AugDETR: Improving Multi-scale Learning for Detection Transformer

Jinpeng Dong, Yutong Lin, Chen Li, Sanping Zhou, Nanning Zheng

Expand abstract

"Current end-to-end detectors typically exploit transformers to detect objects and show promising performance. Among them, Deformable DETR is a representative paradigm that effectively exploits multi-scale features. However, small local receptive fields and limited query-encoder interactions weaken multi-scale learning. In this paper, we analyze local feature enhancement and multi-level encoder exploitation for improved multi-scale learning and construct a novel detection transformer detector named Augmented DETR (AugDETR) to realize them. Specifically, AugDETR consists of two components: Hybrid Attention Encoder and Encoder-Mixing Cross-Attention. Hybrid Attention Encoder enlarges the receptive field of the deformable encoder and introduces global context features to enhance feature representation. Encoder-Mixing Cross-Attention adaptively leverages multi-level encoders based on query features for more discriminative object features and faster convergence. By combining AugDETR with DETR-based detectors such as DINO, AlignDETR, DDQ, our models achieve performance improvements of 1.2, 1.1, and 1.0 AP in the COCO under the ResNet-50-4scale and 12 epochs setting, respectively."

Audio-visual Generalized Zero-shot Learning the Easy Way

Shentong Mo, Pedro Morgado

Expand abstract

"Audio-visual generalized zero-shot learning is a rapidly advancing domain that seeks to understand the intricate relations between audio and visual cues within videos. The overarching goal is to leverage insights from seen classes to identify instances from previously unseen ones. Prior approaches primarily utilized synchronized auto-encoders to reconstruct audio-visual attributes, which were informed by cross-attention transformers and projected text embeddings. However, these methods fell short of effectively capturing the intricate relationship between cross-modal features and class-label embeddings inherent in pre-trained language-aligned embeddings. To circumvent these bottlenecks, we introduce a simple yet effective framework for , named , that aligns audio-visual embeddings with transformed text representations. It utilizes a single supervised text audio-visual contrastive loss to learn an alignment between audio-visual and textual modalities, moving away from the conventional approach of reconstructing cross-modal features and text embeddings. Our key insight is that while class name embeddings are well aligned with language-based audio-visual features, they don’t provide sufficient class separation to be useful for zero-shot learning. To address this, our method leverages differential optimization to transform class embeddings into a more discriminative space while preserving the semantic structure of language representations. We conduct extensive experiments on VGGSound-GZSL, UCF-GZSL, and ActivityNet-GZSL benchmarks. Our results demonstrate that our achieves state-of-the-art performance in audio-visual generalized zero-shot learning."

Audio-driven Talking Face Generation with Stabilized Synchronization Loss

Dogucan Yaman*, Fevziye Irem Eyiokur, Leonard Bärmann, HAZIM KEMAL EKENEL, Alexander Waibel

Expand abstract

"Talking face generation aims to create realistic videos with accurate lip synchronization and high visual quality, using given audio and reference video while preserving identity and visual characteristics. In this paper, we start by identifying several issues with existing synchronization learning methods. These involve unstable training, lip synchronization, and visual quality issues caused by lip-sync loss, SyncNet, and lip leaking from the identity reference. To address these issues, we first tackle the lip leaking problem by introducing a silent-lip generator, which changes the lips of the identity reference to alleviate leakage. We then introduce stabilized synchronization loss and AVSyncNet to overcome problems caused by lip-sync loss and SyncNet. Experiments show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both visual quality and lip synchronization. Comprehensive ablation studies further validate our individual contributions and their cohesive effects."

AttnZero: Efficient Attention Discovery for Vision Transformers

Lujun Li, Zimian Wei, Peijie Dong, Wenhan Luo, Wei Xue, Qifeng Liu, Yike Guo

Expand abstract

"In this paper, we present AttnZero, the first framework for automatically discovering efficient attention modules tailored for Vision Transformers (ViTs). While traditional self-attention in ViTs suffers from quadratic computation complexity, linear attention offers a more efficient alternative with linear complexity approximation. However, existing hand-crafted linear attention suffers from performance degradation. To address these issues, our AttnZero constructs search spaces and employs evolutionary algorithms to discover potential linear attention formulations. Specifically, our search space consists of six kinds of computation graphs and advanced activation, normalize, and binary operators. To enhance generality, we derive results of candidate attention applied to multiple advanced ViTs as the multi-objective for the evolutionary search. To expedite the search process, we utilize program checking and rejection protocols to filter out unpromising candidates swiftly. Additionally, we develop Attn-Bench-101, which provides precomputed performance of 2,000 attentions in the search spaces, enabling us to summarize attention design insights. Experimental results demonstrate that the discovered AttnZero module generalizes well to different tasks and consistently achieves improved performance across various ViTs. For instance, the tiny model of DeiT—PVT—Swin—CSwin trained with AttnZero on ImageNet reaches 74.9%—78.1%—82.1%—82.9% top-1 accuracy. Codes at: https://github.com/lliai/AttnZero."

Attention-Challenging Multiple Instance Learning for Whole Slide Image Classification

Yunlong Zhang, Honglin Li, Yuxuan Sun, Chenglu Zhu, Sunyi Zheng, Lin Yang

Expand abstract

"In the application of Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) methods for Whole Slide Image (WSI) classification, attention mechanisms often focus on a subset of discriminative instances, which are closely linked to overfitting. To mitigate overfitting, we present Attention-Challenging MIL (ACMIL). ACMIL combines two techniques based on separate analyses for attention value concentration. Firstly, UMAP of instance features reveals various patterns among discriminative instances, with existing attention mechanisms capturing only some of them. To remedy this, we introduce Multiple Branch Attention (MBA) to capture more discriminative instances using multiple attention branches. Secondly, the examination of the cumulative value of Top-K attention scores indicates that a tiny number of instances dominate the majority of attention. In response, we present Stochastic Top-K Instance Masking (STKIM), which masks out a portion of instances with Top-K attention values and allocates their attention values to the remaining instances. The extensive experimental results on three WSI datasets with two pre-trained backbones reveal that our ACMIL outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, through heatmap visualization and UMAP visualization, this paper extensively illustrates ACMIL’s effectiveness in suppressing attention value concentration and overcoming the overfitting challenge. Attention Prompting on Image for Large Vision-Language Models

Runpeng Yu, Weihao Yu, Xinchao Wang

Expand abstract

"Compared with Large Language Models (LLMs), Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) can also accept images as input, thus showcasing more interesting emergent capabilities and demonstrating impressive performance on various vision-language tasks. Motivated by text prompting in LLMs, visual prompting has been explored to enhance LVLMs’ capabilities of perceiving visual information. However, previous visual prompting techniques solely process visual inputs without considering text queries, limiting the models’ ability to follow text instructions to complete tasks. To fill this gap, in this work, we propose a new prompting technique named Attention Prompting on Image (), which just simply overlays a text-query-guided attention heatmap on the original input image and effectively enhances LVLM on various tasks. Specifically, we generate an attention heatmap for the input image dependent on the text query with an auxiliary model like CLIP. Then the heatmap simply multiplies the pixel values of the original image to obtain the actual input image for the LVLM. Extensive experiments on various vison-language benchmarks verify the effectiveness of our technique. For example, improves LLaVA-1.5 by 3.8% and 2.9% on MM-Vet and LLaVA-Wild benchmarks, respectively."

While recent CNNs and proposal-free transformers led to significant advances, we introduce a new transformer with a lighter encoder and more complex decoder with query tokens for predicting segmentation masks, called . The domain gap between the source and target domains is reduced with two mechanisms. First, we decompose cross-attention in the decoder into domain-independent and domain-specific parts to enforce the query tokens interact with the domain-independent aspects of the image tokens, shared by the source and target domains, rather than domain-specific counterparts which induce the domain gap. Second, we use the gradient reverse block to control back-propagation of the gradient, and hence introduce adversarial learning in the decoder of . Our results on two benchmark domain shifts – GTA to Cityscapes and SYNTHIA to Cityscapes – show that outperforms SOTA proposal-free methods with significantly lower complexity. Attention Beats Linear for Fast Implicit Neural Representation Generation

Shuyi Zhang, Ke Liu, Jingjun Gu, Xiaoxu Cai, Zhihua Wang, Jiajun Bu, Haishuai Wang

Expand abstract

"Implicit Neural Representation (INR) has gained increasing popularity as a data representation method, serving as a prerequisite for innovative generation models. Unlike gradient-based methods, which exhibit lower efficiency in inference, the adoption of hyper-network for generating parameters in Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLP), responsible for executing INR functions, has surfaced as a promising and efficient alternative. However, as a global continuous function, MLP is challenging in modeling highly discontinuous signals, resulting in slow convergence during the training phase and inaccurate reconstruction performance. Moreover, MLP requires massive representation parameters, which implies inefficiencies in data representation. In this paper, we propose a novel Attention-based Localized INR (ANR) composed of a localized attention layer (LAL) and a global MLP that integrates coordinate features with data features and converts them to meaningful outputs. Subsequently, we design an instance representation framework that delivers a transformer-like hyper-network to represent data instances as a compact representation vector. With instance-specific representation vector and instance-agnostic ANR parameters, the target signals are well reconstructed as a continuous function. We further address aliasing artifacts with variational coordinates when obtaining the super-resolution inference results. Extensive experimentation across four datasets showcases the notable efficacy of our ANR method, e.g. enhancing the PSNR value from 37.95dB to 47.25dB on the CelebA dataset. Code is released at https://github.com/Roninton/ANR."

Asynchronous Large Language Model Enhanced Planner for Autonomous Driving

Yuan Chen, Zi-han Ding, Ziqin Wang, Yan Wang, Lijun Zhang, Si Liu

Expand abstract

"Despite real-time planners exhibiting remarkable performance in autonomous driving, the growing exploration of Large Language Models (LLMs) has opened avenues for enhancing the interpretability and controllability of motion planning. Nevertheless, LLM-based planners continue to encounter significant challenges, including elevated resource consumption and extended inference times, which pose substantial obstacles to practical deployment. In light of these challenges, we introduce AsyncDriver, a new asynchronous LLM-enhanced closed-loop framework designed to leverage scene-associated instruction features produced by LLM to guide real-time planners in making precise and controllable trajectory predictions. On one hand, our method highlights the prowess of LLMs in comprehending and reasoning with vectorized scene data and a series of routing instructions, demonstrating its effective assistance to real-time planners. On the other hand, the proposed framework decouples the inference processes of the LLM and real-time planners. By capitalizing on the asynchronous nature of their inference frequencies, our approach have successfully reduced the computational cost introduced by LLM, while maintaining comparable performance. Experiments show that our approach achieves superior closed-loop evaluation performance on nuPlan’s challenging scenarios. The code and dataset are available at https: //github.com/memberRE/AsyncDriver."

"Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) offer a biologically inspired approach to computer vision that can lead to more efficient processing of visual data with reduced energy consumption. However, maintaining homeostasis within SNNs is challenging, as it requires continuous adjustment of neural responses to preserve equilibrium and optimal processing efficiency amidst diverse and often unpredictable input signals. In response to these challenges, we propose the Asynchronous Bioplausible Neuron (ABN), a dynamic spike firing mechanism that offers a simple yet potent auto-adjustment to variations in input signals. Its parameters, Membrane Gradient (MG), Threshold Retrospective Gradient (TRG), and Spike Efficiency (SE), make it stand out for its easy implementation, significant effectiveness, and proven reduction in power consumption, a key innovation demonstrated in our experiments. Comprehensive evaluation across various datasets demonstrates ABN’s enhanced performance in image classification and segmentation, maintenance of neural equilibrium, and energy efficiency."

Asymmetric Mask Scheme for Self-Supervised Real Image Denoising

Xiangyu Liao, Tianheng Zheng, Jiayu Zhong, Pingping Zhang, Chao Ren

Expand abstract

"In recent years, self-supervised denoising methods have gained significant success and become critically important in the field of image restoration. Among them, the blind spot network based methods are the most typical type and have attracted the attentions of a large number of researchers. Although the introduction of blind spot operations can prevent identity mapping from noise to noise, it imposes stringent requirements on the receptive fields in the network design, thereby limiting overall performance. To address this challenge, we propose a single mask scheme for self-supervised denoising training, which eliminates the need for blind spot operation and thereby removes constraints on the network structure design. Furthermore, to achieve denoising across entire image during inference, we propose a multi-mask scheme. Our method, featuring the asymmetric mask scheme in training and inference, achieves state-of-the-art performance on existing real noisy image datasets. Assessing Sample Quality via the Latent Space of Generative Models

Jingyi Xu, Hieu Le, Dimitris Samaras

Expand abstract

"Advances in generative models increase the need for sample quality assessment. To do so, previous methods rely on a pre-trained feature extractor to embed the generated samples and real samples into a common space for comparison. However, different feature extractors might lead to inconsistent assessment outcomes. Moreover, these methods are not applicable for domains where a robust, universal feature extractor does not yet exist, such as medical images or 3D assets. In this paper, we propose to directly examine the latent space of the trained generative model to infer generated sample quality. This is feasible because the quality a generated sample directly relates to the amount of training data resembling it, and we can infer this information by examining the density of the latent space. Accordingly, we use a latent density score function to quantify sample quality. We show that the proposed score correlates highly with the sample quality for various generative models including VAEs, GANs and Latent Diffusion Models. Compared with previous quality assessment methods, our method has the following advantages: 1) pre-generation quality estimation with reduced computational cost, 2) generalizability to various domains and modalities, and 3) applicability to latent-based image editing and generation methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed methods can benefit downstream tasks such as few-shot image classification and latent face image editing. ArtVLM: Attribute Recognition Through Vision-Based Prefix Language Modeling

William Yicheng Zhu*, Keren Ye, Junjie Ke, Jiahui Yu, Leonidas Guibas, Peyman Milanfar, Feng Yang

Expand abstract

"Recognizing and disentangling visual attributes from objects is a foundation to many computer vision applications. While large vision-language representations like CLIP had largely resolved the task of zero-shot object recognition, zero-shot visual attribute recognition remains a challenge because CLIP’s contrastively-learned vision-language representation cannot effectively capture object-attribute dependencies. In this paper, we target this weakness and propose a sentence generation-based retrieval formulation for attribute recognition that is novel in 1) explicitly modeling a to-be-measured and retrieved object-attribute relation as a conditional probability graph, which converts the recognition problem into a dependency-sensitive language-modeling problem, and 2) applying a large pretrained Vision-Language Model (VLM) on this reformulation and naturally distilling its knowledge of image-object-attribute relations to use towards attribute recognition. Specifically, for each attribute to be recognized on an image, we measure the visual-conditioned probability of generating a short sentence encoding the attribute’s relation to objects on the image. Unlike contrastive retrieval, which measures likelihood by globally aligning elements of the sentence to the image, generative retrieval is sensitive to the order and dependency of objects and attributes in the sentence. We demonstrate through experiments that generative retrieval consistently outperforms contrastive retrieval on two visual reasoning datasets, Visual Attribute in the Wild (VAW), and our newly-proposed Visual Genome Attribute Ranking (VGARank)."

Arbitrary-Scale Video Super-Resolution with Structural and Textural Priors

Expand abstract

"Arbitrary-scale video super-resolution (AVSR) aims to enhance the resolution of video frames, potentially at various scaling factors, which presents several challenges regarding spatial detail reproduction, temporal consistency, and computational complexity. In this paper, we first describe a strong baseline for AVSR by putting together three variants of elementary building blocks: 1) a flow-guided recurrent unit that aggregates spatiotemporal information from previous frames, 2) a flow-refined cross-attention unit that selects spatiotemporal information from future frames, and 3) a hyper-upsampling unit that generates scale-aware and content-independent upsampling kernels. We then introduce ST-AVSR by equipping our baseline with a multi-scale structural and textural prior computed from the pre-trained VGG network. This prior has proven effective in discriminating structure and texture across different locations and scales, which is beneficial for AVSR. Comprehensive experiments show that ST-AVSR significantly improves super-resolution quality, generalization ability, and inference speed over the state-of-the-art. Approaching Outside: Scaling Unsupervised 3D Object Detection from 2D Scene

Ruiyang Zhang, Hu Zhang, Hang Yu, Zhedong Zheng

Expand abstract

"The unsupervised 3D object detection is to accurately detect objects in unstructured environments with no explicit supervisory signals. This task, given sparse LiDAR point clouds, often results in compromised performance for detecting distant or small objects due to the inherent sparsity and limited spatial resolution. In this paper, we are among the early attempts to integrate LiDAR data with 2D images for unsupervised 3D detection and introduce a new method, dubbed LiDAR-2D Self-paced Learning (LiSe). We argue that RGB images serve as a valuable complement to LiDAR data, offering precise 2D localization cues, particularly when scarce LiDAR points are available for certain objects. Considering the unique characteristics of both modalities, our framework devises a self-paced learning pipeline that incorporates adaptive sampling and weak model aggregation strategies. The adaptive sampling strategy dynamically tunes the distribution of pseudo labels during training, countering the tendency of models to overfit easily detected samples, such as nearby and large-sized objects. By doing so, it ensures a balanced learning trajectory across varying object scales and distances. The weak model aggregation component consolidates the strengths of models trained under different pseudo label distributions, culminating in a robust and powerful final model. Experimental evaluations validate the efficacy of our proposed LiSe method, manifesting significant improvements of +7.1% APBEV and +3.4% AP3D on nuScenes, and +8.3% APBEV and +7.4% AP3D on Lyft compared to existing techniques."

Appearance-based Refinement for Object-Centric Motion Segmentation

Junyu Xie, Weidi Xie, Andrew Zisserman

Expand abstract

"The goal of this paper is to discover, segment, and track independently moving objects in complex visual scenes. Previous approaches have explored the use of optical flow for motion segmentation, leading to imperfect predictions due to partial motion, background distraction, and object articulations and interactions. To address this issue, we introduce an appearance-based refinement method that leverages temporal consistency in video streams to correct inaccurate flow-based proposals. Our approach involves a sequence-level selection mechanism that identifies accurate flow-predicted masks as exemplars, and an object-centric architecture that refines problematic masks based on exemplar information. The model is pre-trained on synthetic data and then adapted to real-world videos in a self-supervised manner, eliminating the need for human annotations. Its performance is evaluated on multiple video segmentation benchmarks, including DAVIS, YouTubeVOS, SegTrackv2, and FBMS-59. We achieve competitive performance on single-object segmentation, while significantly outperforming existing models on the more challenging problem of multi-object segmentation. Finally, we investigate the benefits of using our model as a prompt for the per-frame Segment Anything Model."

"The field of text-to-image (T2I) generation has made significant progress in recent years, largely driven by advancements in diffusion models. Linguistic control enables effective content creation, but struggles with fine-grained control over image generation. This challenge has been explored, to a great extent, by incorporating additional user-supplied spatial conditions, such as depth maps and edge maps, into pre-trained T2I models through extra encoding. However, multi-control image synthesis still faces several challenges. Any2Point: Empowering Any-modality Transformers for Efficient 3D Understanding

Expand abstract

"Large foundation models have recently emerged as a prominent focus of interest, attaining superior performance in widespread scenarios. Due to the scarcity of 3D data, many efforts have been made to adapt pre-trained transformers from vision to 3D domains. However, such 2D-to-3D approaches are still limited, due to the potential loss of spatial geometries and high computation cost. More importantly, their frameworks are mainly designed for 2D models, lacking a general any-to-3D paradigm. In this paper, we introduce Any2Point, a parameter-efficient method to empower any-modality large models (vision, language, audio) for 3D understanding. Given a frozen transformer from any source modality, we propose a 3D-to-any (1D or 2D) virtual projection strategy that correlates the input 3D points to the original 1D or 2D positions within the source modality. This mechanism enables us to assign each 3D token with a positional encoding paired with the pre-trained model, which avoids 3D geometry loss caused by the true projection and better motivates the transformer for 3D learning with 1D/2D positional priors. Then, within each transformer block, we insert an any-to-3D guided adapter module for parameter-efficient fine-tuning. The adapter incorporates prior spatial knowledge from the source modality to guide the local feature aggregation of 3D tokens, compelling the semantic adaption of any-modality transformers. We conduct extensive experiments to showcase the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. The code is released at https://github.com/Ivan-Tang-3D/Any2Point."
