalability compared to existing SSL methods. 展开摘要

"Deep learning approaches have made significant success in single-view 3D reconstruction, but they often rely on expensive 3D annotations for training. Recent efforts tackle this challenge by adopting an analysis-by-synthesis paradigm to learn 3D reconstruction with only 2D annotations. However, existing methods face limitations in both shape reconstruction and texture generation. This paper introduces an innovative Analysis-by-Synthesis Transformer that addresses these limitations in a unified framework by effectively modeling pixel-to-shape and pixel-to-texture relationships. It consists of a Shape Transformer and a Texture Transformer. The Shape Transformer employs learnable shape queries to fetch pixel-level features from the image, thereby achieving high-quality mesh reconstruction and recovering occluded vertices. The Texture Transformer employs texture queries for non-local gathering of texture information and thus eliminates the incorrect inductive bias. Experimental results on CUB-200-2011 and ShapeNet datasets demonstrate superior performance in shape reconstruction and texture generation compared to previous methods. The code is available at https://github.com/DianJJ/AST."

An accurate detection is not all you need to combat label noise in web-noisy datasets

展开摘要

"Training a classifier on web-crawled data demands learning algorithms that are robust to annotation errors and irrelevant examples. This paper builds upon the recent empirical observation that applying unsupervised contrastive learning to noisy, web-crawled datasets yields a feature representation under which the in-distribution (ID) and out-of-distribution (OOD) samples are linearly separable [?]. We show that direct estimation of the separating hyperplane can indeed offer an accurate detection of OOD samples, and yet, surprisingly, this detection does not translate into gains in classification accuracy. Digging deeper into this phenomenon, we discover that the near-perfect detection misses a type of clean examples that are valuable for supervised learning. These examples often represent visually simple images, which are relatively easy to identify as clean examples using standard loss- or distance-based methods despite being poorly separated from the OOD distribution using unsupervised learning. Because we further observe a low correlation with SOTA metrics, this urges us to propose a hybrid solution that alternates between noise detection using linear separation and a state-of-the-art (SOTA) small-loss approach. When combined with the SOTA algorithm PLS, we substantially improve SOTA results for real-world image classification in the presence of web noise https://github.com/PaulAlbert31/ LSA"

展开摘要

"A fundamental problem in the texturing of 3D meshes using pre-trained text-to-image models is to ensure multi-view consistency. State-of-the-art approaches typically use diffusion models to aggregate multi-view inputs, where common issues are the blurriness caused by the averaging operation in the aggregation step or inconsistencies in local features. This paper introduces an optimization framework that proceeds in four stages to achieve multi-view consistency. Specifically, the first stage generates an over-complete set of 2D textures from a predefined set of viewpoints using an MV-consistent diffusion process. The second stage selects a subset of views that are mutually consistent while covering the underlying 3D model. We show how to achieve this goal by solving semi-definite programs. The third stage performs non-rigid alignment to align the selected views across overlapping regions. The fourth stage solves an MRF problem to associate each mesh face with a selected view. In particular, the third and fourth stages are iterated, with the cuts obtained in the fourth stage encouraging non-rigid alignment in the third stage to focus on regions close to the cuts. Experimental results show that our approach significantly outperforms baseline approaches both qualitatively and quantitatively. Project page: https://aigc3d.github.io/ConsistenTex."

An Optimal Control View of LoRA and Binary Controller Design for Vision Transformers

Chi Zhang, Jingpu Cheng, Qianxiao Li

展开摘要

"While recent advancements in model fine-tuning predominantly emphasize the utilization of low-rank adaptation (LoRA), we propose an alternative approach centered on reducing the precision of adaptation matrices. In particular, we depart from the common viewpoint that considers adaptation matrices solely as weight differences, and reinterpret them as “control variables” to perturb pre-trained ViT systems. This new perspective enables the establishment of a control-oriented framework, facilitating the exploration of optimal controls guided by the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. Furthermore, we demonstrate that for bounded control sets such as hypercubes, the optimal controls often take on boundary values, leading naturally to a binary controller design. Theoretical analysis reveals that employing a binary control strategy achieves the same reachable state as its full-precision counterpart in the continuous idealisation of deep residual structures, a finding corroborated by later empirical investigations. Our studies further indicate that the controller’s rank holds greater significance than its precision. As such, opting for low-precision yet high-rank controls is demonstrated to obtain better performance for practical vision tasks."

An Information Theoretical View for Out-Of-Distribution Detection

展开摘要

"Detecting out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs are pivotal for real-world applications. However, due to the inaccessibility of OODs during training phase, applying supervised binary classification with in-distribution (ID) and OOD labels is not feasible. Therefore, previous works typically employ the proxy ID classification task to learn feature representation for OOD detection task. In this study, we delve into the relationship between the two tasks through the lens of Information Theory. Our analysis reveals that optimizing the classification objective could inevitably cause the over-confidence and undesired compression of OOD detection-relevant information. To address these two problems, we propose OOD Entropy Regularization (OER) to regularize the information captured in classification-oriented representation learning for detecting OOD samples. Both theoretical analyses and experimental results underscore the consistent improvement of OER on OOD detection."

展开摘要

"Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven defect inspection is pivotal in industrial manufacturing. However, existing inspection systems are typically designed for specific industrial products and struggle with diverse product portfolios and evolving processes. Although some previous studies attempt to address object dynamics by storing embeddings in the reserved memory bank, these methods suffer from memory capacity limitations and object distribution conflicts. To tackle these issues, we propose the Incremental Unified Framework (IUF), which integrates incremental learning into a unified reconstruction-based detection method, thus eliminating the need for feature storage in the memory. Based on IUF, we introduce Object-Aware Self-Attention (OASA) to delineate distinct semantic boundaries. We also integrate Semantic Compression Loss (SCL) to optimize non-primary semantic space, enhancing network adaptability for new objects. Additionally, we prioritize retaining the features of established objects during weight updates. Demonstrating prowess in both image and pixel-level defect inspection, our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance, supporting dynamic and scalable industrial inspections. Our code is released at https://github.com/jqtangust/IUF."

An Explainable Vision Question Answer Model via Diffusion Chain-of-Thought

Chunhao LU, Qiang Lu*, Jake Luo

展开摘要

"Explainable visual question-answering research focuses on generating explanations for answers. However, in complex VQA scenarios, there can be a significant semantic distance between the question and the answer. This means that generating explanations solely for the answer can lead to a semantic discrepancy between the content of the explanation and the question-answering content. To address this, we propose a step-by-step reasoning approach to reduce such semantic discrepancies. Additionally, the task of explaining VQA should include generating explanations for the reasoning steps to obtain explanations for the final answer. We introduce a diffusion chain-of-thought model to implement this step-by-step reasoning and the explanation process. The model consists of two processes: the external diffusion and the internal diffusion. The external diffusion process generates explanations for each reasoning step, while the internal diffusion process describes the probability of the question transitioning to each step of the explanation. Through experiments on eight sub-tasks in the ScienceQA dataset, we demonstrate that our diffusion chain-of-thought model outperforms GPT-3.5 in terms of the answer accuracy and the explanation ability while only using 1% of GPT-3.5’s parameters. Furthermore, the model approaches GPT-4, Llama, and so on in eight sub-tasks."

展开摘要

"One critical prerequisite for faithful text-to-image generation is the accurate understanding of text inputs. Existing methods leverage the text encoder of the CLIP model to represent input prompts. However, the pre-trained CLIP model can merely encode English with a maximum token length of 77. Moreover, the model capacity of the text encoder from CLIP is relatively limited compared to Large Language Models (LLMs), which offer multilingual input, accommodate longer context, and achieve superior text representation. In this paper, we investigate LLMs as the text encoder to improve the language understanding in text-to-image generation. Unfortunately, training text-to-image generative model with LLMs from scratch demands significant computational resources and data. To this end, we introduce a three-stage training pipeline, OmniDiffusion, that effectively and efficiently integrates the existing text-to-image model with LLMs. Specifically, we propose a lightweight adapter that enables fast training of the text-to-image model using the textual representations from LLMs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model supports not only multilingual but also longer input context with superior image generation quality. An Efficient and Effective Transformer Decoder-Based Framework for Multi-Task Visual Grounding

Wei Chen, Long Chen, Yu Wu

展开摘要

"Most advanced visual grounding methods rely on Transformers for visual-linguistic feature fusion. However, these Transformer-based approaches encounter a significant drawback: the computational costs escalate quadratically due to the self-attention mechanism in the Transformer Encoder, particularly when dealing with high-resolution images or long context sentences. This quadratic increase in computational burden restricts the applicability of visual grounding to more intricate scenes, such as conversation-based reasoning segmentation, which involves lengthy language expressions. In this paper, we propose an efficient and effective multi-task visual grounding (EEVG) framework based on Transformer Decoder to address this issue, which reduces the cost in both language and visual aspects. In the language aspect, we employ the Transformer Decoder to fuse visual and linguistic features, where linguistic features are input as memory and visual features as queries. This allows fusion to scale linearly with language expression length. In the visual aspect, we introduce a parameter-free approach to reduce computation by eliminating background visual tokens based on attention scores. We then design a light mask head to directly predict segmentation masks from the remaining sparse feature maps. Extensive results and ablation studies on benchmarks demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our approach. Code is available in https://github.com/chenwei746/EEVG."

展开摘要

"Robotic grasping in clutters is a fundamental task in robotic manipulation. In this work, we propose an economic framework for 6-DoF grasp detection, aiming to economize the resource cost in training and meanwhile maintain effective grasp performance. To begin with, we discover that the dense supervision is the bottleneck of current SOTA methods that severely encumbers the entire training overload, meanwhile making the training difficult to converge. To solve the above problem, we first propose an economic supervision paradigm for efficient and effective grasping. This paradigm includes a well-designed supervision selection strategy, selecting key labels basically without ambiguity, and an economic pipeline to enable the training after selection. Furthermore, benefit from the economic supervision, we can focus on a specific grasp, and thus we devise a focal representation module, which comprises an interactive grasp head and a composite score estimation to generate the specific grasp more accurately. Combining all together, the EconomicGrasp framework is proposed. Our extensive experiments show that EconomicGrasp surpasses the SOTA grasp method by about 3AP on average, and with extremely low resource cost, for about 1/4 training time cost, 1/8 memory cost and 1/30 storage cost. Our code is available at https://github.com/iSEE-Laboratory/ EconomicGrasp."

An Adaptive Screen-Space Meshing Approach for Normal Integration

Moritz Heep, Eduard Zell

展开摘要

"Reconstructing surfaces from normals is a key component of photometric stereo. This work introduces an adaptive surface triangulation in the image domain and afterwards performs the normal integration on a triangle mesh. Our key insight is that surface curvature can be computed from normals. Based on the curvature, we identify flat areas and aggregate pixels into triangles. The approximation quality is controlled by a single user parameter facilitating a seamless generation of low- to high-resolution meshes. Compared to pixel grids, our triangle meshes adapt locally to surface details and allow for a sparser representation. Our new mesh-based formulation of the normal integration problem is strictly derived from discrete differential geometry and leads to well-conditioned linear systems. Results on real and synthetic data show that 10 to 100 times less vertices are required than pixels. Experiments suggest that this sparsity translates into a sublinear runtime in the number of pixels. For 64 MP normal maps, our meshing-first approach generates and integrates meshes in minutes while pixel-based approaches require hours just for the integration."

Alternate Diverse Teaching for Semi-supervised Medical Image Segmentation

展开摘要

"Semi-supervised medical image segmentation has shown promise in training models with limited labeled data. However, current dominant teacher-student based approaches can suffer from the confirmation bias. To address this challenge, we propose AD-MT, an alternate diverse teaching approach in a teacher-student framework. It involves a single student model and two non-trainable teacher models that are momentum-updated periodically and randomly in an alternate fashion. To mitigate the confirmation bias via the diverse supervision, the core of AD-MT lies in two proposed modules: the Random Periodic Alternate (RPA) Updating Module and the Conflict-Combating Module (CCM). The RPA schedules an alternating diverse updating process with complementary unlabeled data batches, distinct data augmentation, and random switching periods to encourage diverse reasoning from different teaching perspectives. The CCM employs an entropy-based ensembling strategy to encourage the model to learn from both the consistent and conflicting predictions between the teachers. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of AD-MT on the 2D and 3D medical segmentation benchmarks across various semi-supervised settings."

This paper addresses two key challenges in this domain: Input bias and intensity saturation. A novel neutralization scheme is first proposed to counter input bias, yielding impressive results in generating neutral talking faces from emotionally expressive ones. Furthermore, 2D continuous emotion label-based regression learning effectively generates varying emotional intensities on a frame basis. Alignist: CAD-Informed Orientation Distribution Estimation by Fusing Shape and Correspondences

展开摘要

"Object pose distribution estimation is crucial in robotics for better path planning and handling of symmetric objects. Recent distribution estimation approaches employ contrastive learning-based approaches by maximizing the likelihood of a single pose estimate in the absence of a CAD model. We propose a pose distribution estimation method leveraging symmetry respecting correspondence distributions and shape information obtained using a CAD model. Contrastive learning-based approaches require an exhaustive amount of training images from different viewpoints to learn the distribution properly, which is not possible in realistic scenarios. Instead, we propose a pipeline that can leverage correspondence distributions and shape information from the CAD model, which are later used to learn pose distributions. Besides, having access to pose distribution based on correspondences before learning pose distributions conditioned on images, can help formulate the loss between distributions. The prior knowledge of distribution also helps the network to focus on getting sharper modes instead. With the CAD prior, our approach converges much faster and learns distribution better by focusing on learning sharper distribution near all the valid modes, unlike contrastive approaches, which focus on a single mode at a time. We achieve benchmark results on SYMSOL-I and T-Less datasets."

Aligning Neuronal Coding of Dynamic Visual Scenes with Foundation Vision Models

展开摘要

"Our brains represent the ever-changing environment with neurons in a highly dynamic fashion. The temporal features of visual pixels in dynamic natural scenes are entrapped in the neuronal responses of the retina. It is crucial to establish the intrinsic temporal relationship between visual pixels and neuronal responses. Recent foundation vision models have paved an advanced way of understanding image pixels. Yet, neuronal coding in the brain largely lacks a deep understanding of its alignment with pixels. Most previous studies employ static images or artificial videos derived from static images for emulating more real and complicated stimuli. Despite these simple scenarios effectively help to separate key factors influencing visual coding, complex temporal relationships receive no consideration. To decompose the temporal features of visual coding in natural scenes, here we propose Vi-ST, a spatiotemporal convolutional neural network fed with a self-supervised Vision Transformer (ViT) prior, aimed at unraveling the temporal-based encoding patterns of retinal neuronal populations. The model demonstrates robust predictive performance in generalization tests. Furthermore, through detailed ablation experiments, we demonstrate the significance of each temporal module. Furthermore, we introduce a visual coding evaluation metric designed to integrate temporal considerations and compare the impact of different numbers of neuronal populations on complementary coding. In conclusion, our proposed Vi-ST demonstrates a novel modeling framework for neuronal coding of dynamic visual scenes in the brain, effectively aligning our brain representation of video with neuronal activity. The code is available at github.com/wurining/Vi-ST."
