h-Edit: Effective and Flexible Diffusion-Based Editing via Doob's h-Transform

Toan Nguyen, Kien Do, Duc Kieu, Thin Nguyen

We introduce a theoretical framework for diffusion-based image editing by formulating it as a reverse-time bridge modeling problem. This approach modifies the backward process of a pretrained diffusion model to construct a bridge that converges to an implicit distribution associated with the editing target at time 0. Building on this framework, we propose h-Edit, a novel editing method that utilizes Doob's h-transform and Langevin Monte Carlo to decompose the update of an intermediate edited sample into two components: a "reconstruction" term and an "editing" term. This decomposition provides flexibility, allowing the reconstruction term to be computed via existing inversion techniques and enabling the combination of multiple editing terms to handle complex editing tasks. To our knowledge, h-Edit is the first training-free method capable of performing simultaneous text-guided and reward-model-based editing. Extensive experiments, both quantitative and qualitative, show that h-Edit outperforms state-of-the-art baselines in terms of editing effectiveness and faithfulness.

Your ViT is Secretly an Image Segmentation Model

Tommie Kerssies, Niccolò Cavagnero, Alexander Hermans, Narges Norouzi, Giuseppe Averta, Bastian Leibe, Gijs Dubbelman, Daan de Geus

Vision Transformers (ViTs) have shown remarkable performance and scalability across various computer vision tasks. To apply single-scale ViTs to image segmentation, existing methods adopt a convolutional adapter to generate multi-scale features, a pixel decoder to fuse these features, and a Transformer decoder that uses the fused features to make predictions. In this paper, we show that the inductive biases introduced by these task-specific components can instead be learned by the ViT itself, given sufficiently large models and extensive pre-training. Based on these findings, we introduce the Encoder-only Mask Transformer (EoMT), which repurposes the plain ViT architecture to conduct image segmentation. With large-scale models and pre-training, EoMT obtains a segmentation accuracy similar to state-of-the-art models that use task-specific components. At the same time, EoMT is significantly faster than these methods due to its architectural simplicity, e.g., up to 4x faster with ViT-L. Across a range of model sizes, EoMT demonstrates an optimal balance between segmentation accuracy and prediction speed, suggesting that compute resources are better spent on scaling the ViT itself rather than adding architectural complexity. Visual Representation Learning through Causal Intervention for Controllable Image Editing

Shanshan Huang, Haoxuan Li, Chunyuan Zheng, Lei Wang, Guorui Liao, Zhili Gong, Huayi Yang, Li Liu

A key challenge for controllable image editing is that visual attributes with semantic meanings are not always independent, resulting in spurious correlations in model training. However, most existing methods ignore such issues, leading to biased causal visual representation learning and unintended changes to unrelated regions or attributes in the edited images. To bridge this gap, we propose a diffusion-based causal visual representation learning framework called CIDiffuser to capture causal representations of visual attributes based on structural causal models to address the spurious correlation. Specifically, we first decompose the image representation into a high-level semantic representation for core attributes of the image and a low-level stochastic representation for other random or less structured aspects, with the former extracted by a semantic encoder and the latter derived via a stochastic encoder. We then introduce a causal effect learning module to capture the direct causal effect, that is, the difference of potential outcomes before and after intervening on the visual attributes. In addition, a diffusion-based learning strategy is designed to optimize the representation learning process. Empirical evaluations on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, enabling highly controllable image editing by modifying learned visual representations.

Visual Prompting for One-shot Controllable Video Editing without Inversion

Zhengbo Zhang, Yuxi Zhou, Duo Peng, Joo-Hwee Lim, Zhigang Tu, De Wen Soh, Lin Geng Foo

One-shot controllable video editing (OCVE) is an important yet challenging task, aiming to propagate user edits that are made---using any image editing tool---on the first frame of a video to all subsequent frames, while ensuring content consistency between edited frames and source frames. To achieve this, prior methods employ DDIM inversion to transform source frames into latent noise, which is then fed into a pre-trained diffusion model, conditioned on the user-edited first frame, to generate the edited video. However, the DDIM inversion process accumulates errors, which hinder the latent noise from accurately reconstructing the source frames, ultimately compromising content consistency in the generated edited frames. To overcome it, our method eliminates the need for DDIM inversion by performing OCVE through a novel perspective based on visual prompting. Furthermore, inspired by consistency models that can perform multi-step consistency sampling to generate a sequence of content-consistent images, we propose a content consistency sampling (CCS) to ensure content consistency between the generated edited frames and the source frames. Moreover, we introduce a temporal-content consistency sampling (TCS) based on Stein Variational Gradient Descent to ensure temporal consistency across the edited frames. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of our approach.

VideoHandles: Editing 3D Object Compositions in Videos Using Video Generative Priors

Juil Koo, Paul Guerrero, Chun-Hao P. Huang, Duygu Ceylan, Minhyuk Sung

Generative methods for image and video editing use generative models as priors to perform edits despite incomplete information, such as changing the composition of 3D objects shown in a single image. Recent methods have shown promising composition editing results in the image setting, but in the video setting, editing methods have focused on editing object appearance, object motion, or camera motion, and as a result, methods to edit object composition in videos are still missing. We propose VideoHandles as a method for editing 3D object compositions in videos of static scenes with camera motion. Our approach allows editing the 3D position of a 3D object across all frames of a video in a temporally consistent manner. This is achieved by lifting intermediate features of a generative model to a 3D reconstruction that is shared between all frames, editing the reconstruction, and projecting the features on the edited reconstruction back to each frame. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first generative approach to edit object compositions in videos. Our approach is simple and training-free, while outperforming state-of-the-art image editing baselines.

VideoDirector: Precise Video Editing via Text-to-Video Models

Yukun Wang, Longguang Wang, Zhiyuan Ma, Qibin Hu, Kai Xu, Yulan Guo

Despite the typical inversion-then-editing paradigm using text-to-image (T2I) models has demonstrated promising results, directly extending it to text-to-video (T2V) models still suffers severe artifacts such as color flickering and content distortion. Consequently, current video editing methods primarily rely on T2I models, which inherently lack temporal-coherence generative ability, often resulting in inferior editing results. In this paper, we attribute the failure of the typical editing paradigm to: 1) Tightly Spatial-temporal Coupling. The vanilla pivotal-based inversion strategy struggles to disentangle spatial-temporal information in the video diffusion model; 2) Complicated Spatial-temporal Layout. The vanilla cross-attention control strategy is deficient in preserving the unedited content. To address these limitations, we propose a spatial-temporal decoupled guidance (STDG) and multi-frame null-text optimization strategy to provide pivotal temporal cues for more precise pivotal inversion. Furthermore, we introduce a self-attention control strategy to maintain higher fidelity for precise partial content editing. Experimental results demonstrate that our method (termed VideoDirector) effectively harnesses the powerful temporal generation capabilities of T2V models, producing edited videos with state-of-the-art performance in accuracy, motion smoothness, realism, and fidelity to unedited content.

Unveil Inversion and Invariance in Flow Transformer for Versatile Image Editing

Pengcheng Xu, Boyuan Jiang, Xiaobin Hu, Donghao Luo, Qingdong He, Jiangning Zhang, Chengjie Wang, Yunsheng Wu, Charles Ling, Boyu Wang

Leveraging the large generative prior of the flow transformer for tuning-free image editing requires authentic inversion to project the image into the model's domain and a flexible invariance control mechanism to preserve non-target contents. However, the prevailing diffusion inversion performs deficiently in flow-based models, and the invariance control cannot reconcile diverse rigid and non-rigid editing tasks. To address these, we systematically analyze the inversion and invariance control based on the flow transformer. Specifically, we unveil that the Euler inversion shares a similar structure to DDIM yet is more susceptible to the approximation error. Thus, we propose a two-stage inversion to first refine the velocity estimation and then compensate for the leftover error, which pivots closely to the model prior and benefits editing. Meanwhile, we propose the invariance control that manipulates the text features within the adaptive layer normalization, connecting the changes in the text prompt to image semantics. This mechanism can simultaneously preserve the non-target contents while allowing rigid and non-rigid manipulation, enabling a wide range of editing types. Experiments on various scenarios demonstrate that our framework achieves flexible and accurate editing, unlocking the potential of the flow transformer for versatile image editing.

Unity in Diversity: Video Editing via Gradient-Latent Purification

Junyu Gao, Kunlin Yang, Xuan Yao, Yufan Hu

Recently, text-driven video editing methods that optimize target latent representations have garnered significant attention and demonstrated promising results. However, these methods rely on self-supervised objectives to compute the gradients needed for updating latent representations, which inevitably introduces gradient noise, compromising content generation quality. Additionally, it is challenging to determine the optimal stopping point for the editing process, making it difficult to achieve an optimal solution for the latent representation. To address these issues, we propose a unified gradient-latent purification framework that collects gradient and latent information across different stages to identify effective and concordant update directions. We design a local coordinate system construction method based on feature decomposition, enabling short-term gradients and final-stage latents to be reprojected onto new axes. Then, we employ tailored coefficient regularization terms to effectively aggregate the decomposed information. Additionally, a temporal smoothing axis extension strategy is developed to enhance the temporal coherence of the generated content. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods across various editing tasks, delivering superior editing performance. Xi Chen, Zhifei Zhang, He Zhang, Yuqian Zhou, Soo Ye Kim, Qing Liu, Yijun Li, Jianming Zhang, Nanxuan Zhao, Yilin Wang, Hui Ding, Zhe Lin, Hengshuang Zhao

We introduce UniReal, a unified framework designed to address various image generation and editing tasks. Existing solutions often vary by tasks, yet share fundamental principles: preserving consistency between inputs and outputs while capturing visual variations. Inspired by recent video generation models that effectively balance consistency and variation across frames, we propose a unifying approach that treats image-level tasks as discontinuous video generation. Specifically, we treat varying numbers of input and output images as frames, enabling seamless support for tasks such as image generation, editing, composition, etc. Although designed for image-level tasks, we leverage videos as a scalable source for universal supervision. UniReal learns world dynamics from large-scale videos, demonstrating advanced capability in handling shadows, reflections, pose variation, and object interaction, while also exhibiting emergent capability for novel applications.

UNOPose: Unseen Object Pose Estimation with an Unposed RGB-D Reference Image

Xingyu Liu, Gu Wang, Ruida Zhang, Chenyangguang Zhang, Federico Tombari, Xiangyang Ji

Unseen object pose estimation methods often rely on CAD models or multiple reference views, making the onboarding stage costly. To simplify reference acquisition, we aim to estimate the unseen object's pose through a single unposed RGB-D reference image. While previous works leverage reference images as pose anchors to limit the range of relative pose, our scenario presents significant challenges since the relative transformation could vary across the entire SE(3) space. Moreover, factors like occlusion, sensor noise, and extreme geometry could result in low viewpoint overlap. To address these challenges, we present a novel approach and benchmark, termed UNOPose, for UNseen One-reference-based object Pose estimation. Building upon a coarse-to-fine paradigm, UNOPose constructs an SE(3)-invariant reference frame to standardize object representation despite pose and size variations. To alleviate small overlap across viewpoints, we recalibrate the weight of each correspondence based on its predicted likelihood of being within the overlapping region. Evaluated on our proposed benchmark based on the BOP Challenge, UNOPose demonstrates superior performance, significantly outperforming traditional and learning-based methods in the one-reference setting and remaining competitive with CAD-model-based methods. The code and dataset are available at github.com/shanice-l/UNOPose.

UNIC-Adapter: Unified Image-instruction Adapter with Multi-modal Transformer for Image Generation

Lunhao Duan, Shanshan Zhao, Wenjun Yan, Yinglun Li, Qing-Guo Chen, Zhao Xu, Weihua Luo, Kaifu Zhang, Mingming Gong, Gui-Song Xia

Recently, text-to-image generation models have achieved remarkable advancements, particularly with diffusion models facilitating high-quality image synthesis from textual descriptions. However, these models often struggle with achieving precise control over pixel-level layouts, object appearances, and global styles when using text prompts alone. To mitigate this issue, previous works introduce conditional images as auxiliary inputs for image generation, enhancing control but typically necessitating specialized models tailored to different types of reference inputs. In this paper, we explore a new approach to unify controllable generation within a single framework. Specifically, we propose the unified image-instruction adapter (UNIC-Adapter) built on the Multi-Modal-Diffusion Transformer architecture, to enable flexible and controllable generation across diverse conditions without the need for multiple specialized models. Our UNIC-Adapter effectively extracts multi-modal instruction information by incorporating both conditional images and task instructions, injecting this information into the image generation process through a cross-attention mechanism enhanced by Rotary Position Embedding. Experimental results across a variety of tasks, including pixel-level spatial control, subject-driven image generation, and style-image-based image synthesis, demonstrate the effectiveness of our UNIC-Adapter in unified controllable image generation.

Suho Ryu, Kihyun Kim, Eugene Baek, Dongsoo Shin, Joonseok Lee

A variety of text-guided image editing models have been proposed recently. However, there is no widely-accepted standard evaluation method mainly due to the subjective nature of the task, letting researchers rely on manual user study. To address this, we introduce a novel Human-Aligned benchmark for Text-guided Image Editing (HATIE). Providing a large-scale benchmark set covering a wide range of editing tasks, it allows reliable evaluation, not limited to specific easy-to-evaluate cases. Also, HATIE provides a fully-automated and omnidirectional evaluation pipeline. Particularly, we combine multiple scores measuring various aspects of editing so as to align with human perception. We empirically verify that the evaluation of HATIE is indeed human-aligned in various aspects, and provide benchmark results on several state-of-the-art models to provide deeper insights on their performance.

Towards In-the-wild 3D Plane Reconstruction from a Single Image

Jiachen Liu, rui yu, Sili Chen, Sharon X. Huang, Hengkai Guo

3D plane reconstruction from a single image is a crucial yet challenging topic in 3D computer vision. Previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods have focused on training their system on a single dataset from either indoor or outdoor domain, limiting their generalizability across diverse testing data. In this work, we introduce a novel framework dubbed ZeroPlane, a Transformer-based model targeting zero-shot 3D plane detection and reconstruction from a single image, over diverse domains and environments. To enable data-driving models on multiple domains, we have curated a large-scale (over 14 datasets and 560,000 images), high-resolution, densely-annotated planar benchmark from various indoor and outdoor scenes. To address the challenge of achieving desirable planar geometry on multi-dataset training, we propose to disentangle the representation of plane normal and offset, and employ an exemplar-guided, classification-then-regression paradigm to learn plane and offset respectively. Additionally, we employ advanced backbones as image encoder, and present an effective pixel-geometry-enhanced plane embedding module to further facilitate planar reconstruction. Extensive experiments across multiple zero-shot evaluation datasets have demonstrated that our approach significantly outperforms previous methods on both reconstruction accuracy and generalizability, especially over in-the-wild data. We will release all of the labeled data, code and models upon the acceptance of this paper. Our code and data are available at: https://github.com/jcliu0428/ZeroPlane.

Towards All-in-One Medical Image Re-Identification

Yuan Tian, Kaiyuan Ji, Rongzhao Zhang, Yankai Jiang, Chunyi Li, Xiaosong Wang, Guangtao Zhai

Medical image re-identification (MedReID) is under-explored so far, despite its critical applications in personalized healthcare and privacy protection. In this paper, we introduce a thorough benchmark and a unified model for this problem.First, to handle various medical modalities, we propose a novel Continuous Modality-based Parameter Adapter (ComPA). ComPA condenses medical content into a continuous modality representation and dynamically adjusts the modality-agnostic model with modality-specific parameters at runtime. This allows a single model to adaptively learn and process diverse modality data.Furthermore, we integrate medical priors into our model by aligning it with a bag of pre-trained medical foundation models, in terms of the differential features.Compared to single-image feature, modeling the inter-image difference better fits the re-identification problem, which involves discriminating multiple images. We evaluate the proposed model against 25 foundation models and 8 large multi-modal language models across 11 image datasets, demonstrating consistently superior performance.Additionally, we deploy the proposed MedReID technique to two real-world applications, i.e., history-augmented personalized diagnosis and medical privacy protection.

Toward Generalized Image Quality Assessment: Relaxing the Perfect Reference Quality Assumption

Du Chen, Tianhe Wu, Kede Ma, Lei Zhang

Full-reference image quality assessment (FR-IQA) generally assumes that reference images are of perfect quality. However, this assumption is flawed due to the sensor and optical limitations of modern imaging systems. Moreover, recent generative enhancement methods are capable of producing images of higher quality than their original. All of these challenge the effectiveness and applicability of current FR-IQA models. To relax the assumption of perfect reference image quality, we build a large-scale IQA database, namely DiffIQA, containing approximately 180,000 images generated by a diffusion-based image enhancer with adjustable hyper-parameters. Each image is annotated by human subjects as either worse, similar, or better quality compared to its reference. Building on this, we present a generalized FR-IQA model, namely Adaptive FIdelity-Naturalness Evaluator (A-FINE), to accurately assess and adaptively combine the fidelity and naturalness of a test image. A-FINE aligns well with standard FR-IQA when the reference image is much more natural than the test image. We demonstrate by extensive experiments that A-FINE surpasses standard FR-IQA models on well-established IQA datasets and our newly created DiffIQA. To further validate A-FINE, we additionally construct a super-resolution IQA benchmark (SRIQA-Bench), encompassing test images derived from ten state-of-the-art SR methods with reliable human quality annotations. Tests on SRIQA-Bench re-affirm the advantages of A-FINE. The code and dataset are available at https://tianhewu.github.io/A-FINE-page.github.io/.

The Power of Context: How Multimodality Improves Image Super-Resolution

Kangfu Mei, Hossein Talebi, Mojtaba Ardakani, Vishal M. Patel, Peyman Milanfar, Mauricio Delbracio

Single-image super-resolution (SISR) remains challenging due to the inherent difficulty of recovering fine-grained details and preserving perceptual quality from low-resolution inputs. Existing methods often rely on limited image priors, leading to suboptimal results. We propose a novel approach that leverages the rich contextual information available in multiple modalities -- including depth, segmentation, edges, and text prompts -- to learn a powerful generative prior for SISR within a diffusion model framework. We introduce a flexible network architecture that effectively fuses multimodal information, accommodating an arbitrary number of input modalities without requiring significant modifications to the diffusion process. Crucially, we mitigate hallucinations, often introduced by text prompts, by using spatial information from other modalities to guide regional text-based conditioning. Each modality's guidance strength can also be controlled independently, allowing steering outputs toward different directions, such as increasing bokeh through depth or adjusting object prominence via segmentation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model surpasses state-of-the-art generative SISR methods, achieving superior visual quality and fidelity.

Text-Driven Fashion Image Editing with Compositional Concept Learning and Counterfactual Abduction

Shanshan Huang, Haoxuan Li, Chunyuan Zheng, Mingyuan Ge, Wei Gao, Lei Wang, Li Liu

Fashion image editing is a valuable tool for designers to convey their creative ideas by visualizing design concepts. With the recent advances in text editing methods, significant progress has been made in fashion image editing. However, they face two key challenges: spurious correlations in training data often induce changes in other areas when editing an area representing the intended editing concept, and these models typically lack the ability to edit multiple concepts simultaneously. To address the above challenges, we propose a novel \underline T ext-driven \underline F ashion \underline I mage edi\underline T ing framework called T-FIT to mitigate the impact of spurious correlation by integrating counterfactual reasoning with compositional concept learning to precisely ensure compositional multi-concept fashion image editing relying solely on text descriptions. Specifically, T-FIT includes three key components. (i) Counterfactual abduction module, which learns an exogenous variable of the source image by a denoising U-Net model. (ii) Concept learning module, which identifies concepts in fashion image editing--such as clothing types and colors and projects a target concept into the space spanned from a series of textual prompts. (iii) Concept composition module, which enables simultaneous adjustments of multiple concepts by aggregating each concept's direction vector obtained from the concept learning module. Extensive experiments show that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on various fashion image editing tasks, including single-concept editing (e.g., sleeve length, clothing type) and multi-concept editing (e.g., color & sleeve length).

Teaching Large Language Models to Regress Accurate Image Quality Scores Using Score Distribution

Zhiyuan You, Xin Cai, Jinjin Gu, Tianfan Xue, Chao Dong

With the rapid advancement of Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs), MLLM-based Image Quality Assessment (IQA) methods have shown promising performance in linguistic quality description. However, current methods still fall short in accurately scoring image quality. In this work, we aim to leverage MLLMs to regress accurate quality scores. A key challenge is that the quality score is inherently continuous, typically modeled as a Gaussian distribution, whereas MLLMs generate discrete token outputs. This mismatch necessitates score discretization. Previous approaches discretize the mean score into a one-hot label, resulting in information loss and failing to capture inter-image relationships. We propose a distribution-based approach that discretizes the score distribution into a soft label. This method preserves the characteristics of the score distribution, achieving high accuracy and maintaining inter-image relationships. Moreover, to address dataset variation, where different IQA datasets exhibit various distributions, we introduce a fidelity loss based on Thurstone's model. This loss captures intra-dataset relationships, facilitating co-training across multiple IQA datasets. With these designs, we develop the distribution-based Depicted image Quality Assessment model for Score regression (DeQA-Score). Experiments across multiple benchmarks show that DeQA-Score stably outperforms baselines in score regression. Also, DeQA-Score can predict the score distribution that closely aligns with human annotations. Codes and model weights have been released in https://depictqa.github.io/deqa-score/.

Targeted Forgetting of Image Subgroups in CLIP Models

Zeliang Zhang, Gaowen Liu, Charles Fleming, Ramana Rao Kompella, Chenliang Xu

Foundation models (FMs) such as CLIP have demonstrated impressive zero-shot performance across various tasks by leveraging large-scale, unsupervised pre-training. However, they often inherit harmful or unwanted knowledge from noisy internet-sourced datasets, compromising their reliability in real-world applications. Existing model unlearning methods either rely on access to pre-trained datasets or focus on coarse-grained unlearning (e.g., entire classes), leaving a critical gap for fine-grained unlearning. In this paper, we address the challenging scenario of selectively forgetting specific portions of knowledge within a class--without access to pre-trained data--while preserving the model's overall performance. We propose a novel three-stage approach that progressively unlearns targeted knowledge while mitigating over-forgetting. It consists of (1) a forgetting stage to fine-tune the CLIP on samples to be forgotten, (2) a reminding stage to restore performance on retained samples, and (3) a restoring stage to recover zero-shot capabilities using model souping. Additionally, we introduce knowledge distillation to handle the distribution disparity between forgetting/retaining samples and unseen pre-trained data. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-10, ImageNet-1K, and style datasets demonstrate that our approach effectively unlearns specific subgroups while maintaining strong zero-shot performance on semantically similar subgroups and other categories, significantly outperforming baseline unlearning methods, which lose effectiveness under the CLIP unlearning setting.

SwiftEdit: Lightning Fast Text-Guided Image Editing via One-Step Diffusion

Trong-Tung Nguyen, Quang Nguyen, Khoi Nguyen, Anh Tran, Cuong Pham

Recent advances in text-guided image editing enable users to perform image edits through simple text inputs, leveraging the extensive priors of multi-step diffusion-based text-to-image models. However, these methods often fall short of the speed demands required for real-world and on-device applications due to the costly multi-step inversion and sampling process involved. In response to this, we introduce SwiftEdit, a simple yet highly efficient editing tool that achieve instant text-guided image editing in 0.23s. The advancement of SwiftEdit lies in its two novel contributions: a one-step inversion framework that enables one-step image reconstruction via inversion and a mask-guided editing technique with our proposed attention rescaling mechanism to perform localized image editing. Extensive experiments are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SwiftEdit. In particular, SwiftEdit enables instant text-guided image editing, which is extremely faster than previous multi-step methods (at least 50 times faster) while maintain a competitive performance in editing results. Our project is at https://swift-edit.github.io/.
