Meerkat: Audio-Visual Large Language Model for Grounding in Space and Time

Sanjoy Chowdhury, Sayan Nag, Subhrajyoti Dasgupta, Jun Chen, Mohamed Elhoseiny, Ruohan Gao, Dinesh Manocha

Expand abstract

"Leveraging Large Language Models’ remarkable proficiency in text-based tasks, recent works on Multi-modal LLMs (MLLMs) extend them to other modalities like vision and audio. However, the progress in these directions has been mostly focused on tasks that only require a coarse-grained understanding of the audio-visual semantics. We present , an audio-visual LLM equipped with a fine-grained understanding of image and audio both spatially and temporally. With a new modality alignment module based on optimal transport and a cross-attention module that enforces audio-visual consistency, can tackle challenging tasks such as audio referred image grounding, image guided audio temporal localization, and audio-visual fact-checking. Moreover, we carefully curate a large dataset that comprises 3M instruction tuning samples collected from open-source datasets, and introduce that unifies five challenging audio-visual tasks. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on all these downstream tasks with a relative improvement of up to 37.12%."

MedRAT: Unpaired Medical Report Generation via Auxiliary Tasks

Elad Hirsch, Gefen Dawidowicz, Ayellet Tal

Expand abstract

"Medical report generation from X-ray images is a challenging task, particularly in an unpaired setting where paired image-report data is unavailable for training. To address this challenge, we propose a novel model that leverages the available information in two distinct datasets, one comprising reports and the other consisting of images. The core idea of our model revolves around the notion that combining auto-encoding report generation with multi-modal (report-image) alignment can offer a solution. However, the challenge persists regarding how to achieve this alignment when pair correspondence is absent. Our proposed solution involves the use of auxiliary tasks, particularly contrastive learning and classification, to position related images and reports in close proximity to each other. This approach differs from previous methods that rely on pre-processing steps, such as using external information stored in a knowledge graph. Our model, named MedRAT, surpasses previous state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating the feasibility of generating comprehensive medical reports without the need for paired data or external tools. Our code is publicly available 1 . 1 https://github.com/eladhi/MedRAT"

McGrids: Monte Carlo-Driven Adaptive Grids for Iso-Surface Extraction

Daxuan Ren, Hezi Shi, Jianmin Zheng, Jianfei Cai

Expand abstract

"Iso-surface extraction from an implicit field is a fundamental process in various applications of computer vision and graphics. When dealing with geometric shapes with complicated geometric details, many existing algorithms suffer from high computational costs and memory usage. This paper proposes McGrids, a novel approach to improve the efficiency of iso-surface extraction. The key idea is to construct adaptive grids for iso-surface extraction rather than using a simple uniform grid as prior art does. Specifically, we formulate the problem of constructing adaptive grids as a probability sampling problem, which is then solved by Monte Carlo process. We demonstrate McGrids’ capability with extensive experiments from both analytical SDFs computed from surface meshes and learned implicit fields from real multiview images. The experiment results show that our McGrids can significantly reduce the number of implicit field queries, resulting in significant memory reduction, while producing high-quality meshes with rich geometric details."

MaxFusion: Plug&Play Multi-Modal Generation in Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Nithin Gopalakrishnan Nair, Jeya Maria Jose Valanarasu, Vishal Patel

Expand abstract

"Large diffusion-based Text-to-Image (T2I) models have shown impressive generative powers for text-to-image generation and spatially conditioned image generation. We can train the model end-to-end with paired data for most applications to obtain photorealistic generation quality. However, to add a task, one often needs to retrain the model from scratch using paired data across all modalities to retain good generation performance. This paper tackles this issue and proposes a novel strategy to scale a generative model across new tasks with minimal computation. During our experiments, we discovered that the variance maps of intermediate feature maps of diffusion models capture the conditioning intensity. Utilizing this prior information, we propose MaxFusion, an efficient strategy to scale up text-to-image generation models to accommodate new modality conditions. Specifically, we combine aligned features of multiple models, bringing a compositional effect. Our fusion strategy can be integrated into off-the-shelf models to enhance their generative prowess."

Expand abstract

"The remarkable progress of Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) has gained unparalleled attention. However, their capabilities in visual math problem-solving remain insufficiently evaluated and understood. We investigate current benchmarks to incorporate excessive visual content within textual questions, which potentially assist MLLMs in deducing answers without truly interpreting the input diagrams. To this end, we introduce , an all-around visual math benchmark designed for an equitable and in-depth evaluation of MLLMs. We meticulously collect 2,612 high-quality, multi-subject math problems with diagrams from publicly available sources. Each problem is then transformed by human annotators into six distinct versions, each offering varying degrees of information content in multi-modality, contributing to 15K test samples in total. This approach allows to comprehensively assess whether and how much MLLMs can truly understand the visual diagrams for mathematical reasoning. In addition, we propose a Chain-of-Thought (CoT) evaluation strategy for a fine-grained assessment of the output answers. Rather than naively judging true or false, we employ GPT-4(V) to adaptively assess each step with error analysis to derive a total score, which can reveal the inner CoT reasoning quality by MLLMs. With , we unveil that, most existing MLLMs struggle to understand math diagrams, relying heavily on textual questions. Surprisingly, some of them even achieve 5%+ higher accuracy without the visual input. Besides, GPT-4V and MAVIS-7B achieve the best overall performance within closed-source and open-source models, respectively. We hope the benchmark may provide unique insights to guide the future development of MLLMs. Project page: https://mathverse-cuhk.github.io. ∗ Equal contribution ‡ Project lead † Corresponding author"

Match-Stereo-Videos: Bidirectional Alignment for Consistent Dynamic Stereo Matching

Junpeng Jing, Ye Mao, Krystian Mikolajczyk

Expand abstract

"Dynamic stereo matching is the task of estimating consistent disparities from stereo videos with dynamic objects. Recent learning-based methods prioritize optimal performance on a single stereo pair, resulting in temporal inconsistencies. Existing video methods apply per-frame matching and window-based cost aggregation across the time dimension, leading to low-frequency oscillations at the scale of the window size. Towards this challenge, we develop a bidirectional alignment mechanism for adjacent frames as a fundamental operation. We further propose a novel framework, BiDAStereo, that achieves consistent dynamic stereo matching. Unlike the existing methods, we model this task as local matching and global aggregation. Locally, we consider correlation in a triple-frame manner to pool information from adjacent frames and improve the temporal consistency. Globally, to exploit the entire sequence’s consistency and extract dynamic scene cues for aggregation, we develop a motion-propagation recurrent unit. Extensive experiments demonstrate the performance of our method, showcasing improvements in prediction quality and achieving SoTA results on commonly used benchmarks."

Expand abstract

"Text-to-image (T2I) diffusion models have shown significant success in personalized text-to-image generation, which aims to generate novel images with human identities indicated by the reference images. Despite promising identity fidelity has been achieved by several tuning-free methods, they often suffer from overfitting issues. The learned identity tends to entangle with irrelevant information, resulting in unsatisfied text controllability, especially on faces. In this work, we present MasterWeaver, a test-time tuning-free method designed to generate personalized images with both high identity fidelity and flexible editability. Specifically, MasterWeaver adopts an encoder to extract identity features and steers the image generation through additionally introduced cross attention. To improve editability while maintaining identity fidelity, we propose an editing direction loss for training, which aligns the editing directions of our MasterWeaver with those of the original T2I model. Additionally, a face-augmented dataset is constructed to facilitate disentangled identity learning, and further improve the editability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our MasterWeaver can not only generate personalized images with faithful identity, but also exhibit superiority in text controllability. Our code can be found at https://github. com/csyxwei/MasterWeaver."

Masked Video and Body-worn IMU Autoencoder for Egocentric Action Recognition

Mingfang Zhang, Yifei Huang, Ruicong Liu, Yoichi Sato

Expand abstract

"Compared with visual signals, Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) placed on human limbs can capture accurate motion signals while being robust to lighting variation and occlusion. While these characteristics are intuitively valuable to help egocentric action recognition, the potential of IMUs remains under-explored. In this work, we present a novel method for action recognition that integrates motion data from body-worn IMUs with egocentric video. Due to the scarcity of labeled multimodal data, we design an MAE-based self-supervised pretraining method, obtaining strong multi-modal representations via modeling the natural correlation between visual and motion signals. To model the complex relation of multiple IMU devices placed across the body, we exploit the collaborative dynamics in multiple IMU devices and propose to embed the relative motion features of human joints into a graph structure. Experiments show our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on multiple public datasets. The effectiveness of our MAE-based pretraining and graph-based IMU modeling are further validated by experiments in more challenging scenarios, including partially missing IMU devices and video quality corruption, promoting more flexible usages in the real world."

Masked Motion Prediction with Semantic Contrast for Point Cloud Sequence Learning

Yuehui Han, Can Xu, Rui Xu, Jianjun Qian, Jin Xie

Expand abstract

"Self-supervised representation learning on point cloud sequences is a challenging task due to the complex spatio-temporal structure. Most recent attempts aim to train the point cloud sequences representation model by reconstructing the point coordinates or designing frame-level contrastive learning. However, these methods do not effectively explore the information of temporal dimension and global semantics, which are the very important components in point cloud sequences. To this end, in this paper, we propose a novel masked motion prediction and semantic contrast (M2PSC) based self-supervised representation learning framework for point cloud sequences. Specifically, it aims to learn a representation model by integrating three pretext tasks into the same masked autoencoder framework. First, motion trajectory prediction, which can enhance the model’s ability to understand dynamic information in point cloud sequences. Second, semantic contrast, which can guide the model to better explore the global semantics of point cloud sequences. Third, appearance reconstruction, which can help capture the appearance information of point cloud sequences. In this way, our method can force the model to simultaneously encode spatial and temporal structure in the point cloud sequences. Experimental results on four benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. Source code is available at https://github.com/yh-han/M2PSC.git."

Masked Generative Video-to-Audio Transformers with Enhanced Synchronicity

Santiago Pascual, Chunghsin YEH*, Ioannis Tsiamas, Joan Serrà

Expand abstract

"Video-to-audio (V2A) generation leverages visual-only video features to render plausible sounds that match the scene. Importantly, the generated sound onsets should match the visual actions that are aligned with them, otherwise unnatural synchronization artifacts arise. Recent works have explored the progression of conditioning sound generators on still images and then video features, focusing on quality and semantic matching while ignoring synchronization, or by sacrificing some amount of quality to focus on improving synchronization only. In this work, we propose a V2A generative model, named MaskVAT, that interconnects a full-band high-quality general audio codec with a sequence-to-sequence masked generative model. This combination allows modeling high audio quality, semantic matching, and temporal synchronicity at the same time. Our results show that, by combining a high-quality codec with the proper pre-trained audio-visual features and a sequence-to-sequence parallel structure, we are able to yield highly synchronized results on one hand, whilst being competitive with the state of the art of non-codec generative audio models. Masked Angle-Aware Autoencoder for Remote Sensing Images

Expand abstract

"To overcome the inherent domain gap between remote sensing (RS) images and natural images, some self-supervised representation learning methods have made promising progress. However, they have overlooked the diverse angles present in RS objects. This paper proposes the Masked Angle-Aware Autoencoder (MA3E) to perceive and learn angles during pre-training. We design a scaling center crop operation to create the rotated crop with random orientation on each original image, introducing the explicit angle variation. MA3E inputs this composite image while reconstruct the original image, aiming to effectively learn rotation-invariant representations by restoring the angle variation introduced on the rotated crop. To avoid biases caused by directly reconstructing the rotated crop, we propose an Optimal Transport (OT) loss that automatically assigns similar original image patches to each rotated crop patch for reconstruction. MA3E1 demonstrates more competitive performance than existing pre-training methods on seven different RS image datasets in three downstream tasks. 1 Our code will be released at: https://github.com/benesakitam/MA3E"

Mask as Supervision: Leveraging Unified Mask Information for Unsupervised 3D Pose Estimation

Yuchen Yang, Yu Qiao, Xiao Sun

Expand abstract

"Automatic estimation of 3D human pose from monocular RGB images is a challenging and unsolved problem in computer vision. In a supervised manner, approaches heavily rely on laborious annotations and present hampered generalization ability due to the limited diversity of 3D pose datasets. To address these challenges, we propose a unified framework that leverages mask as supervision for unsupervised 3D pose estimation. With general unsupervised segmentation algorithms, the proposed model employs skeleton and physique representations that exploit accurate pose information from coarse to fine. Compared with previous unsupervised approaches, we organize the human skeleton in a fully unsupervised way which enables the processing of annotation-free data and provides ready-to-use estimation results. Comprehensive experiments demonstrate our state-of-the-art pose estimation performance on Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets. Further experiments on in-the-wild datasets also illustrate the capability to access more data to boost our model. Code will be available at https: //github.com/Charrrrrlie/Mask-as-Supervision."

MarvelOVD: Marrying Object Recognition and Vision-Language Models for Robust Open-Vocabulary Object Detection

Expand abstract

"Learning from pseudo-labels that generated with VLMs (Vision Language Models) has been shown as a promising solution to assist open vocabulary detection (OVD) in recent studies. However, due to the domain gap between VLM and vision-detection tasks, pseudo-labels produced by the VLMs are prone to be noisy, while the training design of the detector further amplifies the bias. In this work, we investigate the root cause of VLMs’ biased prediction under the OVD context. Our observations lead to a simple yet effective paradigm, coded , that generates significantly better training targets and optimizes the learning procedure in an online manner by marrying the capability of the detector with the vision-language model. Our key insight is that the detector itself can act as a strong auxiliary guidance to accommodate VLM’s inability of understanding both the “background” and the context of a proposal within the image. Based on it, we greatly purify the noisy pseudo-labels via Online Mining and propose Adaptive Reweighting to effectively suppress the biased training boxes that are not well aligned with the target object. In addition, we also identify a neglected “base-novel-conflict” problem and introduce stratified label assignments to prevent it. Extensive experiments on COCO and LVIS datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms the other state-of-the-arts by significant margins. Markov Knowledge Distillation: Make Nasty Teachers trained by Self-undermining Knowledge Distillation Fully Distillable

En-Hui Yang, Linfeng Ye

Expand abstract

"To protect intellectual property of a deep neural network (DNN), two knowledge distillation (KD) related concepts are proposed: distillable DNN and KD-resistant DNN. A DNN is said to be distillable if used as a black-box input-output teacher, it can be distilled by a KD method to train a student model so that the distilled student outperforms the student trained alone with label smoothing (LS student) in terms of accuracy. A DNN is said to be KD-resistant with respect to a specific KD method if used as a black-box input-output teacher, it cannot be distilled by that specific KD method to yield a distilled student outperforming LS student in terms of accuracy. A new KD method called Markov KD (MKD) is further presented. When applied to nasty teachers trained by self-undermining KD, MKD makes those nasty teachers fully distillable, although those nasty teachers are shown to be KD-resistant with respect to state-of-the-art KD methods existing in the literature before our work. When applied to normal teachers, MKD yields distilled students outperforming those trained by KD from the same normal teachers by a large margin. More interestingly, MKD is capable of transferring knowledge from teachers trained in one domain to students trained in another domain."

"Online high-definition (HD) map construction is an important and challenging task in autonomous driving. Recently, there has been a growing interest in cost-effective multi-view camera-based methods without relying on other sensors like LiDAR. However, these methods suffer from a lack of explicit depth information, necessitating the use of large models to achieve satisfactory performance. To address this, we employ the Knowledge Distillation (KD) idea for efficient HD map construction for the first time and introduce a novel KD-based approach called MapDistill to transfer knowledge from a high-performance camera-LiDAR fusion model to a lightweight camera-only model. Specifically, we adopt the teacher-student architecture, , a camera-LiDAR fusion model as the teacher and a lightweight camera model as the student, and devise a dual BEV transform module to facilitate cross-modal knowledge distillation while maintaining cost-effective camera-only deployment. Additionally, we present a comprehensive distillation scheme encompassing cross-modal relation distillation, dual-level feature distillation, and map head distillation. This approach alleviates knowledge transfer challenges between modalities, enabling the student model to learn improved feature representations for HD map construction. Experimental results on the challenging nuScenes dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of MapDistill, surpassing existing competitors by over 7.7 mAP or 4.5× speedup."

Expand abstract

"Performing language-conditioned robotic manipulation tasks in unstructured environments is highly demanded for general intelligent robots. Conventional robotic manipulation methods usually learn a semantic representation of the observation for action prediction, which ignores the scene-level spatiotemporal dynamics for human goal completion. In this paper, we propose a dynamic Gaussian Splatting method named ManiGaussian for multi-task robotic manipulation, which mines scene dynamics via future scene reconstruction. Specifically, we first formulate the dynamic Gaussian Splatting framework that infers the semantics propagation in the Gaussian embedding space, where the semantic representation is leveraged to predict the optimal robot action. Then, we build a Gaussian world model to parameterize the distribution in our dynamic Gaussian Splatting framework, which provides informative supervision in the interactive environment via future scene reconstruction. We evaluate our ManiGaussian on 10 RLBench tasks with 166 variations, and the results demonstrate our framework can outperform the state-of-the-art methods by 13.1% in average success rate1 . 1 Project page: https://guanxinglu.github.io/ManiGaussian/"

MambaIR: A Simple Baseline for Image Restoration with State-Space Model

Expand abstract

"Recent years have seen significant advancements in image restoration, largely attributed to the development of modern deep neural networks, such as CNNs and Transformers. However, existing restoration backbones often face the dilemma between global receptive fields and efficient computation, hindering their application in practice. Recently, the Selective Structured State Space Model, especially the improved version Mamba, has shown great potential for long-range dependency modeling with linear complexity, which offers a way to resolve the above dilemma. However, the standard Mamba still faces certain challenges in low-level vision such as local pixel forgetting and channel redundancy. In this work, we introduce a simple but effective baseline, named MambaIR, which introduces both local enhancement and channel attention to improve the vanilla Mamba. In this way, our MambaIR takes advantage of the local pixel similarity and reduces the channel redundancy. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of our method, for example, MambaIR outperforms SwinIR by up to 0.45dB on image SR, using similar computational cost but with a global receptive field. Expand abstract

"Recent years have witnessed the strong power of 3D generation models, which offer a new level of creative flexibility by allowing users to guide the 3D content generation process through a single image or natural language. However, it remains challenging for existing 3D generation methods to create subject-driven 3D content across diverse prompts. In this paper, we introduce a novel 3D customization method, dubbed Make-Your-3D that can personalize high-fidelity and consistent 3D content from only a single image of a subject with text description within 5 minutes. Our key insight is to harmonize the distributions of a multi-view diffusion model and an identity-specific 2D generative model, aligning them with the distribution of the desired 3D subject. Specifically, we design a co-evolution framework to reduce the variance of distributions, where each model undergoes a process of learning from the other through identity-aware optimization and subject-prior optimization, respectively. Make a Strong Teacher with Label Assistance: A Novel Knowledge Distillation Approach for Semantic Segmentation

Expand abstract

"In this paper, we introduce a novel knowledge distillation approach for the semantic segmentation task. Unlike previous methods that rely on power-trained teachers or other modalities to provide additional knowledge, our approach does not require complex teacher models or information from extra sensors. Specifically, for the teacher model training, we propose to noise the label and then incorporate it into input to effectively boost the lightweight teacher performance. To ensure the robustness of the teacher model against the introduced noise, we propose a dual-path consistency training strategy featuring a distance loss between the outputs of two paths. For the student model training, we keep it consistent with the standard distillation for simplicity. Our approach not only boosts the efficacy of knowledge distillation but also increases the flexibility in selecting teacher and student models. To demonstrate the advantages of our Label Assisted Distillation (LAD) method, we conduct extensive experiments on five challenging datasets including Cityscapes, ADE20K, PASCAL-VOC, COCO-Stuff 10K, and COCO-Stuff 164K, five popular models: FCN, PSPNet, DeepLabV3, STDC, and OCRNet, and results show the effectiveness and generalization of our approach. We posit that incorporating labels into the input, as demonstrated in our work, will provide valuable insights into related fields. Expand abstract

"Diffusion models have proven to be highly effective in image and video generation; however, they encounter challenges in the correct composition of objects when generating images of varying sizes due to single-scale training data. Adapting large pre-trained diffusion models to higher resolution demands substantial computational and optimization resources, yet achieving generation capabilities comparable to low-resolution models remains challenging. This paper proposes a novel self-cascade diffusion model that leverages the knowledge gained from a well-trained low-resolution image/video generation model, enabling rapid adaptation to higher-resolution generation. Building on this, we employ the pivot replacement strategy to facilitate a tuning-free version by progressively leveraging reliable semantic guidance derived from the low-resolution model. We further propose to integrate a sequence of learnable multi-scale upsampler modules for a tuning version capable of efficiently learning structural details at a new scale from a small amount of newly acquired high-resolution training data. Compared to full fine-tuning, our approach achieves a 5× training speed-up and requires only 0.002M tuning parameters. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach can quickly adapt to higher-resolution image and video synthesis by fine-tuning for just 10k steps, with virtually no additional inference time."
