PoseSOR: Human Pose Can Guide Our Attention

Huankang Guan, Rynson W. H. Lau

Expand abstract

"Salient Object Ranking (SOR) aims to study how human observers shift their attention among various objects within a scene. Previous works attempt to excavate explicit visual saliency cues, , spatial frequency and semantic context, to tackle this challenge. However, these visual saliency cues may fall short in handling real-world scenarios, which often involve various human activities and interactions. We observe that human observers’ attention can be reflexively guided by the poses and gestures of the people in the scene, which indicate their activities. For example, observers tend to shift their attention to follow others’ head orientation or running/walking direction to anticipate what will happen. Inspired by this observation, we propose to exploit human poses in understanding high-level interactions between human participants and their surroundings for robust salient object ranking. Specifically, we propose PoseSOR, a human pose-aware SOR model for the SOR task, with two novel modules: 1) a Pose-Aware Interaction (PAI) module to integrate human pose knowledge into salient object queries for learning high-level interactions, and 2) a Pose-Driven Ranking (PDR) module to apply pose knowledge as directional cues to help predict where human attention will shift to. To our knowledge, our approach is the first to explore human pose for salient object ranking. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, particularly in complex scenes, and our model sets the new state-of-the-art on the SOR benchmarks. PoseCrafter: One-Shot Personalized Video Synthesis Following Flexible Pose Control

Yong Zhong, Min Zhao, Zebin You, Xiaofeng Yu, Changwang Zhang, Chongxuan Li

Expand abstract

"In this paper, we introduce PoseCrafter, a one-shot method for personalized video generation following the control of flexible poses. Built upon Stable Diffusion and ControlNet, we carefully design an inference process to produce high-quality videos without the corresponding ground-truth frames. First, we select an appropriate reference frame from the training video and invert it to initialize all latent variables for generation. Then, we insert the corresponding training pose into the target pose sequences to enhance faithfulness through a trained temporal attention module. Furthermore, to alleviate the face and hand degradation resulting from discrepancies between poses of training videos and inference poses, we implement simple latent editing through an affine transformation matrix involving facial and hand landmarks. Extensive experiments on several datasets demonstrate that PoseCrafter achieves superior results to baselines pre-trained on a vast collection of videos under 8 commonly used metrics. Besides, PoseCrafter can follow poses from different individuals or artificial edits and simultaneously retain the human identity in an open-domain training video. Our project page is available at https://ml-gsai.github.io/PoseCrafter-demo/."

PoseAugment: Generative Human Pose Data Augmentation with Physical Plausibility for IMU-based Motion Capture

Zhuojun Li, Chun Yu, Chen Liang, Yuanchun Shi

Expand abstract

"The data scarcity problem is a crucial factor that hampers the model performance of IMU-based human motion capture. However, effective data augmentation for IMU-based motion capture is challenging, since it has to capture the physical relations and constraints of the human body, while maintaining the data distribution and quality. We propose PoseAugment, a novel pipeline incorporating VAE-based pose generation and physical optimization. Given a pose sequence, the VAE module generates infinite poses with both high fidelity and diversity, while keeping the data distribution. The physical module optimizes poses to satisfy physical constraints with minimal motion restrictions. High-quality IMU data are then synthesized from the augmented poses for training motion capture models. Experiments show that PoseAugment outperforms previous data augmentation and pose generation methods in terms of motion capture accuracy, revealing a strong potential of our method to alleviate the data collection burden for IMU-based motion capture and related tasks driven by human poses."

Pose Guided Fine-Grained Sign Language Video Generation

Tongkai Shi, Lianyu Hu, Fanhua Shang, Jichao Feng, liu peidong, Wei Feng

Expand abstract

"Sign language videos are an important medium for spreading and learning sign language. However, most existing human image synthesis methods produce sign language images with details that are distorted, blurred, or structurally incorrect. They also produce sign language video frames with poor temporal consistency, with anomalies such as flickering and abrupt detail changes between the previous and next frames. To address these limitations, we propose a novel Pose-Guided Motion Model (PGMM) for generating fine-grained and motion-consistent sign language videos. Firstly, we propose a new Coarse Motion Module (CMM), which completes the deformation of features by optical flow warping, thus transfering the motion of coarse-grained structures without changing the appearance; Secondly, we propose a new Pose Fusion Module (PFM), which guides the modal fusion of RGB and pose features, thus completing the fine-grained generation. Finally, we design a new metric, Temporal Consistency Difference (TCD) to quantitatively assess the degree of temporal consistency of a video by comparing the difference between the frames of the reconstructed video and the previous and next frames of the target video. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods in most benchmark tests, with visible improvements in details and temporal consistency."

PosFormer: Recognizing Complex Handwritten Mathematical Expression with Position Forest Transformer

Tongkun Guan, Chengyu Lin, Wei Shen, Xiaokang Yang

Expand abstract

"Handwritten Mathematical Expression Recognition (HMER) has wide applications in human-machine interaction scenarios, such as digitized education and automated offices. Recently, sequence-based models with encoder-decoder architectures have been commonly adopted to address this task by directly predicting LaTeX sequences of expression images. However, these methods only implicitly learn the syntax rules provided by LaTeX, which may fail to describe the position and hierarchical relationship between symbols due to complex structural relations and diverse handwriting styles. To overcome this challenge, we propose a position forest transformer (PosFormer) for HMER, which jointly optimizes two tasks: expression recognition and position recognition, to explicitly enable position-aware symbol feature representation learning. Specifically, we first design a position forest that models the mathematical expression as a forest structure and parses the relative position relationships between symbols. Without requiring extra annotations, each symbol is assigned a position identifier in the forest to denote its relative spatial position. Second, we propose an implicit attention correction module to accurately capture attention for HMER in the sequence-based decoder architecture. Extensive experiments validate the superiority of PosFormer, which consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art methods 2.03%/1.22%/2.00%, 1.83%, and 4.62% gains on the single-line CROHME 2014/2016/2019, multi-line M2 E, and complex MNE datasets, respectively, with no additional latency or computational cost."

Portrait4D-v2: Pseudo Multi-View Data Creates Better 4D Head Synthesizer

Yu Deng, Duomin Wang, Baoyuan Wang

Expand abstract

"In this paper, we propose a novel learning approach for feed-forward one-shot 4D head avatar synthesis. Different from existing methods that often learn from reconstructing monocular videos guided by 3DMM, we employ pseudo multi-view videos to learn a 4D head synthesizer in a data-driven manner, avoiding reliance on inaccurate 3DMM reconstruction that could be detrimental to the synthesis performance. The key idea is to first learn a 3D head synthesizer using synthetic multi-view images to convert monocular real videos into multi-view ones, and then utilize the pseudo multi-view videos to learn a 4D head synthesizer via cross-view self-reenactment. By leveraging a simple vision transformer backbone with motion-aware cross-attentions, our method exhibits superior performance compared to previous methods in terms of reconstruction fidelity, geometry consistency, and motion control accuracy. We hope our method offers novel insights into integrating 3D priors with 2D supervisions for improved 4D head avatar creation."

Ponymation: Learning Articulated 3D Animal Motions from Unlabeled Online Videos

Keqiang Sun, Dor Litvak, Yunzhi Zhang, Hongsheng Li, Jiajun Wu, Shangzhe Wu

Expand abstract

"We introduce a new method for learning a generative model of articulated 3D animal motions from raw, unlabeled online videos. Unlike existing approaches for 3D motion synthesis, our model requires no pose annotations or parametric shape models for training; it learns purely from a collection of unlabeled web video clips, leveraging semantic correspondences distilled from self-supervised image features. At the core of our method is a video Photo-Geometric Auto-Encoding framework that decomposes each training video clip into a set of explicit geometric and photometric representations, including a rest-pose 3D shape, an articulated pose sequence, and texture, with the objective of re-rendering the input video via a differentiable renderer. This decomposition allows us to learn a generative model over the underlying articulated pose sequences akin to a Variational Auto-Encoding (VAE) formulation, but without requiring any external pose annotations. At inference time, we can generate new motion sequences by sampling from the learned motion VAE, and create plausible 4D animations of an animal automatically within seconds given a single input image."

Expand abstract

"Reconstructing geometry and topology structures from raw unstructured data has always been an important research topic in indoor mapping research. In this paper, we aim to reconstruct the floorplan with a vectorized representation from point clouds. Despite significant advancements achieved in recent years, current methods still encounter several challenges, such as missing corners or edges, inaccuracies in corner positions or angles, self-intersecting or overlapping polygons, and potentially implausible topology. To tackle these challenges, we present PolyRoom, a room-aware Transformer that leverages uniform sampling representation, room-aware query initialization, and room-aware self-attention for floorplan reconstruction. Specifically, we adopt a uniform sampling floorplan representation to enable dense supervision during training and effective utilization of angle information. Additionally, we propose a room-aware query initialization scheme to prevent non-polygonal sequences and introduce room-aware self-attention to enhance memory efficiency and model performance. Experimental results on two widely used datasets demonstrate that PolyRoom surpasses current state-of-the-art methods both quantitatively and qualitatively. "This paper considers the problem of generative novel view synthesis (GNVS), generating novel, plausible views of a scene given a limited number of known views. Here, we propose a set-based generative model that can simultaneously generate multiple, self-consistent new views, conditioned on any number of views. Our approach is not limited to generating a single image at a time and can condition on a variable number of views. As a result, when generating a large number of views, our method is not restricted to a low-order autoregressive generation approach and is better able to maintain generated image quality over large sets of images. We evaluate our model on standard NVS datasets and show that it outperforms the state-of-the-art image-based GNVS baselines. Further, we show that the model is capable of generating sets of views that have no natural sequential ordering, like loops and binocular trajectories, and significantly outperforms other methods on such tasks. PointRegGPT: Boosting 3D Point Cloud Registration using Generative Point-Cloud Pairs for Training

Expand abstract

"Data plays a crucial role in training learning-based methods for 3D point cloud registration. However, the real-world dataset is expensive to build, while rendering-based synthetic data suffers from domain gaps. In this work, we present , boosting 3D Point cloud Registration using Generative Point-cloud pairs for Training. Given a single depth map, we first apply a random camera motion to re-project it into a target depth map. Converting them to point clouds gives a training pair. To enhance the data realism, we formulate a generative model as a depth inpainting diffusion to process the target depth map with the re-projected source depth map as the condition. Also, we design a depth correction module to alleviate artifacts caused by point penetration during the re-projection. To our knowledge, this is the first generative approach that explores realistic data generation for indoor 3D point cloud registration. When equipped with our approach, several recent algorithms can improve their performance significantly and achieve SOTA consistently on two common benchmarks. The code and dataset will be released on https://github.com/Chen-Suyi/PointRegGPT."

Point-supervised Panoptic Segmentation via Estimating Pseudo Labels from Learnable Distance

Jing Li, Junsong Fan, Zhaoxiang Zhang

Expand abstract

"To bridge the gap between point labels and per-pixel labels, existing point-supervised panoptic segmentation methods usually estimate dense pseudo labels by assigning unlabeled pixels to corresponding instances according to rule-based pixel-to-instance distances. These distances cannot be optimized by point labels end to end and are usually suboptimal, which result in inaccurate pseudo labels. Here we propose to assign unlabeled pixels to corresponding instances based on a learnable distance. Specifically, we represent each instance as an anchor query, then predict the pixel-to-instance distance based on the cross-attention between anchor queries and pixel features through a distance branch, the predicted distance is supervised by point labels end to end. In order that each query can accurately represent the corresponding instance, we iteratively improve anchor queries through query aggregating and query enhancing processes, then improved distance results and pseudo labels are predicted with these queries. We have experimentally demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach and achieved state-of-the-art results."

Plug-and-Play Learned Proximal Trajectory for 3D Sparse-View X-Ray Computed Tomography

Romain Vo*, Julie Escoda, Caroline Vienne, Etienne Decenciere

Expand abstract

"Plug-and-Play algorithms (PnP) have recently emerged as a powerful framework for solving inverse problems in imaging. They leverage the power of Gaussian denoising algorithms to solve complex optimization problems. This work focuses on the challenging task of 3D sparse-view X-ray computed tomography (CT). We propose to replace the Gaussian denoising network in Plug-and-Play with a restoration network, a network trained to remove arbitrary artifacts. We show that using a restoration prior tailored to the specific inverse problem improves the performances of Plug-and-Play algorithms. Besides, we show that plugging a basic restoration network into a PnP scheme is not sufficient to obtain good results. Thus, we propose a procedure to train the restoration network to be a robust approximation of a proximal operator along a pre-defined optimization trajectory. We demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our approach on two 3D Cone-Beam CT datasets and outperform state-of-the-art methods in terms of PSNR. Plug and Play: A Representation Enhanced Domain Adapter for Collaborative Perception

Tianyou Luo, Quan Yuan, Yuchen Xia, Guiyang Luo, Yujia Yang, Jinglin Li

Expand abstract

"Sharing intermediate neural features enables agents to effectively see through occlusions. Due to agent diversity, some pioneering works have studied domain adaption for heterogeneous neural features. Nevertheless, these works all partially replace agents’ private neural network with newly trained components, which breaks the model integrity and bidirectional compatibility of agents. In this paper, we consider an open challenge: how to learn non-destructive domain adapters for heterogeneous legacy models to achieve collaborative perception, while compatible with continually emerging new agent models? To overcome this challenge, we propose the first plug-and-play domain adapter (PnPDA) for heterogeneous collaborative perception. PnPDA builds a semantic calibrator based on contrastive learning to supervise domain gap bridging without destructing the original models. Semantic converter is learned to transform the semantic space of features, while semantic enhancer is utilized to enhance the representation of features. By specifying standard semantics, new models with PnPDA can easily join existing collaborations. Extensive experiments on OPV2V dataset show that PnPDA non-destructively bridges the domain gap and outperforms SOTA by 9.13%. The code is available at: https://github.com/luotianyou349/PnPDA."

Platypus: A Generalized Specialist Model for Reading Text in Various Forms

Peng Wang, Zhaohai Li, Jun Tang, Humen Zhong, Fei Huang, Zhibo Yang, Cong Yao

Expand abstract

"Reading text from images (either natural scenes or documents) has been a long-standing research topic for decades, due to the high technical challenge and wide application range. Previously, individual specialist models are developed to tackle the sub-tasks of text reading (e.g., scene text recognition, handwritten text recognition and mathematical expression recognition). However, such specialist models usually cannot effectively generalize across different sub-tasks. Recently, generalist models (such as GPT-4V), trained on tremendous data in a unified way, have shown enormous potential in reading text in various scenarios, but with the drawbacks of limited accuracy and low efficiency. In this work, we propose Platypus, a generalized specialist model for text reading. Specifically, Platypus combines the best of both worlds: being able recognize text of various forms with a single unified architecture, while achieving excellent accuracy and high efficiency. To better exploit the advantage of Platypus, we also construct a text reading dataset (called Worms), the images of which are curated from previous datasets and partially re-labeled. Experiments on standard benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed Platypus model. Model and data will be made publicly available at magentaAdvancedLiterateMachinery."

Placing Objects in Context via Inpainting for Out-of-distribution Segmentation

Expand abstract

"When deploying a semantic segmentation model into the real world, it will inevitably encounter semantic classes that were not seen during training. To ensure a safe deployment of such systems, it is crucial to accurately evaluate and improve their anomaly segmentation capabilities. However, acquiring and labelling semantic segmentation data is expensive and unanticipated conditions are long-tail and potentially hazardous. Indeed, existing anomaly segmentation datasets capture a limited number of anomalies, lack realism or have strong domain shifts. In this paper, we propose the Placing Objects in Context (POC) pipeline to realistically add any object into any image via diffusion models. POC can be used to easily extend any dataset with an arbitrary number of objects. In our experiments, we present different anomaly segmentation datasets based on POC-generated data and show that POC can improve the performance of recent state-of-the-art anomaly fine-tuning methods across several standardized benchmarks. POC is also effective for learning new classes. For example, we utilize it to augment Cityscapes samples by incorporating a subset of Pascal classes and demonstrate that models trained on such data achieve comparable performance to the Pascal-trained baseline. This corroborates the low synth2real gap of models trained on POC-generated images. Code: https://github.com/ naver/poc"

Pixel-GS Density Control with Pixel-aware Gradient for 3D Gaussian Splatting

Zheng Zhang, Wenbo Hu, Yixing Lao, Tong He, Hengshuang Zhao

Expand abstract

"3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has demonstrated impressive novel view synthesis results and advancing real-time rendering performance. However, the effectiveness of 3DGS heavily relies on the quality of the initial point cloud, as poor initialization can result in blurring and needle-like artifacts. This issue is mainly due to the point cloud growth condition, which only considers the average gradient magnitude of points from observable views, thereby failing to grow for large Gaussians that are observable from many viewpoints while many of them are only covered in the boundaries. To address this, we introduce Pixel-GS to take the area covered by the Gaussian in each view into account during the computation of the growth condition. The covered area is employed to adaptively weigh the gradients from different views, thereby facilitating the growth of large Gaussians. Consequently, Gaussians within the regions with insufficient initializing points can grow more effectively, leading to a more accurate and detailed reconstruction. Besides, we propose a simple yet effective strategy to suppress floaters near the camera by scaling the gradient field according to the distance to the camera. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments validate that our method achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality while maintaining real-time rendering, on challenging datasets such as Mip-NeRF 360 and Tanks & Temples. Pixel-Aware Stable Diffusion for Realistic Image Super-Resolution and Personalized Stylization

Tao Yang, Rongyuan Wu, Peiran Ren, Xuansong Xie, Lei Zhang

Expand abstract

"Diffusion models have demonstrated impressive performance in various image generation, editing, enhancement and translation tasks. In particular, the pre-trained text-to-image stable diffusion models provide a potential solution to the challenging realistic image super-resolution (Real-ISR) and image stylization problems with their strong generative priors. However, the existing methods along this line often fail to keep faithful pixel-wise image structures. If extra skip connections between the encoder and the decoder of a VAE are used to reproduce details, additional training in image space will be required, limiting the application to tasks in latent space such as image stylization. In this work, we propose a pixel-aware stable diffusion (PASD) network to achieve robust Real-ISR and personalized image stylization. Specifically, a pixel-aware cross attention module is introduced to enable diffusion models perceiving image local structures in pixel-wise level, while a degradation removal module is used to extract degradation insensitive features to guide the diffusion process together with image high level information. An adjustable noise schedule is introduced to further improve the image restoration results. By simply replacing the base diffusion model with a stylized one, PASD can generate diverse stylized images without collecting pairwise training data, and by shifting the base model with an aesthetic one, PASD can bring old photos back to life. Extensive experiments in a variety of image enhancement and stylization tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed PASD approach.
