LEGO: Learning EGOcentric Action Frame Generation via Visual Instruction Tuning

Bolin Lai, Xiaoliang Dai, Lawrence Chen, Guan Pang, James M. Rehg, Miao Liu

Expand abstract

"Generating instructional images of human daily actions from an egocentric viewpoint serves as a key step towards efficient skill transfer. In this paper, we introduce a novel problem – egocentric action frame generation. The goal is to synthesize an image depicting an action in the user’s context (, action frame) by conditioning on a user prompt and an input egocentric image. Notably, existing egocentric action datasets lack the detailed annotations that describe the execution of actions. Additionally, existing diffusion-based image manipulation models are sub-optimal in controlling the state transition of an action in egocentric image pixel space because of the domain gap. To this end, we propose to Learn EGOcentric (LEGO) action frame generation via visual instruction tuning. First, we introduce a prompt enhancement scheme to generate enriched action descriptions from a visual large language model (VLLM) by visual instruction tuning. Then we propose a novel method to leverage image and text embeddings from the VLLM as additional conditioning to improve the performance of a diffusion model. We validate our model on two egocentric datasets – Ego4D and Epic-Kitchens. Our experiments show substantial improvement over prior image manipulation models in both quantitative and qualitative evaluation. We also conduct detailed ablation studies and analysis to provide insights in our method. More details of the dataset and code are available on the website (https://bolinlai.github.io/Lego_EgoActGen/)."

Expand abstract

"Recent advancements in diffusion models have introduced fast sampling methods that can effectively produce high-quality images in just one or a few denoising steps. Interestingly, when these are distilled from existing diffusion models, they often maintain alignment with the original model, retaining similar outputs for similar prompts and seeds. These properties present opportunities to leverage fast sampling methods as a shortcut-mechanism, using them to create a preview of denoised outputs through which we can backpropagate image-space losses. In this work, we explore the potential of using such shortcut-mechanisms to guide the personalization of text-to-image models to specific facial identities. We focus on encoder-based personalization approaches, and demonstrate that by augmenting their training with a lookahead identity loss, we can achieve higher identity fidelity, without sacrificing layout diversity or prompt alignment. Expand abstract

"Recent text-to-3D generation approaches produce impressive 3D results but require time-consuming optimization that can take up to an hour per prompt. Amortized methods like ATT3D optimize multiple prompts simultaneously to improve efficiency, enabling fast text-to-3D synthesis. However, they cannot capture high-frequency geometry and texture details and struggle to scale to large prompt sets, so they generalize poorly. We introduce , addressing these limitations to achieve fast, high-quality generation on a significantly larger prompt set. Key to our method is 1) building a scalable architecture and 2) leveraging 3D data during optimization through 3D-aware diffusion priors, shape regularization, and model initialization to achieve robustness to diverse and complex training prompts. amortizes both neural field and textured surface generation to produce highly detailed textured meshes in a single forward pass. generates 3D objects in , and can be further enhanced with fast test-time optimization."

LASS3D: Language-Assisted Semi-Supervised 3D Semantic Segmentation with Progressive Unreliable Data Exploitation

Jianan Li, Qiulei Dong

Expand abstract

"Precisely annotating large-scale 3D datasets for point cloud segmentation is laborious. To alleviate the annotation burden, several semi-supervised 3D segmentation methods have been proposed in literature. However, two issues remain to be tackled: 1) The utilization of large language-vision models (LVM) in semi-supervised 3D semantic segmentation remains under-explored. 2) The unlabeled points with low-confidence predictions are directly discarded by existing methods. Taking these two issues into consideration, we propose a language-assisted semi-supervised 3D semantic segmentation method named LASS3D, which is built upon the commonly used MeanTeacher framework. In LASS3D, we use two off-the-shelf LVM to generate multi-level captions and leverage the images as the bridge to connect the text data and point clouds. Then, a semantic-aware adaptive fusion module is explored in the student branch, where the semantic information encoded in the embeddings of multi-level captions is injected into 3D features by adaptive fusion and then the semantic information in the text-enhanced 3D features is transferred to the teacher branch by knowledge distillation. In addition, a progressive exploitation strategy is explored for the unreliable points in the teacher branch, which can effectively exploit the information encapsulated in unreliable points via negative learning. Experimental results on both outdoor and indoor datasets demonstrate that LASS3D outperforms the comparative methods in most cases."

LAPT: Label-driven Automated Prompt Tuning for OOD Detection with Vision-Language Models

Yabin ZHANG, Wenjie Zhu, Chenhang HE, Lei Zhang

Expand abstract

"Out-of-distribution (OOD) detection is crucial for model reliability, as it identifies samples from unknown classes and reduces errors due to unexpected inputs. Vision-Language Models (VLMs) such as CLIP are emerging as powerful tools for OOD detection by integrating multi-modal information. However, the practical application of such systems is challenged by manual prompt engineering, which demands domain expertise and is sensitive to linguistic nuances. In this paper, we introduce Label-driven Automated Prompt Tuning (LAPT), a novel approach to OOD detection that reduces the need for manual prompt engineering. We develop distribution-aware prompts with in-distribution (ID) class names and negative labels mined automatically. Training samples linked to these class labels are collected autonomously via image synthesis and retrieval methods, allowing for prompt learning without manual effort. We utilize a simple cross-entropy loss for prompt optimization, with cross-modal and cross-distribution mixing strategies to reduce image noise and explore the intermediate space between distributions, respectively. The LAPT framework operates autonomously, requiring only ID class names as input and eliminating the need for manual intervention. With extensive experiments, LAPT consistently outperforms manually crafted prompts, setting a new standard for OOD detection. Moreover, LAPT not only enhances the distinction between ID and OOD samples, but also improves the ID classification accuracy and strengthens the generalization robustness to covariate shifts, resulting in outstanding performance in challenging full-spectrum OOD detection tasks. Codes are available at https://github.com/YBZh/LAPT."

Expand abstract

"In this paper, we introduce L-DiffER, a language-based diffusion model designed for the ill-posed single image reflection removal task. Although having shown impressive performance for image generation, existing language-based diffusion models struggle with precise control and faithfulness in image restoration. To overcome these limitations, we propose an iterative condition refinement strategy to resolve the problem of inaccurate control conditions. A multi-condition constraint mechanism is employed to ensure the recovery faithfulness of image color and structure while retaining the generation capability to handle low-transmitted reflections. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method through extensive experiments, showcasing both quantitative and qualitative improvements over existing methods."

Knowledge Transfer with Simulated Inter-Image Erasing for Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation

Tao Chen, Xiruo Jiang, Gensheng Pei, Zeren Sun, Yucheng Wang, Yazhou Yao

Expand abstract

"Though adversarial erasing has prevailed in weakly supervised semantic segmentation to help activate integral object regions, existing approaches still suffer from the dilemma of under-activation and over-expansion due to the difficulty in determining when to stop erasing. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge Transfer with Simulated Inter-Image Erasing (KTSE) approach for weakly supervised semantic segmentation to alleviate the above problem. In contrast to existing erasing-based methods that remove the discriminative part for more object discovery, we propose a simulated inter-image erasing scenario to weaken the original activation by introducing extra object information. Then, object knowledge is transferred from the anchor image to the consequent less activated localization map to strengthen network localization ability. Considering the adopted bidirectional alignment will also weaken the anchor image activation if appropriate constraints are missing, we propose a self-supervised regularization module to maintain the reliable activation in discriminative regions and improve the inter-class object boundary recognition for complex images with multiple categories of objects. In addition, we resort to intra-image erasing and propose a multi-granularity alignment module to gently enlarge the object activation to boost the object knowledge transfer. Extensive experiments and ablation studies on PASCAL VOC 2012 and COCO datasets demonstrate the superiority of our proposed approach. Codes and models are available at https://nust-machine-intelligence-laboratory. github.io/project-KTSE."

Kinetic Typography Diffusion Model

Seonmi Park, Inhwan Bae, Seunghyun Shin, Hae-Gon Jeon

Expand abstract

"This paper introduces a method for realistic kinetic typography that generates user-preferred animatable “text content”. We draw on recent advances in guided video diffusion models to achieve visually-pleasing text appearances. To do this, we first construct a kinetic typography dataset, comprising about 600K videos. Our dataset is made from a variety of combinations in 584 templates designed by professional motion graphics designers and involves changing each letter’s position, glyph, and size (, flying, glitches, chromatic aberration, reflecting effects, etc.). Next, we propose a video diffusion model for kinetic typography. For this, there are three requirements: aesthetic appearances, motion effects, and readable letters. This paper identifies the requirements. For this, we present static and dynamic captions used as spatial and temporal guidance of a video diffusion model, respectively. The static caption describes the overall appearance of the video, such as colors, texture and glyph which represent a shape of each letter. The dynamic caption accounts for the movements of letters and backgrounds. We add one more guidance with zero convolution to determine which text content should be visible in the video. We apply the zero convolution to the text content, and impose it on the diffusion model. Lastly, our glyph loss, only minimizing a difference between the predicted word and its ground-truth, is proposed to make the prediction letters readable. Experiments show that our model generates kinetic typography videos with legible and artistic letter motions based on text prompts."

KeypointDETR: An End-to-End 3D Keypoint Detector

Hairong Jin, Yuefan Shen, Jianwen Lou, Kun Zhou, Youyi Zheng

Expand abstract

"3D keypoint detection plays a pivotal role in 3D shape analysis. The majority of prevalent methods depend on producing a shared heatmap. This approach necessitates subsequent post-processing techniques such as clustering or non-maximum suppression (NMS) to pinpoint keypoints within high-confidence regions, resulting in performance inefficiencies. To address this issue, we introduce KeypointDETR, an end-to-end 3D keypoint detection framework. KeypointDETR is predominantly trained with a bipartite matching loss, which compels the network to forecast sets of heatmaps and probabilities for potential keypoints. Each heatmap highlights one keypoint’s location, and the associated probability indicates not only the presence of that specific keypoint but also its semantic consistency. Together with the bipartite matching loss, we utilize a transformer-based network architecture, which incorporates both point-wise and query-wise self-attention within the encoder and decoder, respectively. The point-wise encoder leverages the self-attention mechanism on a dynamic graph derived from the local feature space of each point, resulting in the generation of heatmap features. As a key part of our framework, the query-wise decoder facilitates inter-query information exchange. It captures the underlying connections among keypoints’ heatmaps, positions, and semantic attributes via the cross-attention mechanism, enabling the prediction of heatmaps and probabilities. Extensive experiments conducted on the KeypointNet dataset reveal that KeypointDETR outperforms competitive baselines, demonstrating superior performance in keypoint saliency and correspondence estimation tasks. Keypoint Promptable Re-Identification

Vladimir Somers*, Alexandre Alahi, Christophe De Vleeschouwer

Expand abstract

"Occluded Person Re-Identification (ReID) is a metric learning task that involves matching occluded individuals based on their appearance. While many studies have tackled occlusions caused by objects, multi-person occlusions remain less explored. In this work, we identify and address a critical challenge overlooked by previous occluded methods: the Multi-Person Ambiguity (MPA) arising when multiple individuals are visible in the same bounding box, making it impossible to determine the intended ReID target among the candidates. Inspired by recent work on prompting in vision, we introduce Keypoint Promptable ReID (KPR), a novel formulation of the ReID problem that explicitly complements the input bounding box with a set of semantic keypoints indicating the intended target. Since promptable re-identification is an unexplored paradigm, existing datasets lack the pixel-level annotations necessary for prompting. To bridge this gap and foster further research on this topic, we introduce , a novel dataset with keypoints labels, that features strong inter-person occlusions. Furthermore, we release custom keypoint labels for four popular ReID benchmarks. Experiments on person retrieval, but also on pose tracking, demonstrate that our method systematically surpasses previous state-of-the-art approaches on various occluded scenarios. Our code, dataset and annotations are available at https://github. com/VlSomers/keypoint_promptable_reidentification."

Kernel Diffusion: An Alternate Approach to Blind Deconvolution

Yash Sanghvi, Yiheng Chi, Stanley Chan

Expand abstract

"Blind deconvolution problems are severely ill-posed because neither the underlying signal nor the forward operator are not known exactly. Conventionally, these problems are solved by alternating between estimation of the image and kernel while keeping the other fixed. In this paper, we show that this framework is flawed because of its tendency to get trapped in local minima and, instead, suggest the use of a kernel estimation strategy with a non-blind solver. This framework is employed by a diffusion method which is trained to sample the blur kernel from the conditional distribution with guidance from a pre-trained non-blind solver. The proposed diffusion method leads to state-of-the-art results on both synthetic and real blur datasets."

Kalman-Inspired Feature Propagation for Video Face Super-Resolution

Ruicheng Feng, Chongyi Li, Chen Change Loy

Expand abstract

"Despite the promising progress of face image super-resolution, video face super-resolution remains relatively under-explored. Existing approaches either adapt general video super-resolution networks to face datasets or apply established face image super-resolution models independently on individual video frames. These paradigms encounter challenges either in reconstructing facial details or maintaining temporal consistency. To address these issues, we introduce a novel framework called Kalman-inspired Feature Propagation (), designed to maintain a stable face prior over time. The Kalman filtering principles offer our method a recurrent ability to use the information from previously restored frames to guide and regulate the restoration process of the current frame. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in capturing facial details consistently across video frames. KMTalk: Speech-Driven 3D Facial Animation with Key Motion Embedding

Expand abstract

"We present a novel approach for synthesizing 3D facial motions from audio sequences using key motion embeddings. Despite recent advancements in data-driven techniques, accurately mapping between audio signals and 3D facial meshes remains challenging. Direct regression of the entire sequence often leads to over-smoothed results due to the ill-posed nature of the problem. To this end, we propose a progressive learning mechanism that generates 3D facial animations by introducing key motion capture to decrease cross-modal mapping uncertainty and learning complexity. Concretely, our method integrates linguistic and data-driven priors through two modules: the linguistic-based key motion acquisition and the cross-modal motion completion. The former identifies key motions and learns the associated 3D facial expressions, ensuring accurate lip-speech synchronization. The latter extends key motions into a full sequence of 3D talking faces guided by audio features, improving temporal coherence and audio-visual consistency. Extensive experimental comparisons against existing state-of-the-art methods demonstrate the superiority of our approach in generating more vivid and consistent talking face animations. Consistent enhancements in results through the integration of our proposed learning scheme with existing methods underscore the efficacy of our approach."

Expand abstract

"We introduce KFD-NeRF, a novel dynamic neural radiance field integrated with an efficient and high-quality motion reconstruction framework based on Kalman filtering. Our key idea is to model the dynamic radiance field as a dynamic system whose temporally varying states are estimated based on two sources of knowledge: observations and predictions. We introduce a novel plug-in Kalman filter guided deformation field that enables accurate deformation estimation from scene observations and predictions. We use a shallow Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) for observations and model the motion as locally linear to calculate predictions with motion equations. To further enhance the performance of the observation MLP, we introduce regularization in the canonical space to facilitate the network’s ability to learn warping for different frames. Additionally, we employ an efficient tri-plane representation for encoding the canonical space, which has been experimentally demonstrated to converge quickly with high quality. This enables us to use a shallower observation MLP, consisting of just two layers in our implementation. We conduct experiments on synthetic and real data and compare with past dynamic NeRF methods. Our KFD-NeRF demonstrates similar or even superior rendering performance within comparable computational time and achieves state-of-the-art view synthesis performance with thorough training. KDProR: A Knowledge-Decoupling Probabilistic Framework for Video-Text Retrieval

Xianwei Zhuang, Hongxiang Li, Xuxin Cheng, Zhihong Zhu, Yuxin Xie, Yuexian Zou

Expand abstract

"Existing video-text retrieval methods predominantly focus on designing diverse cross-modal interaction mechanisms between captions and videos. However, those approaches diverge from human learning paradigms, where humans possess the capability to seek and associate knowledge from an open set, rather than rote memorizing all text-video instances. Motivated by this, we attempt to decouple knowledge from retrieval models through multi-grained knowledge stores and identify two significant benefits of our knowledge-decoupling strategy: (1) it ensures a harmonious balance between knowledge memorization and retrieval optimization, thereby improving retrieval performance; and (2) it can promote incorporating diverse open-world knowledge to augment video-text retrieval. To efficiently integrate information from knowledge stores, we further introduce a novel retrieval framework termed KDProR, which utilizes our proposed Expectation-Knowledge-Maximization (EKM) algorithm for optimization. Specifically, in E-step, KDProR obtains relevant contextual semantics from knowledge stores and achieves efficient knowledge injection through interpolation and alignment correction. During the K-step, KDProR calculates the knowledge KNN distribution by indexing the top-K acquired knowledge to refine the retrieval distribution, and in M-step, KDProR optimizes the retrieval model by maximizing the likelihood of the objective. Extensive experiments on various benchmarks prove that KDProR significantly outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods across all metrics. Remarkably, KDProR can uniformly and efficiently incorporate diverse open-world knowledge and is compatible with different interaction mechanisms and architectures."

Just a Hint: Point-Supervised Camouflaged Object Detection

Huafeng Chen, Dian Shao, Guangqian Guo, Shan Gao

Expand abstract

"Camouflaged Object Detection (COD) demands models to expeditiously and accurately distinguish objects which conceal themselves seamlessly in the environment. Owing to the subtle differences and ambiguous boundaries, COD is not only a remarkably challenging task for models but also for human annotators, requiring huge efforts to provide pixel-wise annotations. To alleviate the heavy annotation burden, we propose to fulfill this task with the help of only one point supervision. Specifically, by swiftly clicking on each object, we first adaptively expand the original point-based annotation to a reasonable hint area. Then, to avoid partial localization around discriminative parts, we propose an attention regulator to scatter model attention to the whole object through partially masking labeled regions. Moreover, to solve the unstable feature representation of camouflaged objects under only point-based annotation, we perform unsupervised contrastive learning based on differently augmented image pairs (e.g. changing color or doing translation). On three mainstream COD benchmarks, experimental results show that our model outperforms several weakly-supervised methods by a large margin across various metrics."

JointDreamer: Ensuring Geometry Consistency and Text Congruence in Text-to-3D Generation via Joint Score Distillation

Chenhan Jiang, Yihan Zeng, Tianyang Hu, Songcen Xu, Wei Zhang, Hang Xu, Dit-Yan Yeung

Expand abstract

"Score Distillation Sampling (SDS) by well-trained 2D diffusion models has shown great promise in text-to-3D generation. However, this paradigm distills view-agnostic 2D image distributions into the rendering distribution of 3D representation for each view independently, overlooking the coherence across views and yielding 3D inconsistency in generations. In this work, we propose Joint Score Distillation (JSD), a new paradigm that ensures coherent 3D generations. Specifically, we model the joint image distribution, which introduces an energy function to capture the coherence among denoised images from the diffusion model. We then derive the joint score distillation on multiple rendered views of the 3D representation, as opposed to a single view in SDS. In addition, we instantiate three universal view-aware models as energy functions, demonstrating compatibility with JSD. Empirically, JSD significantly mitigates the 3D inconsistency problem in SDS, while maintaining text congruence. Moreover, we introduce the Geometry Fading scheme and Classifier-Free Guidance (CFG) Switching strategy to enhance generative details. Our framework, JointDreamer, establishes a new benchmark in text-to-3D generation, achieving outstanding results with an 88.5% CLIP R-Precision and 27.7% CLIP Score. These metrics demonstrate exceptional text congruence, as well as remarkable geometric consistency and texture fidelity."

"The integration of miniaturized spectrometers into mobile devices offers new avenues for image quality enhancement and facilitates novel downstream tasks. However, the broader application of spectral sensors in mobile photography is hindered by the inherent complexity of spectral images and the constraints of spectral imaging capabilities. To overcome these challenges, we propose a joint RGB-Spectral decomposition model guided enhancement framework, which consists of two steps: joint decomposition and prior-guided enhancement. Firstly, we leverage the complementarity between RGB and Low-resolution Multi-Spectral Images (Lr-MSI) to predict shading, reflectance, and material semantic priors. Subsequently, these priors are seamlessly integrated into the established HDRNet to promote dynamic range enhancement, color mapping, and grid expert learning, respectively. Additionally, we construct a high-quality Mobile-Spec dataset to support our research, and our experiments validate the effectiveness of Lr-MSI in the tone enhancement task. Based on this analysis, we propose two generalizable methods to bridge the gap between TBD and TBA methods: track sampling augmentation and confidence-based query propagation. JDT3D is trained and evaluated on the nuScenes dataset, achieving 0.574 on the AMOTA metric on the nuScenes test set, outperforming all existing LiDAR-based TBA approaches by over 6%.
